That's about where the similarities between this and "Mortal Engines" end, though. "Wonder" will be way too sickly sweet for many people, but it's one of those films that is quite enjoyable if you're in the right mood. I was expecting complaints from the rest of the family (it was my suggestion), but it seems everyone enjoyed it too.

LeMarchand Posted December 19, 2018 Author Posted December 19, 2018 Aquaman Jason Momoa stars as the near-invulnerable superhero who can swim really fast, punch really hard and talk to sea creatures but who seems to have a problem keeping his shirt on. (Calm down, ladies!). This isn't as much of a mess as the trailers make it look, but is way too long and contains way too many fight scenes. Momoa is good in the starring role and the film is a often lot of fun. Unfortunately the climax is the de rigueur CGI battle, a whole subplot is only there to set up a sequel and provide yet more fight sequences (admittedly, these are generally well shot) and whoever did the digital de-ageing on Willem Dafoe has never seen a picture of the actor when he was young (he's never looked that smooth-faced). It's probably the second-best DCEU movie after Wonder Woman, but I wouldn't recommend rushing to see it (hardly anyone else in our town bothered last night - I think Mortal Engines was busier!). Oh, there's a mid-credits sequel bait scene that you will not be surprised by.
LeMarchand Posted December 29, 2018 Author Posted December 29, 2018 The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society Just after WW2 a young lady writer heads to Guernsey, determined to write a "proper" book and intrigued by letters she has received from a member of the eponymous society. Surprisingly decent drama/romance that (unlike the similar "Their Finest") doesn't veer off in tone later on. Main disappointment was that apparently very little of what you see on screen is actually Guernsey (it's mainly Devon). Worth a look if you like this sort of thing.

Also watched last night - Ready Player One Weak story, enjoyable film and probably distracting by the 6,000,000 pop culture/video game references

Has some very funny bits, but not enough of them; probably OK as a post-pub film. While I did quite enjoy it, I'm glad we didn't pay to see this one at the cinema.

There were lots of references back to the original film for the eagle eyed.... That British Robin in Mary Poppins' hat band as opposed to the much complained about American Robin that feathered its nest for Julie Andrews... Jack, the Bert successor, asking Meryl Streep what accent exactly she was using...

LeMarchand Posted January 3, 2019 Author Posted January 3, 2019 (edited) Mary Poppins Returns I'm not a huge fan of the original, and this didn't wow me. Emily Blunt is great and Emily Mortimer does her best in a thankless role... otherwise, meh. It's closer to a remake with forgettable songs than a sequel (think Force Awakens/New Hope). I was confused by how Michael and Jane were supporting themselves as Jane's "job" seemed to be charitable/union work which didn't seem paid and Michael didn't bother to go to work until mid week. More confusingly, there's a "countdown" to when something bad will happen (initially 5PM Friday, later extended to midnight) and the film bimbles until Wednesday and then suddenly jumps to close to the countdown. I thought that the cinema had skipped a reel for a while! In the interest of fairness, the chatter in the cinema on exit suggested that the film was generally well-liked (even the songs). phreak Posted January 3, 2019 Posted January 3, 2019 Watched Venom last night and while it the fight scenes and computer animation was good I must say that it strayed too far from anything resembling the original comic storyline for my liking. I mean the character is one of Spiderman's arch enemies for goodness sake. Just feels like a money grab to try turn, admittedly one of the better villains, into it's own standalone movie series/merch. Ok, I get that perhaps the original storyline of Battleworld may be a bit of a big story to try squeeze into 1 movie but they just seem to have gone, ok love the idea of venom.. Ok we will take the crashing spaceship idea from the Spiderman animated series, but the rest of it to do with Spiderman... naaah /rant

The abuse of architecture in Brazil is better, ceilings are cut, more windows are jumped through, there's an entire character who rewires the buildings to create chaos, and he's Robert DeNiro. And it's about the true meaning of Christmas, rampant consumerism distracting you from a dystopia. And it has more Christmas decorations

Some really memorable bits that I've seen before as clips, but it was so good to put them into perspective of the whole thing. It probably lacked the 'wow' factor that it had at the time, what with special effects having evolved so much, but it was still fantastic. Terminator 2 - another absolutely wonderful film. Some of the best car/motorbike/lorry/helicopter chases I've ever seen, with such a contrast between the two terminators.

Must have watched it 30 times. Once watched it twice in four days (weird TV scheduling where both ITV and C5 showed it). James Cameron always got the best from Arnie, True Lies is also a classic.
