enjay Posted May 16, 2018 Posted May 16, 2018 Cannons in the morning mist at Stratford Armouries Nice. I'd love to do more dawn photography. If only dawn was a few hours later in the day!
Mewdewgooboofoo Posted May 17, 2018 Posted May 17, 2018 Would anyone be able to recommend a good camera for around £200 or less. not bothered about it being able to video. just looking at high quality photos. I do quite a bit of photo editing but i never take the photos.
PyROm Posted May 17, 2018 Posted May 17, 2018 It depends what your after and if you have any existing kit. My main experience is with canon so I can only recommend canon kit, Im not saying this is better than other manufacturers, just I haven't used them recently. If you are after something small you can walk around with, but is very good focal range than I would recommend the sx720. The sx730 is out now and only seems to add an adjustable angle screen over the 720, this means that the sx720 new can be found on or just below £200. If portability isn't a problem then I would be looking at a second hand canon 50d with a mid range lens included. Dont forget that once you buy an SLR camera the major cost will be the lenses, and different manufacturers offer different ones, so if you have specific requirements or photography in mind, check that make has the lenses you will need in future. Also once you start buying lenses it tends to lock you into a brand.
Mewdewgooboofoo Posted May 17, 2018 Posted May 17, 2018 (edited) mostly ill be taking very up close photos. small flowers, portrait shots, insects ect. size isn't too much of a problem for me. i think my main priority is how much detail the camera can pick up on. e.g water droplets clearly visible on a leaf. HarryMonkey Posted May 17, 2018 Posted May 17, 2018 Just to throw a spanner into the works, the rose image was taken with an iPhone 4 whereas the blue flower was with my old Nikon D80 with a close-up lens screwed on to my 18-55mm kit lens. However, I think I would still go for a DSLR with some decent appropriate glassware.
enjay Posted May 17, 2018 Posted May 17, 2018 Nikon D80 with a close-up lens screwed on to my 18-55mm kit lens. Rather than cheap close-up lenses screwed onto decent lenses, have you tried lens extenders? They're metal rings which sit between the camera body and the lens, thus moving the lens further away from the camera and shifting its focal length. I took this photo of my wife's earring with one, not the best shot because I was just messing around free-hand not on a tripod, but you get the point.
enjay Posted May 17, 2018 Posted May 17, 2018 I haven't tried extension tubes ... Yet Theory says they're better, because the only lens you're using is a decent one, not a £20 piece of plastic over the top of your £200 bit of Carl Zeiss glass. Not sure I take the kind of photos where that makes much difference though, not that I can detect on a normal laptop screen anyway! 1
Seb1780 Posted May 17, 2018 Posted May 17, 2018 I have a set of Jessops extension tubes for Canon DSLR - free to good home as I've moved to Fuji. PM me.

bald_pig Posted May 18, 2018 Posted May 18, 2018 I went a different route and got myself some slightly vintage glass, Tamron adaptall lens can be picked up cheap, here's an 80-210 macro lens on ebay: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Tamron-adaptall-2-lens/163051725111?hash=item25f6a3e137:g:TdsAAOSwFp9aIUu9 then you get an adapter for your brand of camera! I've built a little collection now, I have a 70-210 macro, 80-300, 18-70 and a 2x tele.
Andrew_C Posted May 18, 2018 Posted May 18, 2018 Is this an adaptor to put old SLR lenses onto modern DSLR? Didn't know that was a thing... Interesting as I have a few lenses, and am looking at a new camera.
bald_pig Posted May 18, 2018 Posted May 18, 2018 Is this an adaptor to put old SLR lenses onto modern DSLR? Didn't know that was a thing... Interesting as I have a few lenses, and am looking at a new camera. This was an entire lens system that Tamron made with a generic mount, and a series of adaptors for all the major camera companies, plus some new aftermarket ones for modern lenses. You can get adaptors to go from one camera brand to another, they typically alter the lens slightly as it's being held further from the sensor than intended (not an issue with adaptall as it's designed with this in mind)
mavhc Posted May 21, 2018 Posted May 21, 2018 I got a £2 thing to put the lens on backwards, worked quite well, although same with most tubes, you lose any automatic control, so works better with an old completely manual lens

Everything else still works though.

Interesting as I have a few lenses, and am looking at a new camera.Depending on the quality/number of lenses you have, there are some high quality options that pass through all of the controls. (Look for metabones) Also if you're talking film SLR and moving to something that's not a full frame DSLR system, you'll get a longer effective focal length. Eg a micro 4:3 system will double the focal length, so that nice little 50mm f1.4 you've got tucked away becomes a lovely little portrait lens [emoji846]
arwen Posted May 22, 2018 Posted May 22, 2018 Extension tubes can be good fun. I got a cheap set from Amazon for my micro 4 3rd and had fun experimenting with them. However I do most of my shooting handheld, so they end up being too much of a flaff for me. This photo however was shot using one, handheld. 3
