All of this still makes me hate the FPTP system. SNP got 1.4m votes and get 54 seats. Greens get 1 million votes and get 1 seat... Or Lib Dem's get 2.1m votes and get 8 seats. Entirely undemocratic and unfair.

Horrible results so far. Think I may take up alcoholism.

 

Things to look forward to:

 

1. EU referendum

2. Scotland pushing for another independence referendum

3. An attempt to get rid of the hunting ban

4. More cuts and attacks on the poor and disabled

5. More wealth going straight into the pockets of the rich

6. More privatisation of the NHS

7. More badger culling

 

Yay.

When we have 650 odd MPs to elect how can it be fairer? I agree is sucks and there will be calls for change (UKIP got millions of votes!) But how?

Well at least the Scottish referendum won't happen. They had their shot... what will it turn into otherwise: one a year? That is not democracy when you revote when you don't get the answer you want.

 

Some may argue, given the results, she's been given a fresh mandate by the people of Scotland. Anyway, pundits on the Beeb have suggested she doesn't want a re-run in the next 5 years anyway. Devo-Max is the thing now. There's some talk about turning the UK into a Federated state (good idea in my books), but reports suggest that's a step too far for Cameron.

 

Now, with the clear rise in UKIP (they got 2nd in a lot of places), anyone want to place bets on the 2017 EU referendum?

My constituency has swung towards a labour majority now, from 504 last time to several thousand this time on the turnout, which is little surprise here. Gower is a surprise and very marginal I see locally.

 

I am glad on reflection that Lib Dems have taken a kicking and paid the price for propping up the tory government of last time (I say that as a previous lib dem voter).

 

Sadly my thoughts came true, I could only see Cameron winning in the run up and the continued misery it means for this country having a tory government which pick on the weaker parts of society, lots know that tory pain having been born into thatcherism.

 

Ed just was not PM material I felt, he lacked gravitas and I just don't think a lot of people accepted him, especially in light of how he grasped the leadership of the party, it immediately put a lot of people off him I think to openly stab family in the chest and suck up to trade unions to get leader instead of voting, added to the economy woes the labour party left the country in, it was a terribly hard sell.

Everyone seems horrified that it looks like Conservative will get a majority. Everyone I've seen, everything I've read online. So who on earth did all that voting for them? Or perhaps it's just the company I keep only shows a particular view.

I do think FPTP isnt ideal here anymore, if you look at the weighting of votes against the parties actual representation as pointed out, its no true reflection of the wishes of the counties electorate, alternatives though I do not know about there.

 

Proportional representation would be interesting against these results if based on the vote turnout I think.

 

Edit: I just found out about Balls, hes a big scalp taken there from the labour party.

If we were to adopt PR then then we would need to ensure that virtually everyone voted to ensure that the % is accurate...

Low turnoouts, spoils and alike would have a major impact on the result and wouldn't be really that accurate

At least Mr Balls loosing his seat is a good thing.

If it was loose, then he should have tightened it so has wasn't at risk of losing it ;)

I support fining people for not voting as well myself, should be same as Australia for us, fines levied for not doing so.

Looking at the results, the mistake a lot of people made was to vote UKIP as a protest against Conservative and Liberal. Voting Labour may have made the difference
