[MDT 2012] Installing .Net 4.0 during Deployment

We are using MDT 2012 as our deployment solution in school and this is working great. One problem I have run into though is installing .Net 4 as part of the deployment as this is required for SIMS. I have downloaded the offline installer and set up this to install in the Applications part of MDT with the following quiet install command "dotNetFx40_x86_x64.exe" /passive /norestart /showfinalerror. This still does not install .Net 4 and leaves me having to install it manually which is not what I am wanting as we are having to re-image the whole school in the summer as part of our domain upgrade.

Also, are you using the 'full' installer?

Why not add it to your reference image?

We added .NET 4.5 as part of our reference image, although automated using "Install Application" Task as part of the build sequence.

You can import dot net into MDT so it's installed from the applications tab of the MDT wizard. This way it's installed with your image.

I have tried using the above command suggested by Arthur which unfortunately didn't work. I have the full installer downloaded from the link provided.

 

IKWeb could you give me some instructions on how to do this? I have already added dot net 4 as an application in MDT and given it the command /passive /norestart and also set the GUID ID in the Rules tab so that it automatically installs but it still doesnt work.

 

Any more help would be appreciated

I think .NET is one of the weird ones which doesn't like the /q argument, try it with the /b for basic UI rather than /q for no UI I think that works then

I strongly recommend you to add DotNet 4 to your golden image before sysprep, it just makes things easier.

To install DotNet 4 you need to add it to your Tasksequence. To do so add DotNet 4 to your Application on the MDT server.

For the quiet install just type Setup.exe

Now all you need to do is add the installation in your tasksequence.

There is a few ways to do it. I prefer to install it before I capture the image. I change my deployment shared and it make it faster.

Yes, me too. This is part of the deployment task used to create the "base unit" that will later be used as the "default image" for all our deployments.

I agree, it's better to include as part of the master image as it takes forever to install. I'd recommend .NET 4.5 these days as there are few post updates to install afterwards.

This is exactly why I install it in the golden image because once you install it, you have about 10 more updates to install.

Thanks very much for the info here it is greatly appreciated. I will give this a go on Monday when I am back in work.

 

I previously installed .Net 4.0 in my image before sysprep and capture as we are including lots of software and updates to avoid installing them after deployment. Once I had captured my image with .Net 4.0 installed and deployed this to a laptop, it appeared that it had somehow removed .Net from the image.

 

The reason I need .Net 4.0 installed is because we run SIMS in our school and SIMS requires .Net 4.0 to run. After reading the posts on here I will install .Net 4.5 though.

SIMS and Smart Notebook 11 for example work absolutely fine with .NET 4.5. At the time of writing there are 7 post updates to install. With .NET 4 it's more like 12+ post updates.

We have .NET 4.5 installed as a single task sequence part of the build Image stage just after IE9 which is installed also as its own task sequence, this works fine.

 

Using the command: dotNetFX45_Full_x86_x64.exe /quiet /norestart

 

We have a windows update Task Sequence run straight afterwards.

Thank you guys, I have tested this during a deployment and got it working with the /passive /norestart command line.

 

I am going to try and capture it in the image that I will be deploying to save time. The last time I tried it wasn't included when I captured it for some reason even though it was installed before capture.

 

I am going to try it again though to make things easier.

I have installed dot net 4.5 on our image and captured the image. I have then added this to a task sequence and deployed the image to a laptop but again dot net 4.5 is not installed even though it was installed when I captured the image.

 

Has anybody else found that when they have deployed an image that was captured with dot net 4.5 installed, it is not included??
