We tie Lightspeed into OD with groups. It works pretty well that way.

We use DS along with an odd mix of profile manager and Meraki for our MacBooks and we use the Lightspeed MDM for the iPads. The yearly cost isn't so much the issue as is the cost of the training up front. We will eventually go with CS (maybe this upcoming year) but I'm trying to get our teachers into new hardware first. Back on the topic of 7.1 MDM, they have it so that the MDM enrollment can be completed upon device issue and setup by the student and then it automatically downloads the profiles and associated apps. I think this feature may have been introduced last year, and I seem to remember provisioning settings on a version of configurator, but it was removed. It is now part of configurator version 1.5 (just released).

We're upgrading student iPads already. Call me crazy, but I've been testing it since Jan. and there have been no issues to speak of so far.

. The type of hardware in it. Yes. It's because it's an early Intel chip which will not run the latest OS. Yes. Even with Lion and extra RAM which will likely be hard to find or expensive, the last poster is right that an early version of configurator won't work. Find another device.

The software isn't that good, but SmartBoard and Promethean software suites will both work if you'd like.

We have 15 480i projectors. I've had an issue with one which was promptly handled by Epson. Yes, the pens are chunky, but our teachers love them, and they are extremely good devices for the cost.

Thanks for the tip, Steve. As for us, we have over 400 devices and users running off of our MacMini server with 16GB of RAM, and although it can be a little laggy, it's not that bad. We use it for Profile Manager, update caching and OD (no other file sharing though).

It was. I normally try to ask the obvious questions first, but sometimes, I get accused of being thick, LOL. Did you install the trust profile to the client devices (if you are not using a CA signed cert.) along with the enrollment and remote management profiles? If so, then I also assume that you went into the Profile Manager web page (servername.domain.suffix/profilemanager) and assigned your settings to the group there, right?

May be a stupid question, but are the students logging in as local users or are the computers bound to the OD?

Add Meraki System's Manager to this, and it's as good as LoJack.

Make sure you have forward and reverse DNS configured too.

I will "x2" this. Our LDAP server started crashing randomly for some reason last month, and rather than roll back to an older version, I gambled and upgraded to OS 10.9 along with Server 3.0. In doing so, I broke directory access for all 415 users as well as Profile Manager which we use for over 300 devices. Of course, this was on a weekend and I immediately rolled back to OS 10.8.4. Hopefully you catch his drift. Better the devil you know....

iPads must be able to mirror. The filtering comes into play when trying to reach iTunes as well as YouTube and other services that we may not want filtered for only those devices.

First, let me say thanks to all of you for being a polite and highly knowledgable group. I appreciate it. Scenario: Our school installed several Apple TV's last year and expanded the number this year. However, we have installed a Lightspeed Rocket filter which basically kills the ability of the Apple TV to do much of anything but mirror via AirPlay. We currently use Xirrus WiFi. Question: Do tools exist to recognize Apple TV's and put them on a separate subnet so we can keep them unfiltered without hardwiring them in and assigning static IP's? Let it be known, I'm a bit of a network newb, but the guy who runs our network can be a human roadblock at times, so ANY help is appreciated.
