Win 7 Computers restarting instead of shutting down

Morning All,

 

Just wondering if anyone can offer some advice? I have a suite of 15 Fujitsu Lifebook A544 laptops all running Win7 x64. When told to shutdown they turn off, and immediately power back on.

 

I've tried BIOS update / various BIOS settings to no avail, doesn't seem to be a common problem with this particular laptop when I've searched the web, but a suite of 15 are doing the same thing. After a couple of attempts they appear to shutdown properly.

 

I've tried "sfc.exe /scannow" I've tried changing the value of "PowerDownAfterShutdown" in "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon" from 0 to 1 as was a fix in XP for a similar issue.

 

Windows is updated to the full, and all drivers are up to date. Power on lan is disabled in BIOS and power options on the network card on the PC are set to not allow the card to wake the pc

 

Any helps appreciated.

My immediate thoughts are to check the Event log as to why it's rebooting instead of shutting down. If this looks OK, try disconnecting one from the domain. If it shuts down OK as standalone, then it could well be a GPO or script causing the system to restart instead of shutdown as expected.

we had 3 computer from stone. all with the new MSI boards Turned out to be a fault within the bios and you had to disable "Resume from PS/2 mouse and Keyboard and usb"

I've also had this in the past and it turned out to be software called secures, a bit of a long shot but worth a mention.

Just wondering why just a few are reporting this issue.

I had that on some Asus boards years ago it only stopped when we turned WOL off which was unhelpful to us but the only way to keep the things off.

I found in the end that Fast Boot in the BIOS was causing this... I just disabled it, and they've been fine since.

I got my money back from Fujitsu so I can't test this.

Nice to know. Fujitsu told me that they can not reproduce this error and they seemed not to be aware of this malfunction.

This seems to be the second buggy funtion in the bios.

I was using 1.19 but this problem never get solved (even after a mainboard replacement). And it does not occur only in Win 7, also in Win 8.1

Odd - but to be honest, we've installed hundreds of this particular model of laptops across various schools and these particular 15 were the only ones we had this issue with. Even a further 15 we purchased a few months later at the same school (which had the exact same image put on them) didn't suffer from this problem...

 

Never experienced the other issue you mentioned however.

Were these machines plugged into the LAN? I've seen computer where you could change the wake-up conditions between magic packet, pattern matching or both. If pattern matching was selected then the box would turn on if something was trying to talk to it. If the NIC supports the options they can be changed in Device Manager > 'Whatever your NIC is' > Advanced tab.

Yes, in the end I found:

Oddly only ever had it on the 15 out of probably hundreds installed across other schools.

I think its a Windows 7 update error ... as well as the Counterfiet Windows error..

 

At my last place, about the same time as you logged this .. PCs would start to restart when told to shutdown. Was actually quite useful for student machines but no so much for Non Teaching desktops or Teacher Laptops

We've found that even after disabling fast boot in BIOS the issue still occurs, its driving us mad and causing heat build up in one of our laptop trolleys! Argh!

As CTSTONE has said above, have you checked for any recently installed Windows updates that could be a culprit. Not had this particular issue myself however it's not beyond the realms of possibility with microsoft!

This was a fix in XP for a similar issue that we used to get quite a lot and I know I've used it once or twice in Win7 too. Never had to in 10, but could be worth trying?

I have updated a few of our Fujitsu A544's to windows 10. They also seem to restart rather than shutdown. Disabling fast boot doesn't appear to work.
