kennysarmy Posted July 22, 2015 Author Posted July 22, 2015 @kennysarmy What's the size of the SIMS LDF? 1024 Kb. SIMS LEA have now advised they are going to un-install DISCOVER tomorrow to see if performance returns....
psydii Posted July 22, 2015 Posted July 22, 2015 procmon might deliver insight in this case. The "process activity trace" tool therein can be used to see what was chewing up/blocking resources, and form there you might be able to drill down into what is going on. 1
timbo343 Posted July 22, 2015 Posted July 22, 2015 Hmmm, have you tried stopping the sql discover service? Wonder if that might have an effect on performance. If removing discover doesnt help i would be tempted to start again, i know its a long process but i would have the mind set of it needs to be right and having the option of being the summer and the database has only just been moved, starting again wont hurt.

I agree - it's if I can convince the LEA to send their chap out to site again! But we have paid for it to be successfully migrated though!
CyberNerd Posted July 23, 2015 Posted July 23, 2015 Open Management Studio, Right click on sims DB, options and change compatibility level to sql 2012 (110)
jinnantonnixx Posted July 23, 2015 Posted July 23, 2015 (edited) Did they configure the OS, data files, log files and temp dbs on separate LUNs? If not, it could be a SAN bottleneck as everything is trying to read and write down one IO pipeline at the same time. I'd use SQL Activity Monitor to get an overview of how the SQL system is running. If you're lucky, something will jump out. http://www.sqlservercurry.com/2013/04/activity-monitor-in-sql-server.html Edited July 23, 2015 by jinnantonnixx

If you're lucky, something will jump out. Activity Monitor in SQL Server We provided them with a fully patched Server 2012 R2 virtual machine. I can't see how it can be a SAN bottleneck when it was running fine on the same SAN before on the old SIMS server running Server 2008? and that was with school in full session - it's taking 90 seconds to open SIMS on the new virtual server and there are only 3 of us on the network. I'm not sure the LEA have the skills to troubleshoot this any further and suspect we will have to restore the virtual server from our vRanger backup and let them start again....
kennysarmy Posted July 23, 2015 Author Posted July 23, 2015 The LEA have dialled in, made some registry changes and un-installed DISCOVER and now logon times are 3-4 seconds as expected!!! They've raised a priority call with CAPITA to advise further.
Guest WMITTech Posted July 23, 2015 Posted July 23, 2015 Is it on every workstation or specific ones... Stupid question, if you're using a proxy, have you entered the ip range into exclude these in Internet options? so for example : Localhost,172.*.*.*?; etc?
kennysarmy Posted July 23, 2015 Author Posted July 23, 2015 Is it on every workstation or specific ones... Stupid question, if you're using a proxy, have you entered the ip range into exclude these in Internet options? so for example : Localhost,172.*.*.*?; etc? It was on very workstation as well as the server when it was taking 2 mins to load up... Now the server and all tested workstations open up in around 5 seconds. But yes in IE we have set bypass proxy server for local address and entered in 10.*
kennysarmy Posted August 4, 2015 Author Posted August 4, 2015 Weirdly..... If we turn off our old SIMS server the login times are approaching 2 minutes but if we turn it back on again they reduce to a few seconds.... The local SIMS team MUST have screwed something up......anyone any ideas what could cause this behaviour?
kennysarmy Posted August 4, 2015 Author Posted August 4, 2015 Just tried stopping all SQL and SIMS related services on the original server and logons were fine - under ten seconds, then I turned the original server off and it took almost 2 minutes to logon......
3s-gtech Posted August 4, 2015 Posted August 4, 2015 Something to do with DNS/connect.ini/S: drive mapping at a guess. I'd check the settings for each, make sure they point to the new server.
kennysarmy Posted August 4, 2015 Author Posted August 4, 2015 Something to do with DNS/connect.ini/S: drive mapping at a guess. I'd check the settings for each, make sure they point to the new server. Thanks for replying... The servers have different names. I've checked the connect.ini on the new server and it has no reference to the old server name. (I've even searched the registry for any references to it) And all logons use the same batch file which sets the S:\ drive to the share on the new server.
3s-gtech Posted August 4, 2015 Posted August 4, 2015 What are the settings on the client C:\Windows\SIMS.ini files? These won't necessarily have updated.
matt40k Posted August 4, 2015 Posted August 4, 2015 Is the old server a DNS server? Have you checked the users virtualstore for any connect.ini?
kennysarmy Posted August 4, 2015 Author Posted August 4, 2015 What are the settings on the client C:\Windows\SIMS.ini files? These won't necessarily have updated. We've been round the whole site and upated all connect.ini and sims.ini files. The slow logon affects not only the clients but the new sims server too... - - - Updated - - - Is the old server a DNS server? Have you checked the users virtualstore for any connect.ini? The old server was a designated sims server and was not performing other roles such as DNS.... Not sure what you mean by "users virtualstore" - can you provide any further information on this ?
matt40k Posted August 4, 2015 Posted August 4, 2015 Not sure what you mean by "users virtualstore" - can you provide any further information on this ? Look in: C:\Users\{{USERNAME}}\appdata\local\VirtualStore
kennysarmy Posted August 4, 2015 Author Posted August 4, 2015 Look in: C:\Users\{{USERNAME}}\appdata\local\VirtualStore Only one user on the old sims server existed that had a virtualstore folder - and that was empty How can I check the new simer server SQL for references to the old server name?
matt40k Posted August 4, 2015 Posted August 4, 2015 It's worth checking the clients too. Only place you set the server is in the connect.ini, other then for DMS - that's within the db, tools > setups > dms or something like that
kennysarmy Posted August 5, 2015 Author Posted August 5, 2015 I worked out how to do a wireshark trace between the two IP's of the new and old server and these are the results. Surely there should be no such traffic if it's been setup correctly??
kennysarmy Posted August 5, 2015 Author Posted August 5, 2015 Also found this line in the trace: 710 11.697013000 10.107.93.81 10.107.93.1 DNS 85 Standard query 0xff1a A sims01-v.curriculum.local Why is the new server trying to DNS lookup the old SIMS01-v ? is this something being called by the software at logon - and with sims01 turned off it takes ages to timeout?
kennysarmy Posted August 5, 2015 Author Posted August 5, 2015 From the trace: POST /DocumentServer.rem HTTP/1.1 User-Agent: Mozilla/4.0+(compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows 6.2.9200.0; MS .NET Remoting; MS .NET CLR 4.0.30319.34209 ) Content-Type: text/xml; charset="utf-8" SOAPAction: "http://schemas.microsoft.com/clr/nsassem/SIMS.DocumentServer.IDocumentServer/DocumentServerInterfaces#Ping" Host: sims01-v:8080 Content-Length: 572 Expect: 100-continue Connection: Keep-Alive SIMS01-V = is the old server...........this does not look right....
kennysarmy Posted August 5, 2015 Author Posted August 5, 2015 Really??? I guess if you pay peanuts you get....the server the LEA were supposed to migrate us to is called SIMS02-V
matt40k Posted August 5, 2015 Posted August 5, 2015 I worked out how to do a wireshark trace between the two IP's of the new and old server and these are the results.
