Wasn't overly keen when the ladies in the house suggested this adaptation of a Maeve Binchy story, but Hayley Atwell and Orla Brady swayed me.

 

Very predictable but quite sweet story of a prodigal sister who has to care for the "bad 'uns" in her more responsible older sister's care home over Christmas. It's a bit slow, but if you like the look of the trailer it's worth a look. If the trailer's not you're thing, give it a wide berth.

 

P.S. Who knew Maeve Binchy had such a laissez faire attitude to wacky baccy?

Saw the new Ghostbusters at the weekend.

 

The Mrs & I both thought it was excellent. Couldn't really ask for more from a remake, plenty of easter eggs & cameos for the old timers and plenty to get a new generation on board.

 

Looking forwards to the next one.

Star Trek: Beyond

 

Generally enjoyable, though I'm puzzled as to how Simon Pegg was surprised by how action-packed the first trailer was - they'd have had to shoot a lot of extra footage for it to have originally been more cerebral! Most of the cast get their moment to shine and, despite George Takei's worries, I thought the "Sulu" revelation was really well handled.

 

I do feel that this movie should have been the one called "into darkness" - it was really hard to see what was going on at times. Quite odd, as one of the scenes in the trailer happened in bright light, but in the film it was almost in full darkness. Plus my usual complaint about the camera being too close in the fight scenes, making it hard to tell what was going on.

Watched Sherlock Holmes at the weekend (the 2009 guy ritchie one).

 

It was alright but we both agreed that it was about 30-40 minutes too long. We'll watch the sequel at some point to see if it's any better.

 

The one thought that I kept returning to whilst watching it was that I think Ian McShane would have played that Sherlock better than RDJ.

GR wouldn't have been my first choice for director of a Sherlock Holmes film but he didn't do too badly to be honest. Probably give the whole thng 6.5/10

Not a movie, but just binged Stranger Things on Netflix and I am bereft without it now. Proper 80s nostalgia and a love letter to Stephen Spielberg and Stephen King, a mix of ET and Stand By Me and It and all sorts of other 80s references. Very, very enjoyable.

On Saturday I watched BFG (quite good, compositing wasn't perfect though), Star Trek Beyond (very silly science, mildly interesting fiction), Finding Dory (good, reminded me of Toy Story plots, it's no Frozen though), Ghostbusters (funny, almost as good at the original, which wasn't amazing either), and M (amazing for 1931, most of it still stands up today, prefer Metropolis though)

I finally watched the recent superman batman film last night. The three hour supercut too.

 

Thought it was really rather good.

 

Essentially a take on The Dark Knight returns and Superman: Doomsday all rolled into a single film.

Plenty of Easter eggs spot, impressive action sequences. And I actually think the Affleck makes a really good Bruce Wayne/Batman.

OK, Mme LeMarchand and I had both had a busy weekend, but she actually fell asleep during this and I struggled to stay awake. I just didn't care what happened to Bourne (and, seemingly, he wasn't overly fussed either). It's not truly awful, but probably the worst film I've seen at the cinema in a very long time. I must say that the trailer didn't exactly sell me, but Mme LeMarchand was keen - wish we'd had an early night!

Pretty much agree with that. The characters were zero-dimensional. It had lots of action, if that's your bag.

 

 

I recently caught "The Fundamentals of Caring" on Netflix and thoroughly enjoyed it. Lots of very black humour. I didn't think I'd like it, but I loved it.

Watched Sicario last night on Netflix. Outstanding. The plot draws in an FBI officer to lend legitimacy to illegal cross-border government activities. She soon finds herself out of her depth in a world where nothing is what it seems.

The trailer makes it look like like just another dumb action move, but it's not. Well worth a watch.

Don't know if I wasn't in the right mood (the other two in the house gave up soon after "Teen Spirit" was sung) but could not get into this. It looked ravishing, but didn't involve me. Not sure why Rooney Mara's Tiger Lily got so much stick as the "Native American" tribe had been Black- Oriental- Asian- and Aborigine-washed as well as the much-criticised white-wash.Glad I didn't got to the cinema for this one!

Pete's Dragon

 

Absolutely magical. Reminded me a lot of E.T.. Won't be for everyone, but if you're the sort of person who is happy watching films that aren't for grown ups, you should like it. That said, I suspect little uns might both get itchy feet (it has a few slow places) and possibly traumatised by some of the goings on. (Not that the latter is anything out of bounds in a PG).

 

I do wonder about the market for this (it's not doing well). It's too adult to truly appeal to kids: the "villain" isn't really bad, just a poor judge of what is right and some of the themes will go right over their heads. On the other hand, most adults are unlikely to flock to the cinema to see a "kid's film" about a cuddly dragon. Fans of the original (apparently there are some) will also be disappointed as it just takes the name and central conceit. It's not going to win any awards for originality, either. It's got a DVD sale from me, though.

 

For a contrasting opinion: Mme LeMarchand hated it. She did agree that the ending was perfect and that it was nice that the leading lady (Bryce Dallas Howard) was allowed to have curves rather that be a stick insect, but she thought it was cruel and way too dark in places for kids. Strangely, despite such delicate sensibilities, she didn't seem to suffer from the dust problems that caused my vision to blur at regular intervals through the film .
