I'd like to vote Labour, but around here that would be a wasted vote. Will have to be Lib-Dem as they are the only possible challengers to the Torys.

'ang on, what?!

[snip]

There's no easy answer, is there? :(

But my view is that just because they're incapable of thinking ahead and supporting a child, doesn't mean they're incapable of loving a child. Stereotypes can be made and assumptions can be jumped to about the quality of care seen in a lot of these homes*, but at the end of the day could you really drag a healthy child away from a healthy family and a loving environment simply becuse their income doesn't reach some arbitrary level set by some landed toff in Westminster who has absolutely no concept of what actual poverty is?

I know that continuing to fund these families is what breeds the sentiment of "the world owes me", but I guess I'm too soft a touch to punish a child for the mistakes of the parents.

And good use of the proper meaning of blood thicker than water - I believe it was a phrase used by soldiers originally, no? :)

*favourite example: large family on holiday in Skeg, wandering past the ice cream shack I was working in. The mother turns round to one whining child and declares "if you don't stop &*%$ing crying and start $&£%ing enjoying yourself right now, I'm going to %*£&ing smack you!" Right, yup, I'm sure that child will cheer right up now.

Completely agree, but love doesn't put food on the table :( If I were to cut out all emotions I'd say "We're overpopulated. Child benefit supports one child. You want any more kids, you pay for them yourself." but that's just going to leave a lot of children hungry and in rags because their parents senselessly had children without the cash to support them - possibly even some working families who might only be able to get part-time work or may have a disability etc. And the aforementioned overloading of the care system means we can't take the children away and give them a better upbringing because people don't seem to want to adopt anymore, so chances are a lot of them won't have a better upbringing..

I repeat my earlier sentiment. Sucks, yo.

Britian? lol

No, no, no. Britian is the name of his maid. She had a nasty tumble a while ago (which is why Cameron made all those videos where he was doing 'normal people stuff' like washing the dishes).

Well, quite frankly congratulations everyone for getting to 4 pages of actual discussion without anyone being compared to Hitler or insulting anyone's mum.

I will be voting Lib Dem, because their is no point voting Labour - Opinion poll's suggest Labour here are behind both UKIP and Green - and because the local Lib Dem candidate has an excellent record as an MP.

Whoops, we're behind schedule! Uh.. Quick.. YOUR MUM'S HITLER!

I, too, share the sentiments. I was quite surprised to see post #4 saying "I'm voting UKIP" and yet we're still nice and peaceful :p

Realistically I think I'll vote Labour, but I've still got a lot of research to do. It's a shame we can't have a vote of no confidence, I honestly think it should be a thing.

First time voting in GE, very excited to do so! I wish more young people were encouraged to do so! Would like to see voting age lowered to 16 but I am sure that is another topic for another day!

Labour in our area never does well, Conservatives took it in 2010 with a large swing (Perhaps that had something to do with our Liberal Democrat MP being Lembit Opik...)

Have some sort of idea who I am going to vote for, but am waiting for candidates to actually come and knock on my door - I want to see them doing something!

(Also heres my funny niggle - everyone in this thread keeps saying 'my MP' technically under the law, due to dissolution, till 18th May you have no MP or representation! :troll:)

Right now, I live in the South West. The local MPs are currently in the news quite a bit about the incinerator in Gloucestershire, which unsurprisingly Labour are fighting against & the Tories are pushing through. What are your thoughts on the local MPs @mrbios?

I reckon the green party are going to be really strong in Stroud this time around, and could potentially win it, although i don't know much about what their policies are for stroud. David Drew has been the Labour MP here for too long and needs to let someone else take over, and neil carmichael i haven't liked since day one, his policies for the next 5 years don't particularly fill me with confidence either. I'm definitely against the incinerator too!

The thing i don't like with my local MPs is that they all want to stop housing development on green land, the frustrating thing is i feel like stroud needs more housing, but they're constantly wanting to put it on land that would have the worst transport routes or land that is the most picturesque rather than picking out other areas that would make more sense......and when the hell is one of these damn parties going to knock down tricorn house! >_<

I don't really know anything about the local MPs for other areas of gloucester i must admit :(

I personally don't want to be part of a society that doesn't believe in pulling its weight, but champions laziness and the idea that someone else will work hard and pick up the tab for me, and I'll be voting that way.

You believe in selfishness?

Where did I say I didn't think people should pull their eight? You sound like the fear mongers : reasons to have slavery...

Im not sure which to vote this time. Im not partisan, but always been more left wing that right wing, but i am tempted this time to do something very extreme and vote UKIP. I want something very seriously done on the immigration issues and the other parties don't seem to take this subject seriously. No way I'm voting Labour (and i have before) with the current leader of the party, he's just not leader material in my eyes and don't want that to be the face of the UK, his brother would have been the better choice.

I know you weren't quoting me, but I believe that if you earn it, it is yours, it shouldn't be taxed beyond reasonable levels...and anything over 40% is unreasonable in my opinion.

As for how I vote, I will be voting based on these principles.

Welfare is a safety net for a brief period, NOT a way of life.

People should be working where possible.

Taxes should be measured out properly, not just tax the rich because they're rich, but conversely, shouldn't penalise the poor either.

Public services should have a reasonable budget, and not be over spending (like when I was working in a school, they had to spend £100k because they'd lose it otherwise and couldn't bank it for the next year).

That is how my vote shall be spent.

I agree with all of these FS, but I won't be voting Labour and I certainly won't be voting Conservative, because I believe neither want those things. Where are you on the political compass (on the other t)?hread

No I was quoting Diello spectre.

I think it depends on how much you earn and how you earn it. Tax dodging should be outlawed, obviously. People like the Waltons in America making profit on the greater population subsidising them via the benefits system should also be outlawed. I don't believe in taxing for no good reason. We should all bear a fair share of that. Obscene wealth, and that's the problem, has to be controlled somehow. 1% of the population being allowed to greedily squander wealth because they have the power to make that happen is not right.

I'm sorry if this offends anyone, but to me UKIP are simply the face of what has become an increased form of "acceptable racism under the banner of free speech". Just astonishes me that it's become acceptable to behave this way because people think the country is too "politically correct"!

The only party I can vote for with a clean conscience is Green. Unfortunately, they don't appear to be fielding a candidate in my constituency, which just so happens to be one of, if not the safest Labour seat in the country. So, once again, I shall be spoiling my ballot paper.

Whenever I do the "who should I vote for" I pretty much get the same results everytime. 95% Green, 92% Labour & 89% Lib Dem. Although I get 98% with Plaid Cymru, but as I don't live in Wales its kind os a moot point. However I intend to Vote Green in May but you haven't put them in your Poll. So I think your poll is rigged just like the real elections in this country.

You've missed a lot of other parties out there, how about the Greens, the Scottish, Welsh and NI parties, of course also not forgetting the Monster Raving Loonies :-)

This....

I normally vote SNP as they are very good at dealing with things in my area. But since the whole referendum malarkey and not answering vital questions, I'm not sure now. Feeling mildly better that Alex Salmond is not (meant to be) in charge now however.

Once thing I do hate about politics is how they keep telling us to vote for them cause all the other parties are rubbish/lie to us/will drown us all in debt. They are all as bad as each other in certain respects. I vote for the least worse for my area.

In local elections I just vote for the person living nearest me. Regardless of their party affiliation I like to think they will go out of their way to keep their area nice.

Not quite as straight-forward with general elections

You believe in selfishness?

Where did I say I didn't think people should pull their eight? You sound like the fear mongers : reasons to have slavery...

I believe that you should get out what you put in with hard graft. I believe that if you put in x hours work, you should get a reasonable wage for those hours based on your skill-set. I believe if you work hard you should be compensated better, and allowed to live a better quality of life, than those who choose not to. I believe if you can't work, or can't find work, or fall on hard times through the actions of others, you should be supported to a minimum living standard that is necessary to provide a roof over your head, food, and warmth. I don't believe people should expect others to maintain their life-style because they chose not to work, or because they are not able to get a job that pays enough to support the life style they want.

If you want to talk of selfishness, I'd say expecting someone else to support you so you don't have to make an effort, or expecting to live off other people's hard work, is the height of selfishness.

Perhaps we are talking at cross-purposes. You said earlier "I personally don't want to be part of a society that doesn't believe in sharing" - I suppose it depends to what degree you mean. I have no problem losing some of my income to support a disabled person, or a mother with three kids where the father suddenly walks out and leaves them destitute. I do have a problem with Person A working their backside off for 12 hours a day, and Person B sitting on their backside all day because they can't be bothered, and Person A being expected to share that money with Person B, against their will, as some skewed definition of equality. Why is it whenever the left talk of equality, they always mean equality of what you get out of it, never equality of what you put into it?

I really don't see where slavery comes into it... In either side of the fence, it would be an extreme example, although I think an analogy would better fit my point.

I largely agree with you. Having said that, an Immigration Policy that treats all the world's citizens equally and allows migration based on a level playing field, would be better than the EU policy of favouring citizens from EU countries. I can't help but feel that we're losing out on a lot of talent from outside the EU because of their open-door policy. Not that UKIP are in anyway, shape, or form, the answer, but neither is the EU super-state...

I agree with everything you've said there Diello. Only those concerns are at the bottom of my radar where they belong. I preferred the 194x welfare system recently explored on a TV program, where the person was addressed and helped rather than our current system that treats people as failures to be persecuted just because they find themselves out of work. People abuse that system because that's the game. The only way to survive is to play. A few people are abusing the system, and most of those working in the system are taking tax payers money for nothing. The current system promotes an uncaring society. Sorting that out shouldn't mean giving more money to system abusers so that they can have newer and bigger TVs, phones, clothes and housing. Sorting that out should mean putting in place a system that actually does what it's intended to do. Putting a profit oriented organisation in charge of that like the capitalists think is the answer to everything, simply doesn't work. The only people to benefit from that are the very wealthy. You and I lose out.

Agreed. They're like the diet coke 'one calorie' version of the BNP in my book. They claim otherwise but I simply don't trust them.

I think that the problem is not so much what UKIP says, some of their policies seem like common sense. The problem is their motivation. It makes me really quite concerned for the future when people like this are able to gain so much coverage.
