arwen Posted August 17, 2016 Posted August 17, 2016 I really like that first Balloon one Kenny. Love seeing all the different colours :-) I was at the BTCC in Knockhill at the weekend (rather unexpectedly!) Took my camera along to try shooting quick cars for the first time. Rather pleased with the results, still got plenty of learning to do though :-) 1

If you were to lower your shutter speed a bit you could capture a bit more movement in the foreground/background. Pop your camera on 'S' mode and then set it to somewhere between 1/100th - 1/200th of a second. The longer the shutter, the harder it is to get a good picture BUT the better panning/movement effect. Here's my picture from last nights dog walk! The moon over Elmdon park by Alex Matravers, on Flickr and this one from Mondays absolutely cracking sunset: Birmingham skyline! Longer exposures do enhance the look of speed but its harder to get a sharp image. Its also sometimes worth killing auto focus and setting it manually generally i use sports mode or a semi auto auto where i set the shutter speed and let the camera do the aperture as it sees fit (though im no expert) here one from knockhill 3 years ago (excuse the quality its from my facebook page cba to get the original from the car its a long walk lol) 1

Shutter priority works best for me unless it's a really clear day in which case I know my exposure isn't likely to change much so I go full manual. Another tip is to use autofocus to get the position on the track you wish to take the picture, and then pop it into manual. Then you know that that area will be in focus. Just be sure not to knock your focus ring!! Here's a not particular interesting photo but one of my best at a stupid low shutter, this was at 1/50th: Fast Car Festival 2016 by Alex Matravers, on Flickr

LiamHaith Posted August 18, 2016 Posted August 18, 2016 As someone who's completely in the unknown regarding photography, where would be a good (but relatively cheap) starting camera? I have no idea what anything means when it comes to the specs of a camera.
mavhc Posted August 18, 2016 Posted August 18, 2016 There's this thread: http://www.edugeek.net/forums/general-chat/172125-recommend-me-camera.html How much do you want to spend, what do you want to photograph? Basically your choice is between a camera that's small, an ultrazoom bridge camera, an EVIL (electronic viewfinder, interchangeable lens), or a DSLR. With EVIL/DSLR you're buying into an ecosystem, so the cost of lenses is more of an issue.

Or do you want to start photography as a hobby? That will have a huge impact on the type of camera you'll want etc.
arwen Posted August 18, 2016 Posted August 18, 2016 Cheers for the tips guys. We now have season passes for knockhill so will more than likely be back, for cars and bikes! I tried a few different modes on the camera while I was there, found manually focusing on the slow corner and just timing it right got nice results. For the quicker corners and coming into the straight I found leaving auto focus on and panning with the cars was good once I got the timing right. Didn't play around with the shutter speed too drastically but will be next time. As well as taking the tripod along. Arms were sore within a few hours As for beginner cameras. If you are ok spending more money than a very good compact. I cannot rate my little Panasonic GX7 highly enough. If you take a look at my flickr you'll see I tend to take pictures of all sorts of thing (aside from people...) It has coped very well I think, is very easy to use and is small and light enough to carry around all the time. Which as someone learning photography as a hobby is a great advantage. Always having your camera with you lets you experiment and learn more with it in my opinion.
LiamHaith Posted August 18, 2016 Posted August 18, 2016 It'll be nothing special, more so just wanting to occasionally be able to go out and take pictures of things that take my fancy. A hobby more than a Holiday Photography kind of deal. As for spend, it depends what would get me a good quality and serve good use for the time being.

I'd definitely be looking at either a good compact or a good bridge camera. They'll both give good image quality, decent portable and good range etc. Bridge cameras will be a little big but will offer a great zoom range: 10 best bridge cameras 2016 | TechRadar Compacts offer greater portability 10 best compact cameras 2016 | TechRadar
MrMat Posted August 18, 2016 Posted August 18, 2016 Oh yeah, and new photo from last night! Been trying to go out most nights but already starting to run out of ideas/locations. This is the best i could come up with: Choo choo! by Alex Matravers, on Flickr 1

MrMat Posted August 23, 2016 Posted August 23, 2016 (edited) I've been busy with the Camera again this weekend Went out taking some more Car pics. Both are long exposure shots (30 seconds) and light painted with a big torch. This is actually a composite. I lit the background better in a different shot (flash - ahhha) so composted into this shot. Suzuki swift (again) by Alex Matravers, on Flickr This one is one shot with very minimal editing. Literally bit of extra contract, saturation etc and that's it. My MX5 by Alex Matravers, on Flickr Annnnnd lastly, i was invited to Tribfest on Sunday to take photos of one of the acts (Just Jessie - Jessie J Tribute) which was my first time doing that sort of thing. It was alot of fun! I did however take waaaay too many shots so it's taking an age to go through them all but i post a few goodies when they're done. Edited August 23, 2016 by MrMat 3

webman Posted August 23, 2016 Posted August 23, 2016 I recently had a tour of Newcastle Civic Centre. I only had a Panasonic GF1 micro four thirds camera with me, no tripod, and was slightly rushed in places... but managed to get a few snaps of some interesting areas usually out of bounds to the public, including the top of the Carillon tower. View from the top of the tower. Click for full album.

MrMat Posted August 26, 2016 Posted August 26, 2016 Here we go, here's a tiny snip of those band shots i did over the weekend I'm quiet pleased with them and the band seemed to like them. Admittedly, it was the easiest conditions imaginable. Loads of light, plenty of room in front of the stage (managed to talk my way into the media pit which was ace!) etc etc. All shot on my Sony A7 with 70-200mm F4. MrKJLS Posted August 27, 2016 Posted August 27, 2016 Today, we went to Centre of Computing History in Cambridge. It's a good place to go as you are allowed to go and use the computer what are on display which is pretty cool.
