We are a comp with about 1200 pupils with 1nm and 2 technicians -all part time and term time only. I am trying to make a case to have one of these full time but having a hard time. How many techs do other schools employ and are they part or full time?

You need to look at the volume of NTT work that may be required over a full year. That's the first test; if you can't quantify it, can you otherwise prove that such a requirement exists?

I'm not saying it doesn't exist; I'm just saying, what would you want to be going on during the holidays and what benefits would it bring to the school?

About 1200 students, 1 network manager and two technicians here: All full-time [However one of the technicians has his job split 50:50 between the network and project management]

1200 students 140 staff but perhaps a better measurement is desktops and services provided? 800 desktops, plus staff iPad scheme, plus byod for staff and students and general personal mobile device support for staff personal devices I.e laptop screen repairs charged to the user.

1 network manager full time

1 network admin full time

1 it tech full time 40% off site at feeder schools

1 apprentice tech

1 media tech full time 50% of time is ours

We also support a junior and a primary school who have part time techs.

Sometimes I think we could lose a member of staff, but then we get flooded with calls about how to turn things on and how do do something for the nth time even after cpd, a guide and one if us showing then 6 times a year... We respond to all teacher/classroom issues within 5 mins during a normal school day and I think we provide a good, up to date infrastructure and services, if we had less staff they would have less support and less services so it's kind of up to the SMT I guess.

However, I find it can be a never ending cycle of the more support staff you have the less it savvy the staff become, the more you support them, the more staff you need...

The NM got an email from an IT teacher the other day asking them to print a document without borders. Because the didn't know how to.

@Sam_Brown

That was a lot like my last school with 2k kids. I feel better about how many of us there is now, but I feel for you people with 1k plus kids and only 2 of you...! I don't know how you would cope with that and stay anything like on top of the kit.

It's not really about the number of students, it is about what the school is doing with the technology.

Higher ratios of device : students require more effort to maintain them.

More embedded use of ICT requires greater levels of support (beyond break-fix).

Heavy engagement is social media/web requires additional time and skills.

Reprographics and telephony are also sometime within scope for IT teams.

Not to mention specialised skills required supporting Media and Music Technology.

For some schools this all falls under the purview of the IT Services team, for others it is split across the subjects and Premisis/admin.

Although helpful having my 4/5 technician, it's still a struggle and reminds me of days I was totally alone. I feel for you.

It's what Ephylyon has said - it really does come down to your work load.

Having spent a large time at two different Schools, same amount of Students and Staff. The two are very different in terms of work loads, my old job we spent years making things work permanently. At my current job we are spending too much time fighting fires. Then there is the Mobile device scheme.

There is so much here that has been badly planned and put together with tape and glue. Although things are improving it's still going to take another 2-3 years to make the changes I have started.

We have 4 technicians and one is term time only on a short time contract. I have had to make a case to keep him on for another Year which I will discuss with the deputy head possible next week. One of the main reasons why we walked away from netbooks to tablets is the support time required on those compared to tablets.

Sorry edit: didn't give you the useful info.

1600 Students

200 Staff

600 PCs

up to 1000 mobile devices

90 Projectors

70 IWBs

Our Support team is heavily relied on to organise equipment for events (usually attend too), setup for halls etc. Do a bit of admin work, keep our website updated, support everything IT. Staff here really do have the attitude of "Who ever has an IT issue go to IT" at the start of the lesson regardless of the problem.

725 children, 85 staff, 120 desktop PCs, 100 laptops, no tablets (yet).

Just me, the ICT Manager.

And yes, if its got a plug on it, I end up dealing with it.

That's what makes the job so varied though, and that's why we love doing it! :p

~1150 Kids, ~150 staff, ~500 devices - 1 x Network Manager (Full Time), 1 x Apprentice Tech (Full Time) and 1 x Classroom Tech (Term Time Only). We have a new Sixth Form opening in September and I've been told no more staff will be available until at least September 2015, even then that will be an apprentice role.

We cope though, it's busy and very varied which what makes it enjoyable, but there are times we could do with a bit of quiet time.

You really have been thrown in at the deep end! At least you have edugeek to keep you slightly sane ;) Still there's no better way to learn than on the job.

Hats off to you for sticking with it. Many would have packed that in. As mentioned, learning on the job is always best. :)
