You should have KMS available - the preferred method from MS is KMS activation. I believe (read it somewhere recently - cannot remember source) that you can contact Microsoft to request an increase in MAK count, at least when you get close to the top of your count.

FYI - if booting from USB/DVD I think there may be a requirement for "bootia32.efi" as per How can I deploy Windows 8 in UEFI mode using Configuration Manager 2012 ? - Page 2 - Configuration Manager 2012 - http://www.windows-noob.com - Page 2 - discovered this after multiple attempts to boot from USB, then creating a recovery USB from a basic elitepad which I hadn't fiddled with, and checking the differences between that and the image from SCCM standalone. Not sure of a fix, but worked around by copying that bit of directory structure across.

From the looks of that you're already in mysql command line, you need to quit that, then run the command you've entered. the -> is because it's expecting and SQL query ending with a ; and you haven't entered that. (ie from a normal prompt/bash prompt)

I would request clarification from provider - 95 centile is usually over the course of the month, so you may be able to extend either the length of time before squashing or increase the bandwidth to take into account overnight periods, or vary the lengths depending on bursts. If if it 95th centile per 5 min period, then they're onto a winner as they're pretty much putting you on a constrained data amount (like being stuck with 20Mb on a 100Mb bearer) - most firms will charge you extra per Mb over CDR based on 95th centile based on 5 min average readings (which may be what the excess is, which is a much nicer amount than paying £8 for 37.5MB data), so for example, over a month, if I used 21Mb 95th centile rather than 20Mb, I'd pay an excess (which from a brief look at a transit provider, some pricing was £9 per Mb on 10Mb CDR - but that's probably an out of date page). CDR vs 95th %tile - overselling? - that provides a bit of an overview of CDR/95th Centile and how it's all worked out.

Have you got cacti or anything monitoring your network ports? Fortunately internal filtering/caches can help with data - not sure what the palo alto has on it - smoothwall due to having squid onboard will cache data (1.5GB set on mine). If you don't have smoothy and palo alto doesn't cache, may be worth sticking a squid box on your network to cache at least some requests (ie the google/bbc/etc homepage images which will be loaded a quadrillion times a day by teachers and students) and reduce potential data usage to reduce CDR. According to cacti, my 95th-centile is at around 8Mb (100Mb connectivity, limited speed through smoothwall to approx 60Mb, just increased to roughly 80Mb), so 20Mb may be fine, it's not as though your teachers/students will be torrenting/downloading movies!

Hi All, After some advice from a mix of areas. Has anyone provided an internet connection to an adult student for use at home? If so, how? Or does anyone have any ideas how we could do this in the safest way for both the student and ourselves. My thoughts are that it would need to be filtered, but does anyone know how we can provide this? Or could we pay for the connection out of "hardship funds", and the connection be in the student's name - where may we stand legally if there were to be some issue with the connection? Any help appreciated.

Apologies for digging an old thread, but thought I may be able to add some insight into the idea behind this - it comes from the way connectivity is provided within datacentres - you buy a connection from a supplier, and pay per megabit on a 95th percentile basis - the amount you agree to use is termed the committed data rate, above this, you pay an excess charge. To be honest, it doesn't suprise me that most companies won't offer this - they make a lot more money out of saying "you have a 100Mb pipe, you can get 100Mb data at all times" then laugh all the way to the bank when 95th-centile you only use 20Mb. If you have cacti available (or some other long term monitoring) check out what your 95th centile is on your internet connectivity, you'll be surprised how low this is (consider the fact that from say 4pm til 8am the traffic will be very low level, unless you're using online backup facilities). 20Mb does seem quite low on a 1Gb connection, but consider, it's 6.5TB over the course of a month... The excess charges do seem somewhat high, but it is good that they do it in short timespans. It may also when entering into this kind of agreement see if there is the possibility of increasing the CDR you have agreed later in the course of the contract, and closely monitor what your external connectivity is using.

@tom_newton - do your "greatest" minds think that this is a technical possibility to do well, or will the best option (cost/power/processing requirements) be URL filtering (and if so, could you even do deep URL filtering to stop things like google images displaying stuff with safe search turned off without vastly increasing processing requirements). From the looks of it there are significant flaws in TalkTalks implementation (I don't have it so can't test - relying on a year old article so they may have some fixed) - the normal flaws you'd expect from a URL based/basic filter (no deep URL filtering, no header rewriting for forced safesearch etc)

From the looks of Detailed information regardint PXE booting clients across subnets to Deployment Server? you may possibly need to set the WDS as an iphelper address as well (not tried it myself, but as PXE works on DHCP broadcast and the WDS should respond to this it may be the cause). Samsung Surface with PixelSense is another option - I've been looking at these things, but the thing I'm struggling to find is resources to use with them (apps, intereactive software etc) - the tables themselves are pretty easy to find...

To be honest, I can't remember... think I may have run install on server (or install on client, pointing to server drive). It's basically an exe with a mdb, so the whole program folder can sit on a share.

We used AB tutor before and liked it, but had some issues in RDS environment. Currently using Impero, but echo the pricing and features comment. Renewal figure seems to be picked out of the air at random - claiming it's to fund integration of GFI software... but we don't want or need those aspects so why do we have to pay for them?!

According to that, ask them for a break down in the £5k price (ie what aspect of it is the hardware and what is the cost of software migration) - then either look elsewhere for hardware or do a virtual install - and tell them that you'll be paying only what has been quoted for software migration, and if they have an issue you can discuss anti competitive behaviour with them .

Used them a number of times - no major issues. May be worth seeing if they have any refurb stock - they can usually do a good price on this. Or contact them to see if they can do better educational pricing. Cheers Will

I'd be tempted to do some research with the hole in the ground with wires... see if you can find out where the wires run to in the building they come out in - if it's an electrical DB then it should state what feeds it and you may be able to find a route back. May be worth trying that before putting fibre in what sounds like a high traffic area and not fully encased.

How far is the gap? Could you get a suitable height and do a steel tension wire to cable tie to?

When you are testing and run the file, does it run? If so, check the temp folder in appdata on the user you're testing with. If this is the case, I'd put a software restriction in place for c:\users\*\appdata\local\temp\*.exe (which I think is one we have in place here) Cheers Will
