Of the new colour scheme, just those 2.5, the Neurothrope, the Hormagaunt and the ripper on the Parasite base. And my second Screamer is about 50% done.

Once that's finished I'll be doing the Parasite since its base is now done and I primed the model yesterday.

I've also done the bases for 3x actual Rippers, 4x Warriors (well, 3 warriors and 1 with an interchangeable torso for Tyranid Prime) and 1x Tervigon so they just need priming and painting.

I do have, I think, 3 Zoanthropes, a Hive Tyrant, a Winged Hive Tyrant, a Termagant and a Hormagaunt of my old scheme to repaint. Though they've all been varnished, and I haven't tried stripping them yet.

I must say all these impressive looking Nids makes me long to have my GSC painted up and ready to play. But the current edition is just not to my liking unfortunately.

Fingers crossed the supposed release of 10th edition this summer will change that! If not, I fear I might end up shifting some of my unused 40k stuff as I don't think I'll ever go back to it.

Forgot to post this one on Saturday!

Second Screamer-Killer painted in the new scheme. Haven't attempted to strip the first one yet!

All magnetised, each of the scything talons, the head, and the top part of the carapace are all removable/swappable.

(Also, curse having to shrink my images, apparently my phone camera is too good :p)

Well the rules 'leaks' thus far for 10th have certainly rekindled my interest! Even took to going up the loft to find where the Emperor's finest had been banished to in readiness!

I'm going to be interested to see the new rules, too. What's been teased all sounds sensible to me. I've never played 9th, oweing mainly to a social life not conducive to regular games but also to the impenetrable and fragmented rules. Army and terrain selection seemed to basically be as gamified as the actual game, and relied on having as much knowledge of the opponents' choices as your own. 10th seems to be geared towards lowering that kind of friction, and not having to play regularly so as to attain the requisite level of grok.

Not that the chances of me actually playing games of 10th are looking that much brighter, though.

I haven't actually played since 5th edition (okay, I then dropped out until 9th, but shush) but the leaks for 10th definitely seems like the right direction. Some bits of 9th seem needlessly complicated ('nids have 2 different deep strike rules, for example)

Though suddenly I'm less enthusiastic about painting now that I know new sculpts are coming (although the new 'gants do look great, admittedly)

Agreed - I only played one game of 9th and that was enough for me to know it had sucked all the fun out of it by turning it into Bookkeeping 40,000. Hopefully this looks to be trying to reduce a lot of that, and although it might make the game more 'simplified' maybe it's a sign of old age that I actually welcome that simplification!

And yes, very jealous of the new 'gant models, although the new Termi models are looking nice as well. Maybe just a few more recruits for the 1st Company then ....

I found it basically impossible to make any judgement on a unit's effectiveness based on the unit's own stats. Obscure stratagems, FAQs, Codex army rules belonging to a faction I don't own or stuff in serialised rules supplements would add layers of complexity that wipe out the core "strength vs toughness" comparisons that are about as in depth as I can manage.

e.g. I'm going to fire a bunch of long range rifles at some T'au, but oh no, drones end up shooting the bullets out of the sky and then the enemy unit flies across the table during my own turn and charges whilst also shooting twice at me and I get no saving throws. I didn't know any of that because I hadn't read the T'au Codex or taken account of the fact that their custom sub-faction includes a rule that gives all units in their army some aura ability when within 72" of any of my units.

I'm exaggerating of course, but basically that's why I like painting more than playing.

I've dug out all my Imperial Guard (now Astra Militarum), and Daemonhunters (now Grey Knights, and Inquisition which is only available via a supplementary download on the Warhammer Community website).

I'd painted 2 models about 15 years ago and everything else was either unpainted or only undercoated in black.

So far I've got 5 test models that I've put the first layer on, to work out what paint scheme I want for my Guardsmen. Hopefully I'll have decided by the end of the week and I can get started next weekend as it's a long one for Easter :)

A friend more familiar with the rules than myself has said 10th Edition should be much easier and we both intend to get back into playing it once it's out. He also mentioned something about Codices not being required?

'Codices' are still required, in the sense that they have your unit datasheets in and you probably want to know what your units stats and abilities are, though not in their current iteration.

Purchasing your codex isn't required. 10th edition rules and datasheets are all going to be released 100% for free.

They will be selling datacards still, which will have essentially datasheet flashcards in them, so might still be worth buying, but essentially the rulebook and army rules won't cost you a penny if you don't want to spend anything.

On the first day of the new edition, the rules for every datasheet in 40k will be free to download, or available to buy as convenient and portable card decks. Even your faction and army rules now take up just a couple of pages.

Just to make things super clear, they've reaffirmed the codex situation

These much-needed simplifications are substantial enough that, from a rules perspective at least, every ninth edition codex has been rendered obsolete.

The associated packs of datacards are also obsolete.

You will nevertheless be able to play your chosen army as soon as the new edition lands. We are releasing revamped, restatted, and reconsidered datasheets for every single unit in the game – all free to download at launch and ready to go. You’ll also be able to buy inexpensive packs of these cards at launch.

I'll probably pick up the datacards because they sound super useful - previously I've made and printed my own pseudo-datacards in Excel for my Drukhari army like the big nerd I am, though I expect these official ones to be a little bit more hard-wearing!

Agreed, the datacards sound like they're going to be the business, although I still suspect that Codices will be a thing (where would all the lore live, otherwise?), and that datacards will get updated whenever a Codex is released. Whether those updated datacards will remain free to download is not certain, but I suspect GW is following a more general trend in the market of rules being free online.

In the games of 8th that I played, we tended to just use printouts from Battlescribe. All the rules you need for that game and none that you didn't. The layout was super basic, though, and I never got around to getting any plugins working that would have formatted it all in a nice GW-style design. I like your Excel work!

I still use Battlescribe despite owning both my armies codices, it's far simpler, though for 40K that's going the way of the dodo. GeeDubs' lawyers decided to C&D them almost a year ago, so 9th ed will be their last.

Their 10th ed articles mentioned a roster builder, so I guess we know why now.

Edit: Did some googling, looks like the entire project has been abandoned! 40k must have been the lion's share of their users by a considerable margin!

Yeah, I'm hoping that 'the app' and W+ don't become too central to the design of the game, because having that pushed at every turn will just grate. The simpler army selection stuff should make a 'good-enough' roster builder more achievable for them, though. Interesting that the datacards don't appear to have any model quantities stated on them for units.

Well spotted, I hadn't noticed that!

Perhaps they're keeping everything under wraps that to drip-feed, after all the first datacard they released was the Termagant but it only had the Fleshborer on there.

Probably not, though. It's likely that squad sizes are on the codex bit, which will include the same "for every X models..." rules we all know and love.

Posted
There's also no points cost or power level on there, which would seem like a reasonable thing to expect for a system based more on cards than books. Perhaps the costs and unit sizes are specified on a separate list to help tailor the datacards nicely for the Combat Patrol game mode, where the unit sizes and costs are irrelevant.
Posted

I don't particularly think the new system is 'based on' the cards, I think the cards are still a supplementary thing you can buy if you want a physical option (or don't own a printer) much like they have been previously, but it feels very much to me that the new system is based on the new rules being free online. I suspect their suspicion is that most people will either print their rules off, or have the web page/pdf/etc for their army on their phone.

I haven't really put much thought into it truth be told, but haven't model/wargear points have always been a 'back of the book' thing anyway? I suspect the 'two page rules' for each army they've mentioned a few times is simply stat sheets and keyword explanations (Tyranids' Synapse, Drukhari's Power from Pain, or CSM's prayers immediately spring to mind) with points being kept separate (hey, at least we're losing power values that literally nobody uses?)

Posted

I'm looking forward to then actually having rules that don't use an iPhone app on an iPad. Trying to read the rules on the Warhammer app on my iPad is torturous. GIVE ME FULL SCREEN.

So hopefully they'll be in PDF format.

Went to a local Games Workshop the other day, and spoke to the staff. They advised that the points costs/unit sizes etc. will all be in the one place - presumably the Rulebook - and not on the datacards.

Basically the staff don't know any more than we do :confused2:

There are also box sets available at the moment that are going to be 'equivalent' in power to each other - they're the Combat Patrols and make up 500 points with some kind of game mode specifically designed for them (although they're still regular models and can form part of a larger army). What the staff weren't sure of, was whether they had to be in the exact configuration - for example if 10 models were all one squad, or two squads of 5; or whether they all had to be armed exactly as they are in the Combat Patrol.

Armies also no longer need to have certain units to be able to take other units - e.g. 2 troops per HQ unit (I don't know if that's a thing, I haven't played since 5th edition). Instead you take 1 Character (or HQ to my mind), then can pick pretty much anything except only up to three of the same unit. Fullinformation here.

Also each faction has a list of 'detachments' which are rulesets unique to that detachment, for example each chapter of Space Marines. The example given was you could have an army of Dark Angels (in terms of models and colour scheme) but make them behave like Space Wolves, or Ultramarines. More information on their website.

Posted

Reading about the new detachments rules, it feels like the launch freebie rules will be reasonably generic/vanilla for each faction, but the Codexes when they come will have maybe something like a dozen or so faction-specific and more flavourful detachments. So yes, the faction rules will fit on one double-page spread, but you'll end up with a bunch of double-page spreads to flick between and choose from prior to the game. It also means that if you don't know the opposing Codex inside out, you're still kinda in the dark as to what might be being thrown at you.

I can imagine lots of rules supplement releases that have new, campaign-specific detachment rulesets included.

I'm likely to give 10th a wide berth for a while, maybe the odd game but nothing too serious. Definitely contemplating some Horus Heresy though.

I'm also super-excited for The Old World which is currently rumoured for release at the end of the year.

So much so that this week I've been furiously printing a whole bunch of Skaven (thanks Cults3D) so I'll have a force ready for christmas!

Little hobby update. I forgot to add these to previous post.

Turtle progresses well. Really happy with the stonework in particular.

But these little ratmen will be a tough distraction to ignore.

Oh, how I would love for TOW to be end of the year!

I still own Wood Elf, O&G, Daemons, VC, Empire and Dwarfs from before they blew it up, and am currently building a 3D printed Dark Elf list to the collection, so the release can't come soon enough! (Even if they are borking up the base sizes! *grumbles* )
