snakepottery Posted January 10, 2006 Posted January 10, 2006 Hello, I'm trying to install Prodesktop V8 across the network using policies but the msi that is provided still requires some user intervention during install. I've tried using Advanced Installer (MSI creation app) but can't get my head around it! It sort of works but still requires user inputs. What do you people out there do? Thanks all! Andy
russdev Posted January 10, 2006 Posted January 10, 2006 run awaya run away god dam software to install have got msi but wont be abel to sort it till thursday now but be warned it may work or may not russ
DMcCoy Posted January 10, 2006 Posted January 10, 2006 I have been unable to deploy it successfully with ghost or wininstall. I'm sure it keels over without admin privileges somewhere. Either that or the 3d accel doesn't work with the built in graphics card. Could always be a reg key placed in a stupid area of the registry.
ChrisH Posted January 10, 2006 Posted January 10, 2006 Hmm not sure what version we have but it deploys fine I will check tommorow.
john Posted January 10, 2006 Posted January 10, 2006 I never managed to get it to deploy it properly, so just installed it on my server, and put a shortcut to the program on the workstations, it worked fine for me
E1uSiV3 Posted January 10, 2006 Posted January 10, 2006 the MSI might have a custom dialog, causing the install to halt, i had a similar issue with one of the Serif packages, afaik theres nothing you can do about it either :grrr:
snakepottery Posted January 11, 2006 Author Posted January 11, 2006 Thanks all, Why oh why can't software people write code that works. Apparently this software has been recommended by county!!!! I'll try V2000 as well as running it from the server. Frankly I think it is a waste of time as the PCs in the tech block are crap! Anyway, enough gripeing and moaning, Cheers Andy
Ric_ Posted January 11, 2006 Posted January 11, 2006 We use version 2000i2 which installed like a dream using the MSI supplied with it. I've not had any complaints about it being the 'wrong' version so I can only assume that it is the right one
ChrisH Posted January 11, 2006 Posted January 11, 2006 Aye we have 2000 as well works fine as standard.
Frazer Posted January 11, 2006 Posted January 11, 2006 Prodesktop 8 SP1 here. (help about shows: Datecode 2003330, build 1061) Installed as part of the workstation image. We found it did crash pretty much every time with the built in graphics cards (intel chipset, fujitsu siemens scenic p), slight change to the mandatory profile (or reg hack on login if you like) fixed the problem. Tools->Options->Performance->_Tick_ 'Disable graphics hardware acceleration (slower)'
sahmeepee Posted January 12, 2006 Posted January 12, 2006 We found it did crash pretty much every time with the built in graphics cards (intel chipset, fujitsu siemens scenic p), slight change to the mandatory profile (or reg hack on login if you like) fixed the problem. Tools->Options->Performance->_Tick_ 'Disable graphics hardware acceleration (slower)' EXACTLY the same problem here (different onboard graphics to yours).. it'd hang at 100% CPU every time we ran it after installing the newer version until we made that setting change. Very annoying and took a fair old while to figure out.
Ric_ Posted January 13, 2006 Posted January 13, 2006 @Frazer & sahmeepee: How did you tick the setting if the program didn't run?
tarquel Posted January 15, 2006 Posted January 15, 2006 Hehe Was trying to get 2000i2 to work again last week oddly enough. For some reason [probably my fault somewhere] after installing it, I have to open it and close it otherwise, non-administrator users cant open it. Anyone got any good tips that work with ProDesktop? The tech staff want to use v8 but apparently, even if you get it to work, theres a part of it that doesnt work still. Of course, he told me about it ages ago so I got rid of it and tried putting 2000i2 back again lol Any thoughts? Nath
john Posted January 15, 2006 Posted January 15, 2006 V8 is fine so long as you remember to open it, and you extrude something then it works fine.
Frazer Posted January 17, 2006 Posted January 17, 2006 @Ric Program ran for me, just crashed when you tried to draw a box or anything else Could have reg hacked it before running it too
Ric_ Posted January 17, 2006 Posted January 17, 2006 @tarquel - IIRC there is a handy util on the disk that creates the transform for the MSI and inserts your serial number. Don't know about v8 - I'm sure it can't be that different.
steve Posted January 17, 2006 Posted January 17, 2006 There is a support forum for Pro/Desktop at http://www.cadinschools.org/forums/
tarquel Posted February 10, 2006 Posted February 10, 2006 Yep - theres also one here too: http://www.prodesktop.net/ but neither [that i have found yet] has a definitive installation guide for installing ProDESKTOP V8 - with pretty pictures and everything. Surely by now they must have released patches for these problems - installing it and loading it before it'll work on a non-admin. That isnt too bad when you have 50 PC's [pain in the a$$ still tho] but in places where you have 500+ PC's, its gonna take a serious chunk of time if you cant just deploy it using GP etc. Anyone care to make a master guide? Or know how to get any possible fabled patches to fix all these problems. They were suggesting that you have to adjust the slider of the hardware performance thingy on the graphics. Good god - surely its a program that needs that up to the max, not reduced to allow it to work lol Thats crazy stuff. .......*coughs*...... [/rant] Cheers Nath
tarquel Posted April 6, 2006 Posted April 6, 2006 bump ^^ done the extude thing after install [as administrator of course hehe] on v8 but it still refuses to work. Driving me crazy it is. The tech staff have been really patient but I wonder for how long hehe Any ideas still welcome Newer version coming out yet at all? Cheers Nath
Snuffkins Posted April 6, 2006 Posted April 6, 2006 Anyone care to make a master guide? Or know how to get any possible fabled patches to fix all these problems. Have you tried installing SP2 yet? Assuming you've actually been sent a copy...
krisd32 Posted April 6, 2006 Posted April 6, 2006 try setting the hardware acceleration on your display settings to none or 0, I had this problem with version 8 and i couldn't figure it out for ages.
OverWorked Posted April 6, 2006 Posted April 6, 2006 We had the same problem with Pro/Desktop 8. If you log on as a non-admin, then draw a circle and try to extrude it, an unhelpful error message appears. Apparently it's caused by the .exe not registering correctly when it is installed. It registers itself when the first user uses it. If they're not an admin then it won't work. The answer is to log on as administrator and run this script:- "c:\Program Files\PTC\ProDESKTOP 8.0\Program\ProD.exe" /regserver I can't remember where I got this information from, one of the forums mentioned above probably. I created a user account, made them a member of the domain admins group, and set that as the login script. I then had to go round each of the machines and log on with the new user account. This is after installing the SP2 version via group policy and the supplied msi. We had the same problem with the original version and we hoping that SP2 would fix it. No joy. The helpdesk just recommends disabling the graphics hardware acceleration, but it didn't work for me.
OverWorked Posted April 6, 2006 Posted April 6, 2006 Here's another gotcha for anyones who's stuggling with install:- You have to install the IIScript.msi first. I used this handy tool to edit the GPO to get them to install in the right order, because there's no way of doing it in the GPO editor. Assigned Software Sequence Manager
Mintsoft Posted April 6, 2006 Posted April 6, 2006 We have exactly the same problem with Pro Desktop 8 here. We only have the new version in 2 rooms so it was a case of install the package, log on as admin, turn off graphics accelleration, extrude something then logoff. If the extrude fails then run ProD.exe /regserver. Quite possibly one of the most annoying pieces of software ever.
