The Nice Guys

 

Shane Black writes and directs this Seventies-set buddy movie starring Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe. The lunchtime drinks were only partly to blame for my nodding off at one stage, the rest was down to what felt like an overly complicated plot. Black's writing didn't seem as sharp as normal, either. A bit disappointing, but not without merit.

Deadpool 2 on Friday night. Fantastic film. Not quite as funny as the first although a lot of absolutely laugh out loud moments, WTF moments and better overall action sequences. Domino is awesome.

Will never be able to watch Basic Instinct without imagining the unimaginable ever again.

Finally got to see Love, Simon last night and awww what a lovely film i need it on home release so I can watch it again and again. A lovely modern story about a traditional issue for people all over the world and how the modern day has hit it harder

Deadpool 2 last night.

 

Absolutely brilliant - everything I wanted it to be, right from the bond-esque opening credits, through the references "Zip it, Thanos", to the end credits "Fixin' the timeline, guys".

I can't find it now, but I did see a review complaining that the film was too white/middle class and "only" dealt with Simon's particular struggles! Guess that's why it was called "Love, Simon" and not "Love, Simon and a bunch of other people who the author of that review feels are under-represented"...

In a future where everyone has eye/memory implants recording and enhancing everything they see and where colour appears to have faded from the world , crimes can be solved by simply accessing memories. But someone has found a way to hack the data storage...

 

An intriguing idea in a yawnsome movie. Although it wasn't meant to be funny, I did laugh at the scene where the hero tells his superiors that he'll need a fake ID as a millionaire, a flash apartment and a ton of cash. He'll then life the life of a playboy for a month or so before he hires a high class call-girl which will be his bait for the hackers (to excise from his memory). It's a dirty job, but someone's gotta do it...

Solo quite enjoyed. Can't understand slating it for the ratings.. It's obviously meant to be a minor movie with no advertising budget.

 

Deadpool 2 some old people behind us laughing at all the in jokes. Some other morons laughing way too loudly at the swearing. Some mildly funny bits. Hate the bits where dp steps out of the movie "I hope they got that in slow mo". It's half a movie about making a movie. Talk about up its own ass.

Went and saw Solo on Sunday, in 3D with Dolby Atmos (so, gimmicky gimmick...). Was pretty good. Had a nice few links to the other movies. Worth the £15 ticket? Nah. Should've been a Netflix or Prime release.

Most definitely a "minor" Star Wars film. Too long, but had its moments. Alden Whathisface was fairly convincing as a young Harrison Ford, though kept tipping over into "Young Jack Black". Emelia Clark, whilst unlikely to be winning any acting awards soon, was much better than her GoT performance suggests. Whoever made the decision to make the film so murky (in the lighting/cinematography sense) needs feeding to the nearest Sarlacc, though.

 

I'd advise waiting for home release rather than trekking out to the pictures if this is one your "to watch" list. Otherwise give it a miss.

I didn't experience any murkiness, I have to say. Thought it was quite a bright movie! What version did you see (3D or whatever?)

Our local cinema rarely bothers with 3D these days (and I'm not a fan) so "flat". I did wonder if it was the projection, but the bits at the processing plant/desert world looked fine and other films don't look so dingy there.

The Dark Tower

 

I quite enjoyed this, though the ending lacked build-up. However, I'm not a huge fan of Stephen King and haven't read the books. I suspect my opinion would be different if I was. Not one to rush out to see, but an OK time filler.

Bridge On The River Kwai -- bit outdated these days, but the central madness came through
