If you edit your profile on a computer, there's an option called "Autoplay previews whilst browsing on all devices". I don't think you can change it in-app, it has to be done in a browser. Or it certainly did, anyway. 1

After a family betrayal, addict/alcoholic Ava (Jessica Chastain) joins the army, mainly cleans her act up and is eventually trained up as a super assassin for a shadowy company. Now she is beginning to question whether her targets are actually as evil as she is being told, which doesn't sit too well with her handlers... OK action thriller that is burdened with too many subplots in an effort to inject some unneeded "realism" into the proceedings. I didn't regret watching it, but neither would I say "everyone needs to see this". Mind you, it does get extra points for angering the incel/red pill/MRA crowd who bleat that Ava couldn't be tough enough to fight men the way she does, though I suspect that Jessica Chastain (not even Ava) could probably take out most of them after her movie fight training.
LeMarchand Posted December 13, 2020 Author Posted December 13, 2020 Dolittle (Sky Movies) Doctor Dolittle is called out of self-imposed retirement to save Queen Vic, but the cure will involve a voyage to the island where his wife died. Bit of a "meh" film. Not truly awful, but nowhere near as fun as it could've been. Robert Downey Jr's Welsh accent is a bit of a bizarre choice but not too bad (IANAWelshman). I do wonder if the infamous reshoots changed the ending, as we were all expecting something else to happen. Glad we didn't go to the cinema for this!

Darkly comic, tragic, surreal... and utterly brilliant! 1

Duranis Posted December 15, 2020 Posted December 15, 2020 Me and the Mr watched Tenent the other night. Multiple people had hyped it up to me as an amazing film that I just had to watch. It's not a terrible concept but IMO its a one and a half hour film stretched out for two and a half hours. Just felt like it took a lot of time to not really go anywhere. 1

Given it's age, it's survived the test of time and the graphics mostly stand up pretty well. I guess we will have to consider the sequels? Any tips on duds or ones to watch?

Maybe it's just us, we did watch it pretty late at night and was a bit tired anyway. I really enjoyed both Interstellar and Dunkirk so was expecting to enjoy it a lot more. Just felt to me you could have cut half of it and had the same story.

So, same question, but let's replace "sequel" with "follow up movies in the same style as the original" - of course I'm assume the film I referred to was original, albeit based on a book.

Elder son has played the Steam game and seemed to enjoy that . He seemed to rack up a stack of money and build his enterprise very quickly. He seems to do this was most simulation games of this sort - he might be suited to financial investment! His biggest interest is rockets and space travel and he'd love to work for SpaceX.

Thought it was good, but massively overhyped. Definitely had its moments though, and the acting was top notch. 1

LeMarchand Posted December 17, 2020 Author Posted December 17, 2020 Wonder Woman 1984 (That place you might have forgotten: the cine-something) Entertaining sequel, but I think it's been over-hyped; maybe because it's the first "big" film on HBO Max and/or for months elsewhere. The 80's setting is only really relevant in the mall and the Steve Trevor's outfit sequences shown in the trailer - there's even hardly any 80's music - and the two supervillains aren't evil enough. Pedro Pascal's Max Lord is a bit of a rotter before he goes OTT, but up until he launches his not exactly credible plan he still displays a bit of a moral compass and Kristen Wiig's character just seems to lose her way after starting out as a the sort of person who regularly buys food for a homeless guy in the park. I'm also a bit ambivalent about whether Steve Trevor should have returned, though it does add some heft to the story. The above sounds kinda negative, but there is plenty to enjoy. It's got a big heart and the climactic scene is different to the standard CGI dust-up and works really well. The bit that put a goofy grin on both my wife's face and mine was a cameo a short way into the end credits, though. (Nothing right at the end). As for the cinema experience: I normally use Meerkat Movies. Didn't last night as they were only charging £3.50 a seat, so I figured they needed the "full" price! Would've bought food, which we don't normally, but not much on offer. Screen was busier than I expected (been fewer people for some showings pre-plague) but not exactly at Covid Capacity. Their booking algorithm needs adapting; two seats either SIDE get blocked out, but I would've thought that the worst place would be in front of someone. Luckily the place my wife and I sit was clear all around. (We think centre front - there's still no need to "look up" - is great).
LeMarchand Posted December 20, 2020 Author Posted December 20, 2020 A Christmas Gift From Bob (Amazon Prime, but also on most PPV outlets as well as on disc and in cinemas) Sorta sequel to "Streetcat Named" starts off with James Bowen at an Xmas party thrown by his publisher. On the way home, he helps a homeless young man and tells him about the year he learned the meaning of Christmas thanks to Bob. One of the few films to have their release brought forward despite the pandemic, this feels like a quickly rushed-out cash-grab sequel even though the original film was 2016. The timeline and other aspects make little sense, so maybe it's best to think of this as a fable rather than a true story, and Luke Treadaway seems to have given up trying to disguise his accent. That said, it does have its heartwarming scenes. If you enjoyed the first, have access to Prime, and are looking for something to watch then check it out. Otherwise wait for a free showing if you really want to see it. Sad note: Bob, who plays himself, passed away over the summer .
