Originally it was from their sponsorship agreement with West, specifically to sponsor their 'West Light' brand which uses silver. Following that people believe it was for their links with Mercedes though I don't believe there was actually any agreement between Mercedes and Mclaren. Vodaphone had an agreement for red to be on the car however, so perhaps they chose to offset it against silver. It's a bit surprising that they haven't used white, while a lot of people point out that Mclaren only used white and red because of Malboro, it's worth remembering that Honda have always used White and Red for practically all of their racing endeavours. So it's not impossible to have a Red and White Mclaren.

Should be a nice little shake up. Commiserations to Daniel Ricciardo, though: the 2015 season is staying on a 4 engine limit.

Should be a nice little shake up. This has the potential to take racing back to a procession it previously was. Overtaking will be reduced as tyres won't be degrading so quickly. Everyone knows a car should be able to complete a race without refuelling, if they are going to keep the flow rate the same then this is just a weight saving measure to speed the cars up. F1 needs to fundamentally change how teams are funded and remove the consolidation of power within the sport from elite teams. The pot of money going to teams needs to be split 50/40/10, 50% split equally between all teams as a fixed amount. 40% used as prize money and 10% used to support smaller teams as they won't have the sponsorship large teams have. F1 should pay for transport costs for all teams not just the top 6 teams. I don't see why the cars need to go faster, from my perception the faster they go the amount of wheel to wheel racing goes down. 1

Yes they share of money needs addressing since it is a little iffy at present F1 should pay for transport costs for all teams not just the top 6 teams. FOM do pay for transport costs for all teams who were top 10 in the previous year. Next year the only team that certainly won't have free transport is Haas F1
