How to Shutdown network printers in school??

Hi Guys

 

I was wondering if anyone have got any program or anything that i can use to shutdown school printers around the school, save me hassle to go round the classrom and shut it down manually.

Its a project for me to save school electricity.

The most reliable thing I can think of would be a timer switch like this:

Not sure why you'd bother - modern printers draw about 5w when they go to sleep.

Your looking at about £6 per year per printer for it sleeping.

 

A full power down and restart ( without sleep ) may actualy use more energy overall.

Our HT had a brainwave a few years back that printers were the source of all our ills and they were too expensive to leave on overnight.

We spent a couple of weeks (I say we, I spent a day,m and the apprentice spent the next couple of weeks) testing the power usage on the printers as they switched on and off etc etc.

It turned out, as twin-turbo mentioned, it's more expensive switching them on in the morning and letting go through their self test!

 

Worse for MFD's

They use essentially NO power when in sleep mode, but to power up and warm up cost a fortune in comparison.

Projectors / light bulbs / any or all computers that are left running over night or over the weekends ??

 

Prolly a daft thought / idea here but if you had a POE Injector ( would that

 

A) Power the printer or be capable of powering a printer ?

B) Can the POE Injector be remotely powered off over the network ?

Try making sure all projectors are turned off at the switch if possible, then switch off laptop charging trolleys at weekends,

 

There is so much more to check that uses more power then printers.

Heck, getting the teachers to switch the projectors off when they're not using them would be a start!

 

I've lost count of the number of times I've walked into a class to a teacher giving a lesson with the whiteboard proudly showing off the desktop, their email, or the logon screen. Often the teacher is standing in front of the projector squinting through the light. And yet that little "ding" never goes off in their head.
