For now. The fact that the EU referendum will be coming will temper the rise soon enough.

Must admit, backing the winning team does make me feel good.

 

All that talk of "zero hour contracts" and "bedroom taxes" earlier in this thread seems a long way away.

Interestingly, the markets are all up as well after the result...

 

Only because of the stability inherent in having a clear result; they'd dropped due to the predictions of hung & minority parliaments. They'd have done the same if it'd been a Lab majority, I expect.

 

Of course the markets are up! Which party is all about making the City even richer?

I did notice in some of the results that there was an increase in Tory votes...

Will be interesting to see how the opposition parties do in the Scottish Parliament elections and in 2020...

As a female, I am pleased to see this on the BBC

In a dramatic change to the political landscape, the number of women in Parliament has risen by about a third.

 

With results in 637 of the 650 seats declared, about 30% of MPs are women - up from 23% before the election. This represents the largest increase since 1997

A long way away? Seems closer than ever from where I sit. We can now look forward to...

 

Bedroom Tax staying and continuing to hurt the poor

5+ Bedroom Council houses being sold off further depleting stock

Housing Association homes being sold off cheap under right to buy

"Affordable housing" being built for land lords to rent at sky high fees and not have to worry about maintenance

 

The housing crises is now officially over - we now have a homeless crises :(

Admittedly this is coming on the back of three or four years of almost nil respect for the man, after voting for his party in 2010, but I don't think I've ever had more respect for Clegg than after that speech:

If our losses today are part-payment for every family that is more secure because of a job we helped create, every person with depression who is treated with the compassion they deserve, every child who does a little better in school, every apprentice with a long and rewarding career to look forward to, every gay couple who know their love is worth no less than everyone else's, and every pensioner with a little more freedom and dignity in retirement, then I hope our losses can be endured with a little selfless dignity.

 

I suppose we'll find out now just how much the Lib Dems did manage to rein in the Tories, or if it was all bluster. 5 years of nastiness might be the only saving grace for the LDs, so they can stand and say "I told you so".

I was thinking the same thing, now we'll really see what this Tory government is all about; I suspect I won't like it one bit.

Amen. I thoroughly expect Cameron & Osbourne to continue to blame all ills on the previous Labour administration far beyond the point of reason :p

 

I only half-jest - apparently Cameron is still carrying round the bit of paper from 5 years ago, saying "There's no money left".

On the bright side...we will have a completely new set of leaders to vote for next time. This being my 3rd election, I've voted 3 different ways as my political knowledge has changed.

 

1st election I voted labour as I enjoyed the public spending boom as it helped me in my job.

 

2nd election lib dems as I wanted the reduction in uni fees and a few other promises they were looking at giving

 

3rd - conservatives. Frankly under their government I've had a better standard of living than under labour. I don't pay as much taxes. I don't have to worry about my concessionary travel costs as it's covered. I've found employment much quicker.

 

I'm not saying I am 100% conservatives but they are the ones that has screwed me over the least.

Theresa May has already confirmed the Data snooping act the Lib Dems blocked will become law.

How, exactly, can she say it will be law? Don't the MP's have to agree on it? I know the Conservatives now how the 326 seats they need (so if they all vote yes that's over 50% agreement.. What's the percentage needed?)

Just a majority, that's all they need.
