Win 7 Computers restarting instead of shutting down

Thanks gtg3 unfortunately still doesn't work after trying your recommendations.

 

I have just noticed that when this laptop is 'off' the domain this does not happen.

Just an update - I have managed to stop it occurring one one machine successfully. I removed the battery and AC power lead, held down the power button for 30 seconds to discharge the board and any capacitors. I then continued to hold the power button down for 5 second intervals three times.

 

On plugging the battery back in and the AC power, the computer successfully shuts down. Still early days as I need to try this across our other impacted laptops however first signs are promising.

 

I noticed a reference to a Lenovo laptop that acted similarly due to overcharging of a capacitor...

 

"this problem is due to overcharging of a capacitor that messes up the ACPI and charging functions. also this might be triggered if you remove the charger while shutting down windows.

possible solution:

1.) power off the system by pressing the power button during restart.

2.) unplug the charger then remove the battery pack.

3.) press the power button for at least 30 seconds then press it again 5 times with 5 seconds intervals. this will discharge all remaining charge.

4.) put back the battery and boot up the system.

5.) plug the charger."
