We currently have 2 x Netgear ReadyNAS's placed in different location around the school, but one has packed in and I am looking for alternative as although they did the job, I was never keen on the web GUI to create the shares. Any help would be great Cheers

Gardinho Posted March 20, 2015 Posted March 20, 2015 QNAP or Synology are the 2 I'd recommend. QNAPs hardware is probably the slightly better of the 2, but the software is better on the Synology.

The Synology Hybrid RAID feature is really useful. You can put different capacity drives into an array and it helps maximise storage capabilities. Not sure if there's a feature like this on the QNAPs? We've got 2 x QNAP 419 Rack NAS devices that haven't missed a beat. At home I've got a 16b, 4 bay Synology DS414 which has also been awesome. 3s-gtech Posted March 20, 2015 Posted March 20, 2015 We have a fairly wide selection of NASs so I can give some experience: Buffalo - slow, like to break and drop off the domain. Underlying hardware is tough - we have a nine year old model going strong having only had a couple of failed drives (as you'd expect). Iomega - not sure if they're still available? Some nice features, but likes to kill disks and then randomly fail on the domain. Not a fan overall. Netgear ReadyNAS - not bad. Basic, good value, reliable. Netgear ReadyNAS Pro - a bit of a beast. Very reliable, quick. We use one to host VM backups. Big fan. Synology - we have two DS1513+ and a little two bay DS214 too. Aside from a random IP address issue one had, these are my favourites. Impressive performance, reliability, features and software. Worth the cost. 1

No major issues with either other than the quirky web interface... I think we are in a minority though - on edugeek there doesn't seem to be much love for Buffalo!

I've got one at my other school that I backup stuff too and my husband has a load dotted about his school with minimal issues

True, but I've been using a TeraStation Pro TS-HTGL/R5 for about 5 years without issue. Going to replace with a couple of mirrored TeraStation 1400s after Easter.

bossman Posted March 20, 2015 Posted March 20, 2015 +1 for Synology, actually running VMs on ours at the moment as the old SAN has ran out of space, RAID 6 33TB formatted storage for £4k IOPs a plenty. Did look at Netgear and QNAPs also Nimble but non could match the performance, I have just priced up 2 x RS3146xs+ models with SSD drives giving 5TB formatted storage with sync for failover at a cost of £11k the IOPs are unbelievable and they are fully hypervisor certified for Citrix, VMWare and Hyper-V excellent value for money. Ohh! forgot............................they come with 5 years warranty as standard
southhamster Posted March 20, 2015 Posted March 20, 2015 Qnap.219pii is great for SOHO. 269 for higher performance and the mighty 459 with 4 network ports and VM hosting. I've installed 6 qnaps of various spec over 5 years with no failures or problems (except for HD failures) but then thats what RAID is for. Great feature is RAID drive expansion on the fly.

Asgard Posted March 20, 2015 Posted March 20, 2015 I wonder if your Netgear issue could be lun size. The latest firmware fixed it so that you couldn't create a LUN that was more than 90% of the total available space - as the OS still needs space, etc Very daft until they figured it out and fixed it and VERY frustrating when I had to trash a 24tb LUN because of it. We have 3 ReadyNas Pro316 for DPM and apart from this issue they have ran flawlessly - one is even off site at another location (offsite dpm)

( could be wrong though!) Looking at a new backup option to put in budget.

Looking at a new backup option to put in budget. got a few old g7 ones out there running slightly old versions of freenas with 4gb ram. one school is supposed to be ordering a g8 version with 8gb soon

Had a range of Buffalo's in my last job all in the end went west, performance slowed right down, AD integration that they claimed worked never did correctly and generally yeh ok to start with but as they went on not great, replaced them all with a nice shiny new tape system. Have got a QNAP TS-453 Pro at home after being recommended it by @Domino and it looking a great bit of kit for home use, so cannot complain so far and seems well built and a decent bit of kit so could be good for small schools use
