Which version? The EU one with an orchestral score or the US one with the Tangerine Dream score? The former is better, but I might feel that way as it's the first version I saw (and loved)?

The orchestral one. Clearly a very well made movie and I could appreciate the artistry and it shows its had a pretty big budget, but it just didn't resonate with me. I think I'm just not in to elves, goblins, unicorns and the like. Similar I guess to my feelings to Lord of the Rings - I enjoyed it, but it didn't have the impact om me as it clearly has to so many others. I guess that's why I'd align to @witch views rather than @mavhc based on recent earlier discussion in this thread!

Greenland with Gerard Butler and Morena Baccarin (Amazon Prime). If I tell you that it's Gerard Butler running round trying to save his family from an impending meteorite, you'll immediately get an idea of what this film is that is, astonishingly, entirely wrong (certainly I did). It's actually a fraught, tense disaster movie without ridiculous feats of superhuman ridiculousness, and is pretty stressful to watch at certain points because stuff goes really wrong and you're sat there thinking how in the hell you'd handle it. Surprisingly good movie, not at all the brainless popcorn flick you'd expect.

It's far more interesting having us see the world in different ways. I expect if we were all looking at the same thing, we'd all perceive it slightly differently. For example, if I saw a multi-coloured Llama, some would see a Zebra - no points for guessing who I'm thinking of for having 'black and white' view of the world .

"Avatar reclaims title as highest-grossing film". Having seen this on BBC website this morning, I had to check my Amazon Prime account this morning as we watched it last night. It was indeed an excellent film. Fortunately the headline is purely a coincidence!

I've always felt Avatar was overrated, though this may be partially due to my difficulty seeing 3D. However, it's a masterpiece compared to:

 

Time Traveller (Amazon Prime)

 

aka The Lovers aka Singularity aka La Prophétie de l'anneau (The Prophecy of the Ring)

 

 

A team of marine archaeologists (though one later seems to be a lecturer/expert in Quantum Physics) in the future, from the tech, discover a wreck on the seabed with a ring that we also see in another bookend set in what could be the time of the main story, or maybe the far past/future, about a prophecy concerning the ring. When trouble strikes, Jay (Josh Hartnett) ends up comatose and we get the main story, set towards the end of the 18th Century, about a Scottish soldier (also Hartnett) falling in love with an Indian warrior princess.

 

The main story is beautifully shot and would've made a satisfying movie on its own, though the ending would need changing, but the "prophecy" bookend isn't tied into it well enough and the SF bookend makes no sense. We're left with a mishmash of The Far Pavilions (Brit/Indian romance), Outlander (possible time travel with a Jamie and Claire - here James/Clara, though they're not "the lovers"), Cloud Atlas (nested stories with recurring actors) and The Fountain (love spanning far-flung time periods). It seems there were financial difficulties during the shoot but it's hard to see how, short of a Snyder-length cut, this could've made sense. Hard to believe this is from the guy who directed The Mission and The Killing Fields.

 

Only recommended if you want to see if you can spot something I missed (or dropped off in) that makes sense of the movie or, if you like the look of the Indian stuff, fast-forward to it and fade out when Tulaja heads into the dark forest to find James and imagine your own ending.

Belated sequel has Zamunda under threat from Nexdoria as Prince Akeem has "merely" fathered three girls and has no male heir. A handy bit of retconning reveals a hitherto unknown male heir in Queens, who must be trained to rule Zamunda so that he can marry the ruler of Nextdoria's daughter and unite the kingdoms.

 

Yep, you've worked out the ending already, but it's a tolerably entertaining film. The amount of music and dancing in it is barely a step away from a musical comedy, rather than just a comedy; if the music is to your taste this may be an added selling point. If you're a huge fan of the original you probably won't be impressed, but if you remember it as being a funny film but little else you may.

 

Wesley Snipes totally steals the show as the evil ruler of Nexdoria and is almost watching the film for.
