JATSO Posted January 11, 2023 Posted January 11, 2023 The light in your first image is amazing!Shot at 24mm, F22 which gives those street lights the star effect for 6 sec mounted on a tripod.
Norphy Posted February 9, 2023 Posted February 9, 2023 Out for a walk - surprisingly clear night and even more surprisingly, a half decent picture of the night sky using a mobile phone camera! 3
enjay Posted February 10, 2023 Posted February 10, 2023 Out for a walk - surprisingly clear night and even more surprisingly, a half decent picture of the night sky using a mobile phone camera! The thumbnail is basically all black, so I thought this was a joke (or the astronomical equivalent of the excellent "Crap Wildlife Photography" on Facebook!), but it's a cool photo. I don't have a steady enough hand for night photography.
superatticman Posted February 10, 2023 Posted February 10, 2023 (edited) A few from a recent trip to Halifax with my partner. The game was postponed but a great time was had anyway. Edited February 10, 2023 by superatticman 1
DeGrimmy Posted February 10, 2023 Posted February 10, 2023 Not a photographer, but I happened to be leaving Liverpool Street station and looked up. 1
smurfomatic Posted February 18, 2023 Posted February 18, 2023 Took the new (to me) camera to the rugby today - see "annoying things" thread for the reasons behind getting a replacement. Got a few decent shots as I was playing around with getting it set up.
robk Posted February 18, 2023 Posted February 18, 2023 (edited) Had the pleasure of a trip up the Thames last week.. Taken hand held off the back of the boat. Edited February 18, 2023 by robk 2
simonw Posted February 20, 2023 Posted February 20, 2023 Taken on a visit to Southsea from inside a restaurant on Clarence pier (edited with Krita for interior light reflections) 2
Norphy Posted February 22, 2023 Posted February 22, 2023 Another clear night, so this time I’ve gone out with a tripod and a MagSafe mount for said tripod. Reasonably pleased with those 2
Norphy Posted February 23, 2023 Posted February 23, 2023 I don't know them well, but I'm pretty sure it's Orion in the first picture, and Ursa Minor in the second. Couldn't say for the third. 1
Ditto Posted February 23, 2023 Posted February 23, 2023 For your next shot, worth heading off to Ynys Enlli - https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-64731286
Norphy Posted February 23, 2023 Posted February 23, 2023 I'm only a few miles away from the Galloway International Dark Sky Park. I'm a bit too close to Dumfries to get the full effect but it's still an order of magnitude darker here than it is in London.

I'm a bit too close to Dumfries to get the full effect but it's still an order of magnitude darker here than it is in London. Dark skies are only part of it though, aren't they? Isn't there something to do with thickness of the atmosphere which is why the bigger/better telescopes are closer to the equator? I might be talking rubbish of course!

I have no idea, but the distance between New Galloway and Ynys Enlli is only about 160 miles so I wouldn't have thought that they're far enough away from each other to make a substantial difference for someone wandering around with a camera phone and a tripod
enjay Posted February 24, 2023 Posted February 24, 2023 Nothing like the calibre of other astronomy shots on here, and definitely not taken from a dark skies reserve, but I thought this was quite nice, partly because of colour fade but also because the middle one is Jupiter. 2
Norphy Posted February 27, 2023 Posted February 27, 2023 Supposedly the Northern Lights were visible from here last night and are going to be again tonight. I'm going to go out and see, if I get anything I'll post! 1
6Foot2 Posted February 27, 2023 Posted February 27, 2023 Supposedly the Northern Lights were visible from here last night and are going to be again tonight. I'm going to go out and see, if I get anything I'll post! Apparently, they were also visible in Wales and Cornwall and are likely to make a showing tonight (with a caveat, apart from the usual one for clear weather) If conditions allow, the best time to "see" them will be around midnight. "See" because at that time cameras will respond to the vista on show better than our eyes.
JOrdan01070 Posted February 27, 2023 Posted February 27, 2023 This was taken on Tuesday in Iceland with a pixel 4a and a 4 minute exposure. when looking at it with your normal eyes it was grey clouds but with a ting of green. 3
Norphy Posted February 28, 2023 Posted February 28, 2023 Whelp, last night was a bust. Completely clouded over. Gutted
6Foot2 Posted February 28, 2023 Posted February 28, 2023 Whelp, last night was a bust. Completely clouded over. Gutted I was up at three this morning, and saw nothing of note. To be fair, there was a little light pollution (enough for it to be bothersome) but I don't think it prevented me from seeing the phenomena for the first time.

To be fair, there was a little light pollution (enough for it to be bothersome) but I don't think it prevented me from seeing the phenomena for the first time. I was also up this morning hoping for a break in the clouds drove out to our local dark sky areas the clouds did disperse a bit but it was a no show, arrived home at 3am up at 7am. I have seen it a few times in the past my first and best was viewing, I was 18 some 45 years ago, I was stood in a 6ft trench with my mate in Canada waiting for the opposing force to attack at dawn. I think we just stood still and watched totally mesmerised by it all in the freezing early morning cold, ignoring the future onset of armoured tanks and infantry heading our direction from the other part of the exercise training area.
