Ours are boring, functional, obvious names. Just my preference. I'd really, really like to write a disaster recovery plan with some of the naming schemes you lot have on the go, though.

Chief Wiggum - Firewall

Rev. Lovejoy - Mail Server

Dr. Hibbert - AntiVirus

Dr. Riviera - Print Server (because it was tempermental).

We use a short descirptive name such as Exc1 or FS1 or DC1 - if it's virtual then it gets a v- in front of it

Same here - FS01 / DC01 / VExc01 (We've since stopped putting V as now all bar one server is physical).

Old place was Simpsons characters with Springfield as the domain as @korifugi said. Names like "Sideshowbob" and "Sideshowmel" for our VMWare hosts, and "Krusty" was the VMWare vCentre server monitoring them while "Krabappel" did the online examinations... we had a little fun and at the same time kept (some of) the names relevant (ish).

 

My new place has servers named after Tolkien characters and locations. It's bad enough not being completely sure what they do at the moment being the new guy, but spelling them is a whole different challenge altogether having never read any Tolkien. Osgiliath? Rhovan-what-now...? Minas...where?

 

I've always worked on the basis that naming is relatively arbitrary - as long as you have appropriate documentation and try to avoid abusing netbios character limits, it shouldn't matter how your servers are named - but I think that being deliberately obscure can sometimes be a good thing depending on the environment. Most users could probably take a reaonable guess what ABC-FileSrv-001 and ABC-MailSrv-001 do, but how about "Bart", "Lister" or "Mordor"?

All Harry Potter here. We us the school initials plus either a P for physical or a V for Virtual ... plus a short descriptor ... plus a unique number

When I arrived at this job I found an old machine running an antiquated version of PFSense that was called China, I assume as in 'great firewall of'.

 

The network also had clients that were named after countries. The white Fujitsu boxes were named sweden, norway, finland, france, belgium, england and germany. The black dell boxes were called uganda, rwanda, nigeria, lesotho and congo. It's not politically correct, but it did serve a purpose!

 

I've scrapped all of them anyway as they were all p4 and running windows fundamentals and a terminal session!

I've added a new server to the network this week. As it's not visible to clients it doesn't need to conform to a naming convention. It's been called "Oculus".

My servers are all characters from lord of the rings and the hobbit, for example Gandalf is the primary dc because he’s practically the leader of the hobbits and whatnot.
