[sims] Nearly 2 minutes to open SIMS.net?

We had our LEA in on Monday migrating our SIMS.net database from one running Windows 2008 Sql 2008 to a new one (virtual) running Server 2012 R2 and SQL 2012.

 

It now runs like a dog....from clicking OK to the program opening is taking between 90 and 120 seconds.

 

It's the same on the Server as clients.

 

Anyone got any ideas?

 

They've dialled in to put on some patches to speed it up but it's made no difference at all !

 

It just sits saying "loading".....then eventually it does open.

I'd say the virtual environment is incorrectly configured.

What's the spec of the underlying storage of the virtual environment?

I've increased RAM to 24 GB and it took 117 seconds to open SIMS.net on the server...

Check to see if the memory limit in SQL has been enabled.

 

Whats is the performance hit like on your resources for that server?

 

Have you checked the basics like DNS etc?

LEA have replied :

 

"....there are only 2 core allocated to the Virtual Machine and the minimum requirement is 4 core."

Is it better to increase the sockets to 4 and leave cores per socket at 1 OR to leave sockets at 2 and increase cores per socket to 2 ???

RAM increased to 24 GB

Cores in creased to 2 (2 sockets)

 

Still took 2 minutes for SIMS to open.

If you've got anti-virus installed on the server, it could be scanning the SQL database when you're accessing it, which you obviously don't want? Have you set up any exceptions to stop it from doing this?

Im thinking maybe create a new VM install SQL and migrate or restore the database to see what happens on a fresh VM, just to rule out LA's install procedures.

We've not pushed Sophos out to the server yet.....

Im thinking maybe create a new VM install SQL and migrate or restore the database to see what happens on a fresh VM, just to rule out LA's install procedures.

 

The old SIMS VM is still available - shut down - but not deleted....I'm pushing for the LEA to return to site to finish the job properly.

 

I am fairly certain when they left site on Monday lunchtime it was fine, but then they needed to remote in to finish off installing DISCOVER, which they had lots of problems with, eventually they get it working, maybe they messed something up in doing so....

Sounds like something more fundamental as our SIMS server is running on 8Gb and it loads in about 20 seconds. Have you got anything else running on the virtual environment? Is it running from local or shared storage? Is the firewall active on the SIMS box? What connectivity is between the machine you're loading SIMS on and the SIMS server?

 

*edit* does the SIMS server have the SIMS workstation client installed directly on it? If so, how long does that take to load?

It's the holidays here now so only about 2 of us logged on across the whole site.

 

Yes, the server has the client on it and it takes the same length of time on the server c. 2 minutes to open up the application.

 

Opening other apps, such as Acrobat Reader on the server open in a normal timely manner.....

 

The firewall is turned off.....

Or SAN & Physical hosts were all new back at Easter....all other servers are performing well.....

 

I think it's something they've done whilst trying to get DISCOVER to run! They are on the server now, digging around....
