40 years of the Mobile..what was your first phone?

My first phone was a Motorola V3688 in 1999. I think it must have been one of the smallest available at the time.

I had one of these, I think back in around 2001. It was a £30 offer in Morrisons for my 13th birthday.

 

Then following that was a Nokia 3310, 7250 (second hand), 6230 and 6230i, N73, N85, 6500 slide (still have this as spare), Blackberry Bold 9700, HTC Desire HD. The last 4 have been contracts so been replacing every 18/24 months. Cahsed the N73, N85 and Blackberry in last February for £123.

 

Wish I still had the Motorola was solid as a brick just more to see how they have come on from when I first got one.

 

Due an upgrade soon, more than likely the S4.

Oh forgot my work phones, Nokia 6230i at one place, Nokia 1100 with torch, 3109c, Blackberry 8520, HTC (windows based one - was poo), Samsung Galaxy Ace and then in new job just got a HTC One SV, cracking phone for a work one.

 

Still have the old Blackberry too, quite a good solid phone which comes in handy when mine is broke!

My first phone was an NEC box in the boot of the car with a handset on the dashboard. Cost around £1500. I then got a similar Panasonic thing but the transceiver in the boot could be removed a slotted into a portable rig complete with full size handset. Weighed a ton. This was back in 1985.

 

When I was in the RAF one of my jobs was to service remote radio sites, which included sheds on Salisbury Plain. The back of my landrover was crammed full of radio gear and I had a hand throttle to keep the engine revs up because the generator couldn't handle the load at tickover. Concorde was doing its test flights around then and its own VHF frequency. I was at a remote dropping site at RAF Kemble and the OIC was getting agitated because Concorde was coming towards us and 4 or 5 Hercules coming in at low level to do a heavy goods drop. I dialed up their frequency and asked politely if they could move away. "Roger, we're out of here" came the reply. The left wing dipped and it was like the opening sequence of Startrek as this dot disappeared into the distance. Nothing to do with phones but a fond memory.

 

Remind me sometime to tell the story about me calling up RAF Woodvale's approach radar to get directions.

I had used a portable brick (Panasonic, I think, with a red LED display), but the Sony was my first, personally owned phone.

Back in the mid eighties I worked for BT and we were issued for call outs a unit that looked like a car battery with a handset attached via the Curley wire, keypad on handset, but boy was it heavy. It even charged from the van fag lighter socket.

I also remember having a Nokia that was so flippin' tiny I couldn't press the buttons properly!

Oh and some dreadful early Windows phones. Had one of them on me when I was in a taxi that had an accident. As I lay on the floor of the taxi I pulled out my fancy phone to call an ambulance to find that the bloody thing had crashed! "Hang on a minute mate" I shouted to the cabbie "just gotta reboot my phone"

Mine was a Trium Astral first. It looked like it would be so much better than the 5110's everyone was using. It wasn't.

 

I remember my dad having a Vodafone car phone in the early 90's which absolutely blew my mind. A phone...IN A CAR?

Not long after I got my NEC carphone, I spotted an accident at Spaghetti Junction where there'd been an oil spill and a couple of cars had hit the armco. I called 999 using hands-free but lifted the handset to talk to the police controller (no laws in those days). When I'd finished, I replaced the handset and continued down the Aston Expressway singing along to the radio. A minute or so later, a voice came out of the hands-free speaker "Have you finished the call mate?" He never commented on my singing.

A Phillips C12 (the one on the left). It was a great little phone on BT's first pay-as-you-go service. It was so nice not to have to use phone boxes anymore (I was in the army at the time).

Was an excelent phone with a PHYSICAL slide lock for the keyboard, and a jog wheel for the menu.

 

Been prety much Sony/Sony ericson User ever since

 

Only deviation was a Nokia 7110 ( The one a little like the Matrix phone with the sliding keyboard cover ) and my fist android an LG optimus...

I think an unbranded version of this was my first cell too, an Ericson before sony got involved. It could recive texts but not send them, it may have eve been an older one.
