pooley Posted March 21, 2014 Posted March 21, 2014 OK I thought i'd be a good hubby and book a weekend away to London for the wife's birthday. Booked the train tickets ages ago - nice and cheap then. I have since discovered it's the same bl@@dy weekend as the London marathon, and reasonable priced hotels are like hen's teeth! Not knowing london at all i'm after a bit of advice on hotels maybe in the outskirts of london with good tube access in? The rail tickets I bought were non-refundable so it's either loose £100 on them or find a reasonably priced hotel. I'll pay up to/around £200 ish for the 2 nights. Any idea's ? Si
Seb1780 Posted March 21, 2014 Posted March 21, 2014 Good luck on that one. We've got friends running in the marathon and decided a long time ago to give up on staying in London that weekend as the prices seemed to have doubled.

That's an excellent idea - the original poster could probably do worse than Woking, which has trains direct to Waterloo every 15 minutes taking maybe half an hour to get in (as much time as you'd take on the tube anyway). Walk out of Waterloo station and you're right on the Southbank, next to the London Eye and other attractions - you can walk over and watch the marathon, too. London will be heaving for the marathon, and the trains will be packed by the time they get in, you might have to wait for a bit until a train with space on it turns up.

We stayed out at Twickenham for the Olympics due to shortage of good hotels and that was fine too - we went into central London from there with no trouble- looking on Trivago there seems to be some vacancies Edited March 21, 2014 by witch
CAM Posted March 21, 2014 Posted March 21, 2014 Stay in the south, somewhere near a rail station as South London has an extensive rail network instead of the Tube. Zone 6 means you can get a travel card too to save fussing around with Oyster. Croydon/Purley are within the London travel zones and sit on the Brighton mainline giving 24/7 rail travel 20mins or less to London.

Cover floor in litter from take-aways to provide further aroma and a similar feel underfoot. 3. Invite lots of complete strangers into your home to push and shove and stare blankly at you when you speak to them. 4. Watch the marathon on TV. Saves on hotel bills.

Hiltons are used a lot by buisness travellers and can be very quiet at the weekends, So unless there's an England match or something on, you might be able to get a bargain. 1

The only thing I'd say is that if it's the Marathon weekend then the centre of London with be chaotic.
Dos_Box Posted March 25, 2014 Posted March 25, 2014 Last time I went down and took the family we stayed at the Premier Inn Hammersmith (only just in Hammersmith!). It's close to a tube station, but possibly far enough out not to be too busy.

Si London Docklands have a Premier Inn I think. There is also a Crowne Plaza - really nice place very short walk from DLR and the Emirates cable car too Crowne Plaza London Docklands - London

Ben Not far from Stevenage there is also Welwyn Garden City. Other places to have a look at will be Elstree and Borehamwood, Watford or Slough too... Good luck finding a hotel and remember to check when the last train is - platforms aren't very comfortable to sleep on!

Having said that there are lots of B&Bs in Hillingdon. You have a choice of Ruislip, Ickenham or Hillingdon tubestations.
