If you can't can a print driver 'cause it's in use, get it as far as you can before having to press the final 'delete' button, then wait. Open cmd, net stop spooler. Net start spooler. Then be ready to click 'Delete' as soon as the print spooler starts again. That'll do the trick

I'm liking this! The teacher did say to the technician who sorted out the confusion "Well what I was doing was right - but I just had the wrong controller". Can't argue with that logic!

99/100 times it works for me, once in a blue moon I'm not quick enough. Though, this is removing driver and package via Devices and Printers/Print Server Properties, so it might be different operations.

Occasionally HP drivers bork up and need removing, GPO puts them back on at reboot and all is well, but you can never just outright delete them. Always gotta bounce the spooler, so I've had plenty of practice.

if you set the printer to offline before (print queue printer menu use printer off line) you dont even need to hurry to delete it it will just sit there until you put it back online *still need to stop/start spooler though usually)

Not so much "learned" as "realised" that thanks to Remote Desktop Connection I can service all of the PC's around my second school all from my own desk rather than having to crouch/kneel/sit on tiny chairs to do it. Much better!

"learned" that all RM motherboards have a thermal fault once they have completely discharged- and I found out the fix--so those ones sitting under my desk not working for a month now work.....

it apparently affects all laptops - basically if they completely lose charge they act as if dead-- something to do with a thermal charge still on the motherboard - simple fix is - turn off, remove battery, plug into mains, replace battery. allows motherboard to discharge.

 

not so simple fix is leave under desk for weeks waiting for new warranty details from Kelway- motherboard discharges - another engineer comes in, tells you about fix, trys laptops and they work...... wonderful.

My method has one addition: disconnecting from the mains, taking out the battery and holding the power button down for 20 secs - was told it discharges the capacitors on the motherboard. Then plug into mains, replace battery etc

Today I realised one thing that's been annoying me and learnt another that will stop a lot of annoyances.

 

1) I've been experimenting with setting power plans by GPP. I set the Power Saver plan in the computer GPO, so that machines with no-one logged in would save energy, then set the Balanced plan in the user GPO to override when someone logged in.

 

Computers kept reverting to the Power Saver, limiting the CPU, turning the display, lots of little annoyances.

 

Today I realised that it was the group policy refresh after 90 minutes causing me grief - because although computer GPOs are processed at start up then user at logon, giving user policies precedence, policy refreshes do user first then computer, so the computer policy was suddenly taking precedence and reverting machines to the Power Saver. D'oh!

 

2) Using uBlock, all I need to do to block those stupid "You may also be interested in... 15 Sights You'll See on the Beach This Summer! Rich people don't want you to know this trick! UK Man finds pill that DESTROYS fat!" blocks is click the uBlock icon, click the eyedropper icon, click on the offending block of rubbish and click Create [filter]. No faffing around working out the filter or using Fiddler to find web addresses - just 4 clicks. Oh frabjous day!

 

(I should point out that edugeek is the only site allowed on my white list, and I see all its ads. Well, I say see - they're on my screen, but my brain has a remarkably effective built in ad blocker...)

In other news, and veering wildly on-topic, I discovered how to fix a totally stuffed graphics system on (Debian-based) Linux.

 

sudo apt-get remove --purge nvidia*
 sudo apt-get remove --purge xserver-xorg-video-nouveau xserver-xorg-video-nv
 sudo apt-get remove --purge xorg-driver-fglrx fglrx*

 

And reboot. Much to my surprise all was well when it restarted.

So entirely by accident, today I discovered that if you select a range of dates in Outlook's mini-calendar (top left), it will display exactly those dates in the main view--e.g. click and drag over two dates to see appointments for those two days.
