Just passed 70-284 today which means (with the other 6), I'm a Windows 2003 MCSE. I'm looking forward to a nice badge and piece of paper signed by Mr Gates.

 

Congratulations; I recognise that's quite some achievement.

 

I'm signed up Distance Learning for an MCSA with E-Careers.Co.UK. and at the ripe young age of 55 I'm finding the little grey cells are not remembering a lot. So, come any of the exams boy am I going to struggle :!:

Staff at my school think I'm Steve's brother Crap. They keep giving me all his work :?

I was just looking an my Microsoft Transcript and the 5 th and last Microsoft exam I took was on Jun 21, 2003. Maybe now 4 years have passed I can afford that upgrade :p .

Just in time to start work on that upgrade to MCSE 2008 ;)

 

Which optional bits (besides Exchange) did you do?

You can start already, there is Server 2008 books out there already

The irony that I have a qualification in an outdated client OS (XP), an outdated messaging system (Exchange 2003) and a soon to be replaced server OS (2003) is not lost on me. I will have to consider an upgrade when the courses and exams become widely available, but as my job has changed from a technical one to a more managerial one, it may be harder to get my employer to pay for it!

 

It took me just over a year from starting to study (online via Thompson NetG - now Skillsoft, who I have to say that I cannot recommend) to taking the last exam.

 

I know that there are those who place little value on the MS certifications (especially when obtained via a boot camp or as compared to experience) and I can certainly understand that POV as I have come across people with MCSEs who I would not trust to defrag my hard disk. Having said that, I learned quite a lot all in all. When your knowledge is gained by doing, it goes without saying that your knowledge will not really extend beyond what you actually do. Studying for the MS exams has filled in quite a few gaps here and there.

My experience was the same as yours. I Spent over a year doing my exams and it filled in gaps here and there. I dont regret doing them. As for being outdated, I was the same as you I just finished them just as 2003 server came out :lol:

So how did you get into the IT lark then? Were you the only person in the office who didn't runway (like at the premier of the Lumier Brothers train film) when the BBC Micro beeped after POSTing :)

My experience was the same as yours.

 

And mine sounds a bit the same (except having done NT since version 3.1 I did the exams relatively quickly). Decided a single demonstration of jumping through the MCSE hoop was likely enough and didn't bother with the 2K3 upgrade. Likely won't bother with any exams for 2K8 either, but I did sign up for the (currently freebie) MS E-learning course though and will work through that "as and when" looking for gaps to fill. Whether I'll remember any useful fillers by the time 2K8 starts turning up in significant numbers is another matter.

It's a long long long story. I started out on a Commodore PET at school, then got an Ohio Superboard and learned to code in BASIC and 6502 assembler. Moved up the BBC Micro Model B then Atari ST1024 and finally a PC. At the same time I went to Sheffield Uni to study Comp. Science, dropped out and got a job as a school Tech. Next step was schools IT for an LEA and now I'm in IT management for Children's Services.

I started studying for an MCSE about 10yrs ago, think it was NT4 then. Didn't get very far with the course, paid a lot for it and got little out, (no self disipline back then!) eventually gave it up and got a job at Halfords!

 

3 yrs later, landed a network managers position at a school based purely on my experience outside my job. Moved on form there 2 years ago for a job in a larger school with less responsibility, and better pay.

 

Thinking about studying again when server 2008 courses become more widely available, this time I'd actually get off my backside and do some work!!
