  1. @mikes, you have no idea of the situation I came from last year, LOL. The poor guy has just about lost all responsibility since I quit bailing him out.
  2. Might as well 'fess up and say you don't know when you don't know.
  3. Not sure if the OP is trolling or not, but I have a question: what do you do when you don't know something?
  4. Make sure you give your PM server a FQDN (not .local) and make sure it has a static IP on your network as well as and is NAT'd to an external address on your firewall. Open the ports outlined here: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT202487
  5. Agreed...however, lets try to help the OP work with what they have while helping them move forward.
  6. He may not have a choice
  7. I don't think Meraki will tie in with LDAP and if he can't externally face the machine running Profile Manager that would explain it. Some sysadmins don't care for externally facing machines like this.
  8. Try Autopkgr. Install it on a second server and tie the repo to your management tool (Munki, Casper, etc.). It will automatically pick up newer versions of packages when it runs and create policies to automatically deploy them to machines in the device scope. Imagine never having to touch a machine for Flash updates!
  9. We use a hosted exchange server that is going away at the end of this school year along with Google Apps. We are absolutely tired of running out of space, maintaining a server, spam filtering, teacher and student confusion, and ll of the other issues that go into maintaining two systems. Go to Google Apps and be done with it. Maintaining two systems is redundant and costs both money and man hours
  10. Do you have a caching server turned on?
  11. OK: I now have CCC backing up a sparseimage of each machine nightly (offset of course) to our NAS. Score one for safety and automation.
  12. Thanks for all of the input! Nice to have 24 hour support, courtesy of my friends in Europe
  13. My job is interesting: we run two totally different systems for faculty/staff (AD with SMB file share) and students (OD with AFP). Don't ask me why we don't consolidate, but I'm all for it. It's a huge waste of money and resources for an institution our size. That said, I just discovered that the NAS used for nightly backups of our DC's has an AFP share already there. Hopefully I can just save there and forget the hardware.
  14. Sorry You're pretty quick tonight. Continuing on, I was thinking about using Carbon Copy Cloner as the software, but we have used TS in the past to do a complete restore, and it worked. I just think something that's quick to restore in the case of an outage is best.
  15. Why the surprise? We're a 1:1 school.
  16. How many users do you have? We support around 550 devices and 450 users. Not a big org, but enough to give me pause to run a JSS and OD on the same machine. Perhaps my concerns are unfounded. If I was sure, I probably wouldn't ask .
  17. We currently have 3 MacMini servers for MDM, File Sharing, and OD. I am currently using Time Machine to a standalone hard drive for backups, but that is NOT an enterprise level solution. For those who've run Mac servers for a while, what hardware and software do you use for backups and why?
  18. Yes. Sorry for the double post, but I'm on the iPhone.
  19. I see you like adding devices one at a time to groups. They force you into using their CMS for group management which sucks for anyone not using My Big Campus. I rate LS below profile manager for that reason alone. Not trying to flame here, but "friendly" is not the word I'd use to describe their MDM.
  20. That has been hit or miss with me on our JSS.

DeployStudio x10. You can put a network bind in the workflow which saves you much time.
