MS Teams - Cant Create Class Notebook "Something Went Wrong"
stumot posted a topic in Cloud Services
Afternoon All In years gone by I have had no issue creating MS Teams groups from powershell using Connect-MicrosoftTeams, however it appears that method is now deprecated and instead of using the Teams module for powershell, Teams should now be created in bulk using the Connect-MSGraph module for powershell (information that would of been useful to me last week!) as whilst the teams do end up being created when I run my powershell script, the OneNote class notebook is not automatically created and when I try to create it manually, I get stuck in a loop of "oops something went wrong" every time I have the option to create the class notebook. The proper solution to this problem would be to delete the groups generated via the old method and create new ones using the new method, however I didnt feel like remaking those groups again at such a busy time of year for us, luckily someone has come up with a nice workaround for this issue which I have linked below: Repair-Class-teams/Repair-Teams-Notebook.ps1 at e1b6f0986c2ded9c0e2dbdfff5860fbb233e8487 · veltwerk/Repair-Class-teams · GitHub Save the powershell document and follow the steps in the readme file and it should fix any teams that have errors like mine, its saved me a lot of hassle today and hopefully it will help others too when staff inevitably come to them with their MS Teams and OneNote woes! Thanks for reading -
I rang them earlier today and they confirmed it was an issue on their end, supposedly they were going to force a manual sync for us but I have not had a response in the last 4+ hours Not ideal to say the least

We've just moved off of the Every Helpdesk, the main issue I have had with it is that its been designed as an asset management system first and the Helpdesk section is sort of an afterthought, it works ok but its not really worth paying for on its own as you could use something like Spiceworks for free, one key feature we lost when we moved from our old solution to Every was the Email to ticket function which, given that is hard enough getting staff to send an email to the helpdesk address instead of my staff one, resulted on a lot of tickets not getting logged Its not all bad, one good feature we used was the ability to have multiple helpdesks for different departments which worked well, but yeah there's definitely better options out there Hope this helps

Just to update but after over a year of trial and error with this eventually we decided to Virtualise this software using a VirtualBox VM with local restrictions on it, its not ideal but works much more smoothly as it seems the software doesn't play nice with UAC and requires access to local folders ( it does still ask regularly for activation but this only takes a minute per session so its a sacrifice the department are willing to make) its also worth noting that this is deployed on a relatively small number of machine so its likely not the best solution for IT suites of 30+ computers but if anyone wants some advice on setting it up this way please let me know

Afternoon All, Over the past year some of our staff have been using OneNote to send students work, at one point they were using the Office 2021 version but found that clunky so switched to the Built in Windows 10 App version, however lately they inform me that the distribution from their teacher PCs to the Students has been patchy, some kids get the workbook, some don't or some receive it way after the lesson is over, I have done some basic troubleshooting (reinstalling the app, re-imaging the pc etc) but its not helped, I have looked online and the consensus seems to be that distribution through the app is hit and miss in general, I just wanted to ask if this was anyone else's experience at all? Please let me know Cheers

School emergency alert recommendations
stumot replied to yjgygyufgvfghfh's topic in Network and Classroom Management
So Basically via the gpo files policy we deploy some batch files and a video to a folder "c:\program files\Lockdown" the video is just a PowerPoint that's looped at 30 minutes, we then call two other batch files via one batch file as it saves running the command twice, we call them via the impero console "run/website files" command The first batch file just basically calls the other two, batch files do the following: 1. displayswitch.exe /clone <- this is for the teachers who use extend, sets it back to duplicate so that they definitely see the message, then once the screen is duplicated the video is then played via VLC 2. c:\Program Files\VideoLAN\VLC\vlc.exe" "C:\PROGRAM FILES\LOCKDOWN\Lockdown.mp4" --loop --fullscreen That's all really, as long as the files are in the right place and accessible it should work, again it does the job for us but cant do the same as a lot of paid solutions which have all the bells and whistles I believe if you wanted to go one step further with this you could look into installing something like NirCMD which would enable you to set the volume via command line to ensure that the message his heard on muted machines Hope this is of some use, if you have any more questions just let me know -
School emergency alert recommendations
stumot replied to yjgygyufgvfghfh's topic in Network and Classroom Management
If your after a basic alert system, you could do as we have done and put some batch files on all the school computers that when called via PowerShell or impero bring up a full screen video of either a lockdown or fire message, its a bit cheap and nasty but it does the job and its working for us so far -
Morning all We've recently gone vanilla from CC4 and have been using the free trial of PDQ, we now wish to purchase the full license which has been quoted as roughly a grand and a half, so I just wondered does that sound a bit high or is it what most schools pay for the software? The intention here would be to pay for one years use and then cancel if we no longer needed the full features of the program Any input on what pricing usually is for this would be greatly appreciated

Afternoon All With summer coming up I was looking to bench test our machines, however the software we use for doing so is an ISO and unfortunately we currently only have a WDS server set up for imaging, so I wondered if anyone else had a solution for booting ISO images over PXE that aren't wim files? Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated

Level 4 apprenticeship course providers
stumot replied to jslate1980's topic in Courses and Training
Hi Jon I am an Assistant Network Manager in my current role but aside from the odd vlan setup now and again and troubleshooting connectivity on existing switches most of my work doesn't involve a large amount of issues relating to networking, I think they just prefer you to set networking tasks for your apprentice and document them, but they don't seem to define what "network tasks" constitute so I believe there may be some wiggle room there, it may be worth speaking to them again and just seeing if there's a way it can be incorporated as the course seems worth it so far. Hope this helps! -
Level 4 apprenticeship course providers
stumot replied to jslate1980's topic in Courses and Training
Hi Jon I am currently on a level 4 course with Baltic apprenticeships, its an 18-24 month course but appears to be worth it so far, its all done via online adobe connect classes if that's of any interest. It doesn't require much onsite requirements other than completing a learning diary of apprenticeship related work that's been done on site Develop Your Staff - Network Engineer Apprenticeship Course (balticapprenticeships.com) Its also funded by the apprenticeship levy which is appealing to employers Hope you find a course that fits the bill -
Morning All, I wanted to ask what free (or one off license cost) wake on LAN software are you all currently using? We are moving away from RM but trying to keep what features we can and this is a rather useful one Any recommendations would be much appreciated Thank you

Intune iPads - Is there any way to turn off the passcode requirement?
stumot replied to stumot's topic in Cloud Services
Cheers for confirming, After doing some googling since posting I realise now its just apple forcing the passcode on shared devices, also thanks for mentioning 1:1 devices as this is definitely something I will look into- 2 replies

Morning All I have recently federated our Azure AD and our Apple School Manager, allowing for users to sign in with their AD credentials, however when a user signs in it appears to ask them to set up a passcode, adding extra time to the sign in process, is there any way to disable this at all as I have looked in the Endpoint manager templates and turned off passcode adding and modification but still when a user signs in it still asks them to set one up, also it goes through the language selection setup process which I would like to disable as well... Any tips or pointers would be greatly appreciated Cheers

My experience with Cubase 12 is that its clearly not ready for use in an education setting with multiple user profiles at this time, as we have been testing it and essentially every user that logs in needs to log into the the licensed mysteinberg account and activate the software once per profile, I have also checked for any reg keys/appdata folders that might save this step but no luck so far, when speaking to steinberg support about this they just advise using the older versions of cubase as they are supported in an education environment and currently the latest one isn't. So in summary if your on the older version and using dongles for licensing you might wanna stick with those until the company that makes the software officially says that cubase 12 can be used in an educational environment Hope this helps

Also just want to say thanks to all who've replied to this thread, I think we will end up going HP but next time around it may be stone, its mainly just to match other kit on site and also the fact that we aren't able to see any Stone AIO PCs before purchasing and we don't want to buy blind, again thanks for all your replies

They don't seem to advertise them on the website but I think that's because they aren't in stock yet, if you ring them up then they will let you know pricing for them Hope that clears things up

Thanks for letting me know, is this just due to build quality issues?

Afternoon all, Just wanted to ask if anyone on here has any hands on experience with recent Stone AIO pcs, as we are thinking of purchasing some over HP due to the processor spec being better value for money, however I am concerned that the build quality might pale in comparison to HP Aios, if anyone has some of these types of machine please can you let me know if they are of decent build and if they are good value for money, as parts wise they seem that way but we haven't purchased from stone in a while and don't want to go down in terms of build quality Any feedback would be greatly appreciated

Just wanted to say thank you jthompson as your notes on the applocker rules saved me some time! I have found that much like with the original client you can get away with installing the application as normal and then copying the files to C:\program files and it runs fine from there as well, the only thing that's important to know if you do start moving the installed files from there normal appdata-ey location, is that you may encounter the error "this url cannot be accessed restart the surpass viewer and try again" that's due to the software not communicating with the proxy server (in our case smoothwall) so you may need to do an nslookup of the website (viewer.surpass.com) and create a rule to pass the two ip addresses through without inspection Hopefully this helps anyone else who has the miserable task of installing this software!

Nice work, I was thinking of putting the folder in c:\ but my colleague advised to keep it simple and put it in program files instead, as long as the account has write permissions to all folders and subfolders for the surpass install instance I dont think it should matter whereabouts it lives just so long as it can write, thanks for sharing, I tried with Orca myself but had trouble getting it to accept a new install directory, glad to see yours has worked properly for you

UPDATE: I have now managed to fix this by using a power shell script to copy the files from c:\users\public\surpass to program files instead, it must have been conflicting with our software restrictions, if anyone else has this issue and wants to try this solution please let me know and I can post a copy of the PS script used for this (even if its not recommended by WJEC)

Morning All Unfortunately WJEC still insist on delivering exams through their naff software, and as usual its stuck in an update loop, has anyone ever found a definitive fix for this? I have tried so far - putting proxy settings into the "configfiles" folder, changing the shortcut, changing the install location and checking permissions, this has helped on some machines but I haven't got a "fix all" solution. Any help would be much appreciated

I've been looking into not showing the last logged in user for Intune and have managed to locate the setting for this, its in the settings catalogue -> Local Policies Security Options -> interactive logon do not display last signed in Just in case you want to disable shared pc mode

UPDATE: I now have a workaround for this, it involves forcing the SMARTBOARDSERVICE to open and restart as soon as it closes, I have set the following to run as a log on script and included an "if exist" command in there so it doesn't bring up error messages on machines without the software, if anyone wants to use it please copy and paste the text below into a notepad document and save as a .bat file: @echo offIF NOT EXIST "C:\Program Files (x86)\SMART Technologies\Education Software\Notebook.exe" goto exit:Restartstart "Smartboardservice" /wait "c:\Program Files (x86)\SMART Technologies\Education Software\smartboardservice.exe" -dgoto Restartexit
