phreak Posted July 30, 2019 Posted July 30, 2019 John Wick 3 I enjoyed this latest instalment of the John Wick series a lot. Though (and won't give too much away to avoid spoilers) at times it seems like he can't make up his mind as to what he wants to do. But it was pretty fast paced with the action and the story, such as it was, was good. Plus it nicely sets it up for future movies/spin offs. The only thing I would say is that it wasn't as good (IMO) as the first one.

LeMarchand Posted August 4, 2019 Author Posted August 4, 2019 The ladies of the house are visiting a sick rel for the weekend, so I've watched a couple of movies that they wouldn't enjoy. Oldboy (2013) A-hole business man is kidnapped and finds himself in a hotel room/prison. Left alone with only the TV he learns that his wife was raped and murdered and his daughter is in foster care. He decides to get his s**t together and transforms himself into a lean, mean killing machine and vows vengeance. 20 years later, just as he is about to escape, he learns that his daughter may be prepared to reconcile but is gassed... to wake up in a field with some money and a phone with a strange set of instructions. I've not seen the Korean original, which is allegedly much better (though I always suspect there is a good deal of snobbery involved in such calls). A bit of research suggests that it is fairly similar, though the villain's motivation is possibly more messed up in the Hollywood version while the ending is considerably less so. Anyway, it was hard to root for the protagonist, who went from alcoholic a-hole to powered-up a-hole vengeance machine (and was always a bad 'un, to judge from the flashbacks) and the antagonist's master plan was way too complex to believe. Still, if you want to see Mantis from GotG as a near-invincible henchwoman and Thanos and Scarlet Witch getting it on, this is the film for you. It (Chapter One) Not a huge fan of Stephen King, and not read the book - though I have seen the TV series version, which I seem to remember was OK. Not sure I was in the mood for this, as I found it kinda dull with a couple of really poor edits. I also can't remember kids quite so constantly dropping the F Bomb in the 80s. On the plus side, they skipped the scene from the book that has caused a lot of controversy (and rightly so) and the young cast were good; but I can't say I'm gagging for the sequel.
mavhc Posted August 5, 2019 Posted August 5, 2019 Has anyone else noticed that Netflix can't make good trailers? They're overly long, and often give away far too much of the plot... They probably make 10 trailers and A/B test them over their millions of users to find out which make you watch more.

Gaga and Cooper great in the lead roles and some great work to collect the shots from all of those different festivals. What starts as a heartwarming story about music and not having a chance in a heartless business, quickly becomes a love story before turning into a lesson on the perils of addiction. Very good, if a little depressing!

Very low key and not without its moments, but a bit dull and one of those "Is that it?" endings.

LeMarchand Posted August 20, 2019 Author Posted August 20, 2019 Johnny English Strikes Again When all of M.I.17's agents are compromised in a hack, Johnny Engish is called back into service and must save the country from an evil tech genius (and a PM who clearly hasn't heard of GDPR). Predictable and one of those films that makes you feel kinda ashamed when you laugh. That said, I've seen a lot worse.
phreak Posted August 20, 2019 Posted August 20, 2019 Godzilla: King of the Monsters Not the worst monster/action movie I have ever watched, but by no means the best one either. I can see where they tried to perhaps make it a bit more interesting however some of the plot was predictable and the characters actions made no sense. But all in all worth a watch if you like watching bit epic monster battles.
LeMarchand Posted August 27, 2019 Author Posted August 27, 2019 Blinded by the Light Charming film about a Pakistani boy growing up in the 80s who is introduced to the music of The Boss and finds his life changed. Based on a true story, but obviously fairly large liberties have been taken to make it more cinematic. Maybe not a "rush out to the cinema and see it" one, but certainly worth catching up with at some point, even if you're not a huge fan of Springsteen.

Tolerable action/thriller but not one to rush to watch. The guy who plays Hazel in Umbrella Academy has a supporting role, and looks way younger in this.

It's more of a film about a guy with Father issues, set in space than a Sci-Fi film. For the most part I liked it, though it really did drag in places.

I have a Cineworld Unlimited card, so at least I didn't pay for a full price ticket. I don't regret seeing it, but I was just dissapointed.

Fantastic film, I see why it got the amount of praise that it did. Though I kinda feel that a certain, non-human, non-solid, not-really-a-character character could have cut out half the movie (or even done all of the work itself), but I guess that would've cut out all the self/ancestral discovery stuff and made the whole thing just a tiny bit less wholesome.

And so many inconsistencies...eg how would a spaceship designed to take off and land on Mars get back to Earth? Sci-Fi fans are pretty savvy about the science of it all and it is very sloppy to have these sorts of inconsistencies. Especially when at other points they bothered to have no sound in space which most films usually ignore
LeMarchand Posted October 6, 2019 Author Posted October 6, 2019 Agatha and the Truth of Murder A fictional account of what happened during author Agatha Christie's famous 11 day disappearance. In this case it turns out that she was helping solve a murder by using techniques from one of her books, such as gathering all the suspects at a deserted country house, but then murder strikes again. Not bad as a bit of light entertainment, but not a classic and the denouement is particularly unbelievable.
CHiLL Posted October 7, 2019 Posted October 7, 2019 Hustlers - 8/10 The trailer had initially put me off seeing it as it didn't look like my sort of thing. But then I heard such good reviews about it, I decided to go see it. It was a good film, with some very good performances. Other films I've seen recently, but forgot to post about: The Farewell - 8/10 A nice film - enjoyed it more than I thought I would. Thought it dragged a little at times, but it was a good story and uite humorous in places. It tackled the culter of not telling a family member that they're terminally ill, to save them from the worry/stress. Downton Abbey 7/10 A nice film, nothing significant happens, though it's nice to be back in that world. IT Chapter Two - 7/10 An OK film, carrying on well from the first film. Good cast, god likeness to the original younger cast. I know these films are meant to be a litle humerous but I tend to find them a bit more on the silly side, rather than horror/trhillery. 1
