SCCM - who installed it for you?

We're looking at moving away from Altiris DS as our image/app deployment setup to SCCM.

Did any of you use consultants to do the initial setup and configuration of this? Looking for recommendations so we don't get ripped off/messed about.

I installed it myself using the guides at windows-noob.com (3 times now)

 

Took probably a day and a half each time - it's not that difficult in general but I have never managed to get adobe updates to work through the windows update part. I did it working from home so I wouldn't get disturbed.

Same as @Sagima. Installed it myself in 2 schools using the tutorials at windows-noob.com.

 

About the same amount of time taken too.

Did it myself (both 2007 and 2012), also with Windowsnoobs guide.

No, installed and set it up on 2007 in 2010 then migrated to 2012 after it was out for 6 months.

 

2007 was a git to setup, 2012 much, much easier. Windows-noob install guide was excellent.

 

We had around 1,000 PCs. Two sites and two schools.

Did it ourselves, again with help of windows-noob.com and *lots* of testing prior to installation.

Did them all myself from SMS all the way to 2012 R2.

 

Generally they went Ok but if you hit a snag it can be tricky to resolve.

I suspect our SCCM setup is slightly more involved..

 

We have 3 independent forests. One for Education, one for Corporate and a "midpoint".

 

Corporate and "midpoint" trust each other

Education and "midpoint" trust each other

Corporate to Education is a one way trust

Funnily enough that'll be less difficult than you think. SCCM is ideal for that sort of setup; in fact the default walkthrough installation is for a forest/multi domain setup rather than a single primary. Whatever route you take you'll need to do testing anyway, I suspect it will be worth your time. Besides which, the installation and initial setup process gives you a great footing for using/administering it in future, something you will never get from a 3rd party doing it for you and any amount of documentation.

First time I had it installed by a consultant, it kind of worked, but I wasn't happy with it's performance so I did it again and everyone is much happier with it now. I've installed it twice more since - once with the windows noob walkthrough and once from memory.

That said with a good handover and references to the online resources, you can get yourself up to speed quite quickly, and sometimes circumstance require more time than is available to one person in a 24hr period
