Apparently, it's only a gimmick if you are Apple since loads of Smartphones are expected to have one in the near future. And the Galaxy S5 already has one although they are apparently running into production problems

 

no i still think its a gimmick if every phone has it i just dont see the need/point and why would i want apple/google to have my fingerprints?

Almost every laptop has them despite them being proved almost useless in every pen test by people who don't manufacturer them for a living. I thing required gimmick status does apply, there are mythbusters EPs that show how bad they all are.

Typical of an iPhone related post to concentrate on things that barely make a selling point. I still can't understand why people buy a 5S over a 5C.

 

RAM. Max 32Gb on the 5C, 64Gb on the 5S. It's the reason I bought the 4S I have now. I need 64Gb for all my MP3's.

 

That said, I think - after having owned a iPhone 2, iPhone 3S and iPhone 4S - I'll be going for a Sony Z1 Compact, or maybe Z2 next time! iPhone is far, far too expensive even on heavety contracts to be worthwhile any more. I can get a more than good enough Sony at half the cost and fit a 64Gb SDHC card.

Not questioning the validity of the original artical or other wise - The results do make sense given Apples history at choosing quality components over price/specifications. Picturer quality on cameras as alway been about lens quality over everything else. Wouldn't surprise me to learn Apple are buying the best lenses and sacrificing pixel count on cost.

As to the dollar, its still an Apple product and pledging even a dollar is painful for me. As to materials gaffa tape, play-d'oh and hot glue are all acceptable and there extra points if it does not work when your finished

It also shows that the iPhone 4S and 5 are better than the Samsung S3, but the iPhone 5S isn't as good as the Galaxy S4.

 

I have an S4, and generally i am disappointed with the camera...

I actually find it quite useful, especially in the car. or if there's someone nearby and I don't want them to see my PIN.

You could use an NFC sticker in the car or get tasker to detect you are in a moving car and open your phone for you. Both of these options work very well.

Depends on which of the tests backs up your preference

 

Go back three months and use the test where the Lumia wins, S4 2nd and iPhone 3rd.

Use latest test if you want iPhone to be best.

 

In my own humble opinion, Lumia cameras are by far the best.

True that best SLR camera is always going to take the best photos.

 

But smartphones are the most used "cameras" in the world these days because the best camera is always the one that you have with you. The great SLR that you have back home isn't much good if you need to take a photo right now.

Given my 920 has an outstanding track record as my personal smartphone and an awesome camera to boot, I could see the 1020 with its similar form factor and even better camera being an outstanding choice for you.

Im not saying they are brilliant or a gimick etc but just as one example where they have been useful is

 

We use cisco ip communicator aka voip soft phones on win 7 laptops and if you go and grab a cuppa, come back from lunch or lock your screen so you can do something and you get a phone call, you can't answer the phone from the lock screen sooooo

 

It has been quicker, easier etc to swipe ya finger to unlock ya computer and answer the phone in comparison to pressing ctrl + alt + delete , ensure the cursors in the password field, type the password and press enter and then try and answer the phone. More often than not Ive missed the call before I manage to logon in the usual process

 

 

This is a different story on smart phones as it gives you the option to answer phone calls without logging in or entering anything ie pass code or swiping ya finger ( as far as im aware so could be wrong )

Yep I love mine. Just be aware app availablility is truly awful on windows phone platform, here's an example, I got free Sky Sports Mobile included with my 1020..... only problem is sky only do a Iphone and Android app... no windows...so guess what, can't use my free subscription that was sold as a selling point for my phone contract!!

I love my Xperia Z1 now I can go back to reading in the bath via Kindle app. Plus can take it to the beach film the kids running in/out of the sea etc without worrying that one of the little darlings will throw a bucket over me. I think the camera is good, it's better after the recent updates (not kitkat yet!) certainly much better than the S2 and S3 love the motion shot software that Sony supply I shot some images of the eldest going down a big slide at Bewilderwood and you get one image of the slide with dozens of images of his journey down in and the expression on his face just LOL.

 

Personally I think we're getting to (gotten to??) the point where pixel density is irrelevant whats really holding it back now is the optics there's only so much you can do with such a small sensor and tiny lens

Then you are doing something horribly wrong or you are an awfully slow typist. On windows, when you press CTRL+ALT+DEL on a lock screen by default the password field is highlighted and ready to type into. Also, if its your password, you type it daily, it should be second nature to speed type it in (mine is 13 digits long for work, takes me less than 1 second to type and press enter). If you are unable to answer a call from a locked machine in 5 seconds, then you have issues.

 

Now say for example you get a paper cut on your finger, depending on the sensitivity of the reader, once that cut is there, you can't use it again as the scar tissue will have altered your fingerprint. So its a gimmick that's a bit rubbish.
