I start "officially" at 08:15 and finish at 16:45. However, I have been in today since just after 7 and you've guessed it, am still sat at my desk underneath a mountain of things that I need to get done.

Is this common?! Or am I just being crazy.

let me guess, you don't get any recognition for doing the extra hours and you don't get any extra pay but you do it for the love of it. It is quite common but the good news is:

You don't have to.

I know I don't have to and occasionally I will claim for the overtime however I am very proud of my network. I have built something "if I do say so myself" that is fairly impressive from an old Novel network that was STILL using some coax when I took it over less than a couple of years ago.

Hopefully another member (Namely Uraken) who knows me personally will come along and substantiate my claim of network greatness :-))

I just feel like I owe it so much now as it has become almost a part of me (I know it owes me far more than I owe it).

I might go home now.....

I officially start at 7:45am & finish at 3:45 with half an hour for lunch.

I normally start at a 7:30am & finish at 3:30pm with no lunch break. When I get home I often connect to the network to do some more work or research something or other on the net to do with work.

I can't claim to have created a great network, but I think I do a fair job as I am the only one to look after the network & whole school computer system & anything else that is remotely technical. I think my problem is I have been at the school to long (23 years next June) & know how the school operates. Obviously not been doing the same job all the time.

I wonder what would happen if I kealed over one day? I think they would just step over me & carry on. :)

So, you are not alone.

I am supposed to start at 8am - 4pm but I get a lift with a teacher so I get there about 7:30am - 4:30pm. Though it is surprising what you get done in the extra hour.

I start 8:00 - 4:30 with an hour for dinner officially.

8:00 - 6:00 is often the norm with no dinner at work.

Then probably another 40 hours + outside of work at home after school and at weekends. As was said on a post above, I am not forced to work but through choice I enjoy what I do and if I didn't put the extra work in, I wouldn't get half the jobs done.

I try to make sure the team only work the hours they get paid. If they want to do more or do things from home I try to make sure they are recompensed.

If they want to be geeky at home I think self-study is best rather than working silly hours to do something that if it was planned properly could (and should) be done during the working day.

Then again I am paid to do a minimum of X hours ... and the rest is at the Head's discretion (within legal means)

I do tend to work 8 - 5 with a few small breaks during the day, but they are interspersed with meetings, duties and external activities. There are some days I will do 7 - 9, others I do 8.30 - 3.30.

My hours are 8.30 - 4.30

I dont normally come in any earlier but I normally stay till nearer 5

It just shows how anal teachers can be - particularly middled aged teachers or staff who've only ever worked in schools and have no experience of the 'outside world'. There's no sense of proportion, no ability to work within teams - whereas IT staff have either worked in the corporate sector where there are REAL bottom line pressures. You know the type that can affect whether a whole department gets made redundant. Or IT staff who have the experience of working in a small team in the school, where they very much rely on each other to get jobs done.

Teachers, heads, and some site management and admin staff should seriously get a clue.

As for me, I work 8:30-4:30 sometimes go earlier. Very rarely stay later than that - most tasks can be accomplished within the working day (although I post on here far too much and if I took fewer fag breaks I could be a hell of a lot more productive). Used to spend a lot of hours at home doing 'geeky stuff'. But now I'm married that kind of thing is less of a priority. But truth be told there aren't enough hours in the day to learn what I'd like to learn. Therefore for that reason, and the difficulty of staying on top of technology changes I intend to specialise in a particular area at some point in the future - could be a sharepoint guru, voip, storage consultant...not sure yet but whatever keeps me interested the most. Also depends on what the going rates are  .

Would stay self-study should be incorporated into your development plan as a few hours a week or month should be spent on this during working hours. That doesn't stop you from self-studying at home. But it means that you're not forced to self-study at home because the hours are there during the working week for these tasks (and outside of lunch breaks). If you earn under 20K you're seriously not earning enough to work through a lunch or to take too much of your work home with you. I should know, been there, done that, have the hair loss to prove it.

2 types of teachers.

teacher 1- has always worked in schools and therefore has no people communication skills. sometimes i think it should be them that does pshe and not the kids.

teacher 2 - has worked in industry and has life experience with comunicating with diffrent people. Who appreciate how hard things can be at times and know when to be patient and are always extremely greatfull.

I'm meant to start at 8.30 and finish at 4.30 with an hour dinner.

In reality I get in between 8 and half past, sometimes get an hour uninterrupted dinner but not often and leave at whatever time past 4 depending when I got in, so say I get in at 8.17 I leave at 4.17.

Oh, finish at 3 on a Friday :o)

Well put, they're often very easy to spot as well!

Our recently promoted head of IT is from industry, the (positive) difference is already noticeable. I'm very grateful for her support in helping plan the IT for the move to our new school next year

At the moment I'm on a 3 day, 24hr week. Along with 2 days garden leave from my other school until the 31st December when I'm made redundant.

My contacted hours are 08:30 to 16:15 with a 15 break and 1hour 15mins Dinner.

Sometimes I would come in earlier and finish earlier and visa versa.

I also gave up some of my dinner to support students in certain projects then one day I left I got back from dinner a bit late.

The head got me in his office and threatend me with a warning. From that I vowed never to work 1 minute more than I should.

I now arrive at work at 08:30 and leave exact on 16:15.

I think there needs to be a bit of give and take with the hours but the head at my school is a total arse so I refuse to do anything more than my contact says.

He leaves at the end of the year anyways so good bye
