To be honest, we were looking at VDI about 6 months ago but there was no cost savings, in fact it worked out a lot more expensive over 5 years than buying 100 fat clients. Given our budgets over the next 5 years, it just wasn't a cost effective route

From the amount of end clients that we need to replace even if we went VDI it's becoming more costly to the point of why add the additional work. Huge upfront cost when budgets already low haha Steve

A years support on those 100 user was just over 4k per year. and thats not including hardware! Edited February 13, 2015 by techie08

Have you looked at Synology stuff they have some very quick NAS/SAN hybrid kit which is well worth looking at and all Hypervisor certified with all the different models, Been running half a dozen VM's off the one we have and it only has SATA drives in, the new ones you can mix and match SSDs and SATA 7200rpm 8TB drives together for extra caching performance. Just a thought as these units full of drives only retail around £5k or less 1

Savings always good and appreciated Just wonder how much they support in terms of VMs before it does strain it, running about 40~ currently. Steve

Give them a bell and tell them what you looking for, we currently been quoted for 2 more Hybrid solutions for complete failover for our VM's, we are moving to either VMWare or Hyper-V depending on the outcome of a meeting with our LA, just depends what they will support or we may have to move to third party support as my role within the school has changed due to JRE and I used to support all of it. Sylv3r Posted February 13, 2015 Posted February 13, 2015 We were a EMC SAN Customer (and still using it) before we went for the new Dell SAN in the summer. Would have happily bought EMC again, just the cost was slightly more out of our price range. Couldn't fault the EMC kit or support though.
mrbios Posted February 13, 2015 Posted February 13, 2015 Looking at something similar myself at the moment, albeit not for VDI. Had a lot of opinions passed from those in private sector jobs and the general conclusion seems to be that HP are poor, EMC's support has been flakey recently but the product is otherwise brilliant, Dell are 50/50 depending on what device you're after (poor opinions shared over equalogic line, good ones shared about compellant line) .... nothing but positive opinions on nimble from the support and product side of things. A few other recommendations i'd been given but those were the main ones. Obviously can't recommend a specific device without lots of information but i'd say speak to EMC (Quite a few people can supply them, novatech for one who are sorting me a quote for a VNXe 3200) pretty sure I'm going to end up going with a Nimble CS215 + 10GB option though at the moment unless the VNXe really sells itself to me.

Buy a Nimble SAN they handle more IOPs and are the best option for schools... No I don't have one but I bought a chunk of their stock for my pension portfolio because of the praise they got from fellow geeks on here and they panned. Could do with getting some of my cash back so forget everything else buy Nimble!

What model and how much did you pay 18 months ago if you don't mind me asking? I've just had a quote for a CS210 and a CS215 with varying options, and the prices seem very reasonable given what i'm comparing it against

bart21 Posted February 14, 2015 Posted February 14, 2015 Netapp can do huge amounts including snapshot ting of exchange and sql. They are really good bits of kit.

We brought the netapp for its snapshotting feature and its duplication, small wasn't really on the list tho Have you looked at the dell equlalogic?
