SpuffMonkey Posted February 21, 2014 Posted February 21, 2014 Just had my old Toyota Camry in to the garage as the engine warning light had come on - the diag showed it was one of the oxygen sensors that had gone - expensive bit of kit on the 3L V6 Camry - and its getting on, but a lovely car to drive and so comfortable, so bit the bullet and coughed up to have it done. Next day the warning light is on again - garage says fair enough - bring it back in on Monday - but I've been googling to see if this is a common problem (rather than just shoddy garage work) and *bum* the most common problem that shows up for this is a knackered catalytic converter - which is the sharp end of £1200 - more than the car is worth...gutted... Still, hope springs eternal and it might just be a cock up on the sensor front - but not feeling hopeful. Could really do without this in my present straightened circumstances...
Trapper Posted February 22, 2014 Posted February 22, 2014 My Mk 1.5 Focus randomly has the engine management light going on and off for no good reason. In the end I coughed up £30 and bought the diagnostic tool. Every error is an N/A - not listed in the thousands of codes. Then paid to have a garage take a look - their diagnosis - a dodgy ECU as it was the first generation Ford fit as standard. Now I just put up with it unless it stays on for a day or two, then I connect the machine and delete. More concerning the oil light keeps flashing up for a split second. At first I thought I was seeing things as it's so quick, but I had to break hard going down a steep hill last week and actually caught the bugger.

3s-gtech Posted February 22, 2014 Posted February 22, 2014 If it's dead, sell it to someone with an MR2 - the 1MZ-FE engines are very popular swaps into SW20 MR2s and a complete one with loom is worth far more. They won't care about the cat either.

mdench Posted February 23, 2014 Posted February 23, 2014 I hate my polo at the moment. The tail gate window is coming unstuck cheapest place to rip it out and re bond it back in whats £90. Jumped in it this evening blown headligh and side light (replaced all the bulbs in it about 4 months ago?) Drivers and passenger window mechanisms need replacing £90 a door And the heat shield on the front of the exhaust where it comes out the block is now staying to come loose where the metal has cracked on the shield around the bolts so will need replacing soon before it drops off

My Astra keeps giving random "Catalyst below optimum operation" warnings...Android phone, plus Torque Pro app, plus Bluetooth OBD2 dongle = clear the code. Google youtube, renovating catalysts. Good vid. I put some nail polish remover (same stuff) in the tank and took the old girl (X reg, 90k on the dials) for a burn to Wales for a family holiday, in sports mode...light went out, been out for 12 months now..just popped back on the other day. Ah well, wales again in april!

Oaktech Posted February 24, 2014 Posted February 24, 2014 My clutch went on friday... £325 to fix, on a car thats worth no more than £500. I'm going to fix it, basically because I want to keep the car going until it does 300,000 miles - it's got 25k to go! It also needs £50 of rear brakes, £100 of power steering pumps and hoses and a replacement exhaust as the current one is not right and is rubbing on the rear suspension, but I can do those myself! 1
mac_shinobi Posted February 24, 2014 Posted February 24, 2014 (edited) My car desperately needs a full service, currently it needs new wish bones for the front and maybe anti-roll link arms / bushes , The drivers side wing de-rusting and re spray painting, the passenger side wing mirror either needs the glass replacing with the correct glass or replacing altogether. Minor thing but the air con does not work and the passenger side front seat does not heat properly and I would like one of those rear windscreen view mirrors that auto dimms ( that would be nice ) Obviously after it has a full service will find out ref tyres, brakes and anything else Glad it's not just me that has issues with cars. I've had 2 Peugeot 405s that have done well over 250,000 (both are still driving around the local area) another that I sold for £400 with 465,000 on the clock with a full MOT! I've always gone for good looking high milers based on the fact that they must be pretty sound to get to that mileage. My X Reg Xsara has done 272,000 miles and apart from consumable items has been good as gold. I've heard from the garage today and the clutch looked like the original, so I'm not too bothered about replacing it!
