well if you alredy have it, jsut make a simple database of the items. If you dont have Access use openoffice Base http://www.openoffice.org

How about Spice Works It gone go off and pick up hardware information.

 

I've tried it on our network however it looks like NEC have not put their serial number in the serial number section, so when i query a machine i get a complete different number shame reall becuase we could have gone from no asset management to a great deal!

 

I've got some other utils at work for this, I'll check them out Monday to see if there any good!

I know this is an old thread but I couldn't see anything definitive so I'm kind of reviving the question (apologies if that's frowned upon here).

 

I'm looking for some auditing software, but I would like something that is NOT a live scan. i.e. it will collect details of all computers/hardware on the network whether they are currently turned on or not.

 

I have a very rough vbs script that sort of works - it lists certain info as a startup script; check if it's in list if not list basic hardware from WMI - but is quite limited and I was hoping to save the time developing it further.

 

What I'm thinking is that if you can't always be sure all computers are actually turned on when you do you audit "scan", particularly if you have a couple of trollys of laptops and maybe some computers in side rooms that may not always be used, or teachers laptops that flit in and out of the building.

 

So I'd like something that will automatically keep an audit list/database up to date in the background whenever computers are connected/are available so that I can just pull off the list whenever I want and know that it contains all the equipment that has been connected. Obviously this may contain obsolete/disposed of equipment, but conversely it can also highlight euipment that is rarely or never used (assuming a "last updated" date is included).

 

Or do most audit systems do this already? Might it be worth developing my script a bit further?

Spiceworks etc log when things are online, show them as offline when they've been picked up but are not available - so the end result is already what you were describing, unless I got lost in your description?

I posted in another thread about using XAMPP and OpenaudIT. Both are freeware. Setup is fairly simple, run the audit.vbs as a part of the logon process.

Wish I'd read this when it was posted. I spent a long time trying to work out why I couldn't retrieve serials from NEC machines at one site. They still don't put them in!
