Recommend me an ADSL ISP

I've been helping out a friend who is looking to move ISP's and after looking around the 'majors' and thinking that there must be something better out there. The ISP and its services should ideally meet the following criteria:

 

 

1. Have a 'superfast' service and FTCC where possible
   
2. Have good/excellent upload speeds
   
3. Offer a broadband only package so they don't have to get a phone contract as well
   
4. No usage caps (like Virgin)
   
5. Unlimited data
   
6. Any other goodies you can think of such as static IP's etc.
   

 

So, if you can give me some suggestions it would be very helpful.

Check their post code on Sam Knows (SamKnows - Broadband Availability Checker) It'll tell you if FTTC or 21CN are available and from which suppliers. If not see which suppliers have LLU (local loop unbundled) on that exchange and choose between them for the best speeds.

Just wondering - if you did go with Plus Net for Internet / Phone , who could you go with for TV or would it be a case of free view / free sat etc ? Or are there other options that I am missing ?

I'm with ADSL24, no monitoring your traffic (Virgin, talktalk, BT) & reporting to music companies, no port blocking or throttling.

Just had a look at the Plusnet site. You do need to pay a line rental even if you don't have a phone. Strangely, it's cheaper to take the broadband and calls package than it is to take the same level of broadband only. I'll have to look into that further.

Any ADSL via a BT line you will need to pay line rental. I think it is cheaper to take their phone package too but just dont use it.

I think they must already have a phone line with a provider and not be wanting to move that as well?

Isn't Sky the only ISP that offer a completely unlimited package? No usage cap and no throttling?

Unsure but my Sky unlimited has been fine, good speeds and seems to not cause any issue for me so far. No static IP though which is an ass really But the Sky router which you have to use does have options to add in DynDNS details so you can fudge your way around it a bit if needed not idea but can be done.

You can have 8 Static IPs on the home version for free if you want, no throttling, actual technical people at the other end of the phone. They are not unlimited but the top package does have a 500GB cap per month which is pretty high.
