Not sure why you are speeding up when they're overtaking though, seems a bit risky to me.

It is but only enough which forces them to go more forward, what happens is they seem to check their mirror at the exact spot where they are along side me. They wait literally 2 seconds then turn in, where I speed up it's so when they look at their mirror they will need a lot more than 2 seconds to carry on.

Just forces them to move more up the road which means they are not cutting me up, instead there is 2 car lengths in front of me when they do turn in. As much as they think they own the road they still don't want to scratch their shiny shiny car.

I am even in the process of looking at a dash cam which means I will have to make sure my driving is safe a lot more than normal, I at least can report dangerous driving to the police.

You're kidding, right? What a thing to say and admit to.

So far it seems to be working in making sure they carry on further up the road. Also, by speeding up don't assume I mean an extra 50 miles an hour. It simply is an extra 5-10 just enough for them to think they need to go further.

Also what I admitted to is perfectly legal, I am well within my right to increase my speed as long as I am not overtaking in the 1st lane - or breaking the speed limit. If you want me to be more specific in detail, by along side me I mean by they are not actually dead next to me. If you don't read between the lines of what I am trying to say, I cant be bothered to explain it further :)

You may be within the law to speed up like that whilst being overtaken; however, the practical effect is that you're increasing the risk of a collision for nothing more than a small sense of satisfaction and a salve for your ego. Idiots At The Wheel are going to continue to be idiots regardless of any action you take. They're not going to have a sudden revelation as a result of your actions.

If you've been driving at a constant speed and suddenly increase it at an unexpected moment like that, you're driving unpredictably, and that's possibly the most dangerous thing to do. If someone's tailgating me, I'll usually pull over as left as I can and do all I can to encourage them to overtake, because I'd rather just have them out of the way.

Not to mention:

Highway Code Rule 168.

Being overtaken. If a driver is trying to overtake you, maintain a steady course and speed, slowing down if necessary to let the vehicle pass. Never obstruct drivers who wish to pass. Speeding up or driving unpredictably while someone is overtaking you is dangerous. Drop back to maintain a two-second gap if someone overtakes and pulls into the gap in front of you.

I think I know what you're trying to achieve @mthomas08, but I don't think the type of person who is likely to cut you up will take any notice or take anything from it. Slowing down a little to increase your gap, and letting the other driver get on with it seems the safest option to me even though it may be inconveniencing you slightly. Avoids any possible confrontation. Just my opinion of course. :)

PS I also drive a VW Golf. Sorry @mthomas08, please don't hate me. :getmecoat:

My Personal favorite, most commonly used by 'luxury' car drivers, is stick in the left lane, take the third exit on the roundabout, join the motorway and cut straight into the outside lane there and tailgate who evers in front.

I think I'm starting to dislike driving.

Left lane - turn left and straight on.

Right lane - turn right.

The way my instructor said was anything before 12 o'clock on the roundabout is left lane. Anything after is right lane.

Unless stated otherwise by road markings or sign.

Ive a similar rounabout near me, left hand lane is straight on or 1st exit left. If im straight on naturally im in left hand lane, people in the right hand lane ALWAYS try to go straight on nearly hittin gme as they try to manouver left. And people pull out of the left join without even looking right onto oncoming traffic... ill show you.

Follow the roundabout onto Hessle round, the no entry marked on the road sign is where people blindly pull out, and people in tat right hand lane taking the second exit.

Don't forget; a car already on the roundabout, that you may have joined legitimately alongside, may well want to leave on the first exit YOU come to. One of those cases where a little give and take make the world a better place.

Im talking about me entering a roundabout and someone next to me in the right hand lane also entering the round about in the right hand lane going straight on (round about is in the map above) and then beeping like hell because ive indicated left to leave at the junction I want and they turn into the exit at the same time, happens all the time on the roundabout in question.

This is a bit of a rant really about roundabouts with two lanes and whether people are misusing them or I'm missing something.

It's a bit after 16:30, rush hour traffic and I'm sitting in the left lane, waiting to go straight on at a roundabout, the traffic in my lane is backed up a bit whereas in the right, it's flowing a tad more. I'm at the front, cue the Audi driver who wants to get home more than everyone else waiting in the queue of traffic I've been sat in for the last 5 -10 mins.

Hello road rage.

As I'm proceeding to go straight on, the Audi attempts to turn left, from the right lane, nearly hitting me, then has the cheek to start giving me the odds, at this point, I'm screaming at him, typical road rage angry words...

Basically this isn't the first time it's happened. Am I missing something when I say the left lane is for turning left and going straight and right lane for turning right and maybe straight on? (although it's good not to)

Has anyone else any experience of seeing this and is it even allowed or is it typical poor and impatient driving again?

Nope. People are morons. Day after a car transporter lorry pushed me into the crash barriers on the motorway, I'm sitting at a roundabout where the lane directions are clearly defined. I'm in the outside lane which is a Straight on or Right. Moron in a silver car in inside lane that is marked straight on only. Lights change, Moron literally swerves in front of me to turn right. Cue total emotional meltdown, lots of vans honking and another near-write off LITERALLY the day after I was taken out on the Mway.

IMO Lanes at roundabouts ought to have physical fences separating them so you pick your lane and are forced to commit.

Ermm, no thank you. They are trying to introduce "Armadillos" on some roads to "protect" cyclists; and kill bikers.

There are roundabouts that just don't work if you follow the signs. The A34/M3 junction is a classic around here. Leaving Winchester, heading south but not on the M3, you are FORCED to cut across two lanes to get to your exit. Which would be do-able in free flowing traffic. However, some clown thought lights would be a good idea.

There's a roundabout near me where some lights have been put in and questions from everyone seem to be; why?

I use that roundabout almost on the daily from all entrances/exits depending where I'm working and it was always steady flowing, the lights seemed to have made it a lot slower and now traffic backs up onto the previous roundabout causing a back log, my journey time since these 'improvements' have definitely decreased. Idea probably came from the moron who thought open plan classrooms were a good idea...

Conversely, Boston used to be an absolute nightmare with traffic lights on the roundabouts at either end of John Adams way; since they took them out a few years back its improved vastly.

It takes a special kind of thinking to install a device meant to stop traffic (lights) on a road design meant to allow traffic to flow (roundabouts).

It just raises questions as you're driving up a pot hole ridden road to some shiny new useless traffic lights

One thing that is forgotten is local variants. I've never been able to find out if these are local TROs or just peer pressure. Example near me is a standard 4 way roundabout but one entrance just goes to the driveway of a quarry. So from one direction everyone goes into the right hand lane to go straight on, leaving the left lane free for the left turners. There aren't any arrows, which would help. When I first moved to the area I stuck to the letter of the law and ended up always coming into conflict with other drivers but after changing it is only the occasional person that causes issue.

I usually have fun on a particular roundabout 2-3 times a week, this one :-

At the left of the picture the blue / white cars, I always stick to the left hand lane to go straight over the roundabout, but I always have fun with people in the right hand lane racing to go straight over, and they have the cheek to beep and flash me...

There's one roundabout at a motorway junction I use regularly. Leaving the motorway to access local roads there are two lanes clearly marked on the slip road, twice, adequate distances apart - so there's plenty of opportunity to see them. The lanes are all marked with white lines.

Lane 1 is for 1st, 2nd and 3rd exits (left for local road; motorway S/B; right - for services and another local road)

Lane 2 is for 4th exit (for local road) (and 5th exit for motorway N/B)

A lot of drivers just ignore the lane markings on approach, and use lane 2 with the intention of using the 3rd exit. I've had one or two drivers in the past cut me up at the last moment when they realise they are in a lane for the 4th exit when they actually need the 3rd.

if anyone is up north and thinks that the right hand lane trick will work on the approach to the tyne tunnel think again. They have a very nice police man who,s job is to pull over people who do this and send them back down the other side of the a19 . its quite funny as the person gets to see just how long the que is twice ;)

wonder if they allow the public to sit with said copper and point and laugh at people lol

no but if you join the que about 8.30 ish in the morning you get to see the muppets get pulled, one other thing they note the reg number and warn the drivers if you get pulled again in the next 3 months they will do you ( I think for without due care and attention) since its signposted a long way back

Last Friday, after having read this thread during the day, I was crossing a roundabout to go straight on having taken the right-hand lane (allowed by the arrows on the road). With the always-take-the –left-lane rule in my head and with a driver on my right who also appeared to be going straight on I proceeded cautiously to the exit (two lanes). Which was fortunate really because the numpty on my left decided to turn right on the roundabout! I managed to avoid hitting the idiot but I can honestly say that if I had not read this thread I would have proceeded in my usual boy-racer style and there would have been an accident.
