LiamH Posted December 18, 2014 Posted December 18, 2014 When i started my new job the toolbox had a really odd swiss army style screwdriver, when i looked it up out of curiosity it was older than me! (made in the 50's) Also had teachers bring in ancient text books asking if they are still good.

It also came with about 20 old style large floppy disks and box with instructions. Back from when floppy disks were actually floppy by the sounds of it!

Someone asked for a Sony Memory Stick reader (they use them as well as floppys) the other day. I sent them packing with a USB cable and told them to plug the camera in! Oldest kit was at the last place. Science had a stack of BBC Micro's in their conservatory compete with cube monitors! Also the head of ICT gave me a beige PowerMac G3 while I was there which I spent too much money refurbing to run OS X. Used as my main PC for a while. Here, admin were cleaning out their store last week and came upon boxed containing old back up tapes. Including something that looked like this: The box also contained floppies going back to 1993! They also found pupil records going back to the 1950's! But the question was, what have I been given back that I was surprised was still in use. The oldest so far was an Ergo Ensis S: Thought I'd got rid of them all years ago, grrr.
HTCPCP Posted December 18, 2014 Posted December 18, 2014 We had until last year an old monochrome (well black and green) CRT monitor on a standalone non networked/non internet enabled machine running Win 95 that was used to run a laser cutter with a USB floppy disk drive to save the work to... Not a clue how long it was there for... All gone now and replaced with a shiny new machine which can actually properly run the software and they can even make edits to the work they want to use on the laser cutter!

They vanished from the office a couple of weeks later and I wondered at the time if one of my colleagues had decided to ebay them

I remember them and right back to punched tape (wouldnt mind some of that as well!) but I am 'a bit' older!

I through it all the way up to OSX 10.5 & some PPC version of firefox, but naturally performance was a joke. I've given it back to the guy that found it as I have no real use for it Some people have gutted the base & put in mac mini parts, but that seems a bit overkill...

Take full ATX boards, massive number of HDDs, triple PSU + ODDs so they both got re-used as storage servers and only recently retired. Won't be chucking them out! Thanks.... your bringing back memories, I wish I could of kept mine but believe it or not mine was stolen by some thieving scum bag when my house got burgled bye bye server, and yes mine was from an old RM CC2 server - shame I could use one now too!
truebluesteve Posted January 27, 2015 Posted January 27, 2015 A few years back a parent phoned the Assistant Head who was (then) my boss and asked if we wanted a video wall which his company was dismantling. As I was out that morning, my very excited boss said yes please, and several hours later the video wall was duly delivered and unloaded by our reception just as I arrived back at work. To my consternation, the video wall consisted of around 30 15" bare CRT monitors - many of them without cases and some with broken screens, and all completely useless to us. By this time the parent had left and we had to lug them across site to be stored until I could persuade our local recycling company to take them away for us in exchange for a couple of old servers and other goodies. Needless to say my boss never lived that down
