Astra's seem quite robust..on my 3rd. Brakes are original, and they don't get spared. Second set of front springs due to both snapping, but I have to pass a lot of speedbumps every day, and as I say, the car isn't spared..I also do a road that's subsiding several times a week, like a rollercoaster - frequent rapid "full travel" thrashing of the units.

Exhaust totally replaced now, over 2 years. Just tyres and timing belts as a rule, over 5 years of merciless owning so far. Due a service (but it can wait for summer, as I want to service the autobox too), one of the plugs keeps cutting out, so new plugs needed. Cat warning came on and is now off again, so I'll ignore it..and the "airbags inoperative" warning is on - annoying but non-critical, I know what's causing that..I just need to get under the seat..heh..

If looked after older french stuff is fine

+1 to that. My brother's 307 has done over 200,000 miles. Drives and looks perfect, no wear to the upholstery. And there are no big bills, just lots of receipts for regular oil changes and the usual parts which wear, like brakes and tyres. But all parts are cheap and easy enough to fit yourself.

I had the wish bones replaced Feb 2013 and they need doing again as they have split on both the front ones

Are they genuine parts or copies? The Peugeot 407 suffers from similar problems, but it seems that people who buy cheap Ebay parts have to replace them more than genuine dealer ones. The daft thing is that the genuine parts aren't much dearer.

Well - panic over - took the car back in today and it turned out that the replacement sensor was duff and causing a lean fuel mix that resulted in misfires - (another) new sensor and everything is peachy - phew!
