mikkydoos Posted April 28, 2015 Posted April 28, 2015 Hey all, Got Virgin media leased fibre line... need to up the bandwidth from 10mbs to 30-50mbs - maxing it out big time! They want an extra £400 a year + £500 one-off payment for 30mbs, if we sign a new 3 year contract. Without signing a new 3 year contract they want an extra £1200 an year + £500 one-off payment. They can go and $$$$ $$$ ! I think we're paying too much anyway for 10mbs. Any recommendations for ISP's for the West Midlands? Suppliers - PM me some prices (no spiel pls, just figures) if you wish - new 100mb fibre carrier was installed last year by Virgin. I'm looking for up to 50mbs each way, fully managed service with guaranteed uptime Cheers all

I'm sure suppliers on here could give you more competitive rates.
synaesthesia Posted April 28, 2015 Posted April 28, 2015 Give @SchoolsBroadband a shout. Prices may vary massively though due to what's available in your area, and having a Virgin connection won't guarantee another carrier could take it over.

Sagima Posted April 28, 2015 Posted April 28, 2015 (edited) I was thinking a 100/100 line was pretty much standard for a school these days - thankfully it's not £19k/year but bt do charge us 50% more than virgin do for the same speed line. Whenever we want anything done on our lines we pretty much have to resign the contract - I don't think we've ever gotten to within 18 months of the end date of any of the (four!) 5 year ones we've had with BT in the 9 years I've been here Edited April 28, 2015 by Sagima
ITGURU Posted April 28, 2015 Posted April 28, 2015 In Lincolnshire Most Schools are capped at 40mb on a 100mb circuit, but we're on 100 symmetrical as we merged as 2 separate schools into 1 so was opened up to us. I was investigating costs for going independent due to the current reliability issues with our current LEA provider.

I asked when we are getting fibre and BT said they are aiming to supply most primary schools within the year. Pinch of salt an all that. Some of your lines sound blazing quick in comparison!

ellsandell Posted April 28, 2015 Posted April 28, 2015 We are in the middle of changing and managed to get 100/100 with a FTTC backup line for £6600 pa in rural Cumbria... Admittedly our LEA BB was nearer £13k.

AndiMarv Posted April 28, 2015 Posted April 28, 2015 Out here in rural Oxfordshire a 100/1000 leased line costs us £14k - I would happily pay prices close to the Virgin or BT ones above but our location seems to demand high prices. Soon the local telephone exchanges are being fiber enabled, I am hoping we will see some synchronous upload/download products offered on there.

Instead of thinking annually, you need to think long-term, so 3 and 5 year deals are going to be more appealing to your school and your ISP. Your school cannot function without an internet connection of some kind, so the prices quoted don't seem unreasonable to me.
Snuffkins Posted April 28, 2015 Posted April 28, 2015 We use Virgin here as well, 200/1000 with a backup 100/100 costs us a little under 15k. Not really had any issues at the moment, but then we've not needed to change the service so far. How long have you got left on the current contract? What sort of early termination charges would you incur, or are you close enough to the end to just let it run?

You want to alter the contract too though, that's the thing here - you want more services and they want to make sure they get money from you for doing so. They can either charge you a pile in one go (the larger amount for the remainder of the contract) or less over the length of a new contract. They're a business - they are there to earn money!

It is naughty of them, i last week requested to go from 50Megabit to 100Megabit with Zen and there was no charge for doing so, just the increased annual cost of the leased line. Glad we did not go Virgin Media few years back.

Obviously we're going to pay for the extra bandwidth over the year but to charge double whilst we're still in contract isn't on. To be fair to them, I've got our rep trying to get what I want but I'm not expecting him to because thats how their pricing structure works. I don't want to cancel the contract, I just have more bandwidth for the next 2 years, not have to extend the contract, retain options of suppliers in 2 years, and.... not get stung for it. Doesn't mention extra fee's for up'ing the bandwidth in the contract either. Edited April 28, 2015 by mikkydoos
