3s-gtech Posted February 22, 2017 Posted February 22, 2017 Those are AMD's own benchmarks, and paint the CPUs in their best light (as you'd expect), so it may be a little different come the 2nd. Either way, they've obviously worked damn hard on this and produced a product leagues ahead of their current crop. Should force Intel's hand on pricing, so the consumer may win again (for the first time since Phenom II)!

With Intel rolling out year on year 5-10% incremental upgrades the pace of change has slowed to a crawl without competition. With AMD still pushing in the GFX market we've seen some startling generational leaps from both Team Red & Team Green. I'd like to see this happening again in the CPU market. I'd like new releases to be exciting again! 1
DalekSec Posted February 22, 2017 Author Posted February 22, 2017 Really tempted to get the 1800x, trying to get a rough cost together. Bit hard as i can't find any Motherboards at the moment that fit it, plus the UK Pre-orders aren't out yet.

I really do hope they have made the speed leaps they say they have. Intel needs the competition and it will be nice to see AMD back in the ring again as it's been almost 12 years since Intel saw them off with the Core family then buried them with the i series. We have now contacted Corsair and have confirmed that the company already has coolers on the market that support AM4 and that the company will be working on mounting kit upgrades for their other recent AIO liquid coolers. Below is a list that has been provided to us by Corsair, which lists all of the Corsair AIOs that currently support and will support AMD's AM4 CPU socket using Corsair's future upgrade kit. If your cooler has not been included in this list, here is a basic guide which will let you know if your CPU cooler currently supports AMD's AM4 socket. Below is Corsair's clip based AM3/FM2 mount design, this mounting design will support AM4 as AMD has made their new clip-based CPU cooler mounts backwards compatible with older clip based cooler designs. PotNoodleTech Posted February 23, 2017 Posted February 23, 2017 We desperately need competition in the CPU market so I so hope that Ryzen lives up to expectations. Not getting my wallet out yet though as really CPU performance has stagnated so much that my old i7 [email protected] is still good enough to max out most games. I'm not that fussed on having 8 cores 16 threads on a gaming machine as most games struggle to effectively use 4 or 8 threads. Single core performance matters much more and intel have been on top of that game for many years. Will Ryzen change this? I suspect not.

For less money than a Core i7, I can get twice the cores. I'm not a gamer but I can use that many cores at work for my PC as I like to run a lot of VMs for testing purposes. More cores is good For comparison, if you wanted an eight core Intel, you'd either have to spend a grand on a Core i7 Extreme or get a Xeon at 66% of the clock speed. I'm with you on that one. Had a K62 400, then K62 500 followed by lots of Athon varients all the way up to a Barton 3200+. Then Intel left them in the dust.

Can beat ya there - had an AMD K6 266 overclocked to 333 that used to beat out my mates Pentium II 350. Had a Duron 650 overclocked to 900, and Athlon 1200 overclocked to ~1500. All were faster, and cheaper than intel equivalents at the time. Mostly moved to intel after that as AMD never regained the lead.

Then Intel left them in the dust. My first AMD CPU was a K6 200MHz. That got upgraded to a K6 3 400MHz CPU later on which was replaced by a PIII. I then switched between Intel and AMD several times. Intel didn't leave AMD in the dust after Barton as the P4 was still the current architecture. Northwood was (just about) competitive with its contemporary Athlon but Prescott was bloody awful and the equivalent Athlon 64 was much better. Intel didn't really produce competitive CPUs again until the Core 2 series came along.
