I guess it's just me, but that trailer was a let down after the first one.

 

It just didn't feel tight. Actually it felt like the 'George Lucas special edition' of the teaser but without the irony.

I definitely thought that, but in the timeline of things it wouldn't make sense.. Revan died like 3000 years or something (don't quote me on that) before this movie takes place - no way could his mask survive that long.

In other news: Everything We Know About The First Star Wars Spin-Off Film, Rogue One

 

 

How will Rogue One fit into the rest of the galaxy far, far away? According to Edwards the film is set after Return of the Sith and before A New Hope.

 

Edwards confirmed that the lead character Felicity Jones (whose casting was only recently revealed) will be playing a Rebel soldier. According to Disney Insider, the Jedi are basically extinct at this point, so Rogue One will be a pretty Jedi free film. The cast of characters will not have superpowers, but will still find a way to bring hope to the galaxy. This is truly the very early stages of the Rebellion.

 

But the biggest takeaway from the Rogue One panel is how this movie will be a pretty large departure from the episodic films. Kiri Hart confirmed this early on when she revealed that all the “Anthology Films” (which is how Lucasfilm is labeling the spin off movies) will “vary in scale and vary in genre.” And Rogue One sounds like it’s going to be heavily influenced by past military movies. EW reported that the major movie influences are Saving Private Ryan and Black Hawk Down and Zero Darzk Thirty. Edwards insisted, “It’s called Star WARS.” Plus the the DP of Zero Dark Thirty is shooting Rogue One

I did wonder if Kyle Katarn would be making an appearance in any of these films but honestly I don't think he will, unless.. Kylo Ren is Kyle Katarn?! Actually, no.. that's probably not true.

At the moment that's a very good thing! Current cannon is actually practically consumable within a sensible time frame (ie, there's not a lot of it). I've just read The Phantom Menace, then re-watched the film. Currently reading Attack of the Clones. With the few official books and the two cartoon TV series along the way, I can easily consume and be fully up to date with current mythology before I go see the new film in December

 

I haven't geeked out on sci-fi properly like this since Voyager was cancelled.

There is a lot of good stuff in the EU -- Leia & Han's twins! -- but it was all too detailed and full, I reckon. There was no way they could honour all that stuff and still have space to tell the story they want to tell (or any story except a bodged together mish-mash of 30 years of tie-ins) so I can understand why they did it.

I totally agree. There is far too much depth to be able to cover even a small percentage in the new movies. Hell you'd need five series of 20+ episodes of TV show to cover the Vong invasion!

 

My two exceptions however would be Kyle - Rebel operative steals death star plans and discovers he has latent force potential. That's a movie right there! And secondly Thrawn - The best Imperial character in the EU IMHO, and easy enough to slipstream him into the new movies without having him steal the show.
