  1. Yep, turned out to be some setting that only produced the first 100 results or something like that. Yes you're right I had no training, but equally never had any training on SIMS. I'm not saying Bromcom is terrible and SIMS was the easiest thing ever to use. Just found SIMS a bit easier to use to create reports, which is pretty much all I've ever used either for. As others have said here training is key, from my experience initial training may well have been provided when installed, but what happens for new staff who arrive after? Now the market is shifting from SIMS having a massive majority to a wider split over several vendors, more staff come through the doors with only experience of a different system.
  2. I'd just pull the power cable out the back of the switch and plug it into the new one. Personally I don't really see the need to isolate everything to unplug a IEC lead. I'd have thought the PDU would either have a 13A plug, IEC connector C13 or C16 for connecting to a UPS, or be wired directly into a fused spur. Suppose a commando connector is also an option but probably overkill for a small PDU like that.
  3. I suppose I see why you say that, but after spending ages trying to figure out how to get Bromcom to spit out a basic report, the novelty of a pretty GUI wore off quite quickly. Something that I'd worked out how to do in SIMS in a couple of mins. (Only really started to use SIMS about 2 years ago, before that provided it opened alright that was about as far as I got) I do tend to feel like I'm using the web based version of excel rather than the desktop version, the web one solves half the problems people moan at me every day about but just doesn't quite 'work' as well as the desktop version.   4. The main site we support is with Bromcom, I have to say I'm not a big fan, just feels clunky and just find the interface a bit confusing. I miss the usability of SIMS just not the constant pain of updates. That said I think SIMS has had its time and I wouldn't suggest putting it in a new school now, or switching to it. By the sounds of it they are developing web based components now that talk back to the same old server (which sounds exactly what PARS was 5 years ago) We've got one other customer on hosted SIMS, which while it's hands off for us, I'm not sure its a great experience from them, feels very much like Server 2012 and RDS
  5. I'm sure I've seen some lenses start to yellow in some older installs I've seen. UV exposure from the sun would be my guess.
  6. The Aruba would be my preference, we've got 84 of the AP505s at once of our sites with 2930M switches. Rock solid. We don't have Aruba Central at this one, just don't need it. Also have a site with about 30 of the Unifi U6 Pros, which do the job at the end of the day. That said the price difference between the 505s and the U6 pros is less than you think. (provided you go to a propper supplier)
  7. I just have it as an Application in SCCM, just deploys nicely. We did have issues getting it setup, but that turned out to be Pearson messing up the centre number.
  8. I'd say go for the U6 Pros if you need WiFi 6.
  9. They can run standalone, UISP just gives you centralised management and monitoring for multiple links. I've worked with the Ubiquiti point to point gear before, it's solid kit. 60Ghz gives you better performance, provided you have pretty much perfect line of sight.
  10. So I've ordered a Sharp GP2Y10 sensor £6 ish, which detects particulate (dust) matter and have got it working with an Arduino, same with the SGP30 VOC sensor and a DHT22 for temp / humidity. The Sharp sensor seems quite sensitive, I'd have thought it would quite easily pick up someone vaping in a cubicle. The school I work in has floor to ceiling cubicles so would probably need sensor hardware in each cubicle. If the Sharp isn't good enough the next best option appears to be the units with fans to draw in air, I prefer the passive option if possible. Thinking of using one ethernet node per room and a string of something like Pro Minis on a serial bus talking back to the ethernet device. Main focus is getting the detection right, then to worry about networking and notification options.

  12. Normally we'd set the core to have the lowest bridge ID, I usually set to 8192. That said even with them all at the same priority, the root will be elected based on MAC address / Switch age. Setting the cores bridge ID lower would probably be a good start. With all that said we've had a lot of issues over the years with this series of switches and instability, can't believe Cisco ever put their name to them.
  13. At the moment just connected to an Arduino and printed the sensor output out the serial port, just to have a play. The idea was to develop something like the Verkada, just never got any further. Now it seems there's some interest from others I might have another go at it.
  14. Looking at the data sheet It has a VOC sensor, Particulate matter sensor, Motion, Temp and Humidity sensor and Noise. Also has some very handy specs of the sensors it's using. I wouldn't have thought it would be all that difficult with that set of sensors to get a good idea of vaping. Just need to gather some data!
  15. Also thought about giving this ago, ended up buying some SGP30 sensors from Pimironi and got them working quite quickly. I'm just not quite sure how you'd go about identifying vapes over other substances. I'm sure the vapes must be full of VOCs, but not sure what else would trigger it. Maybe PM2.5 is a better way of doing it, the problem we have is that the students are already spraying deodorant into the smoke detectors in the toilet and I'm not sure how well they'd hold up to it. Did think about putting the sensor into the extraction vent in each cubicle, I thought that might give it a better chance of detecting and protect it from vandalism a bit?
  16. We've got a pair of ADJ Encore Profile 1000 Colours, provided you can get easy access to move / focus them then they're great for spots - Around £600. Then I'd put some of those Showtec pars or similar for flood colour.
  17. I generally tend to class the example you have given as 'pixel' type lights mode for looking directly at rather than a flood, as there quite diffused. I'd suggest something like this - Chauvet 4Bar if you're after something in the same sort of package as that one. With 20 metres of distance you would get quite a lot of spread on the light output, so the further forward you can get it the better really. They have 2 channel modes - 3 and 15 channels. 3 Just gives you RGB for all 4 lights at once, 15 gives you individual control + some other effects, so just depends on your desk. For something simple it's probably fine, to make it better I'd be looking at higher wattage LED pars mounted separately on a T-Bar, but that would likely add setup time, cost and be more difficult to store. Tend to agree with @Warwick_Tech about the Unifi cameras, I used to work at a site with around 100 cameras on the video platform, while it was easy to use always felt very much like it was a beta product that never really got finalised. Then protect came along but had capacity limitations initially, leading to all the cameras being replaced with HIK. I have used protect since and think it's quite a good solution for a couple of cameras. I've tried Synology's surveillance station out and was quite happy with it, it's just needs licensing. Most of our customers use Hikvision now, I have to say it generally just works, it's affordable and the image quality is great. We've also installed the Hanwha system for someone who couldn't have Hikvision, but it was significantly more expensive and the image quality wasn't really as good. If there's a security concern regarding HIK I've suggested using their cameras with Synology and isolating the network that the cameras sit on before.
  19. Might be wrong about this but in the BIOS under Settings - General - Boot Sequence. Does USB NIC (IPV4) show up under Windows Boot Manager? Other things to check: Settings - General - Advanced boot Options - Enable UEFI Network Stack If that still doesn't work my guess is the adapter you have isn't compatible.   20. These are quite fussy with USB network adapters, provided the BIOS settings are correct it should give you the option to PXE boot from USB network adapter. We've found they don't work with the Microsoft Surface adapters, but do with an Anker USB C one, that then has a converter on to USB A I'll check what's set on the BIOS for one I've got in the office
  21. I would be cautious about planning for the retirement of the WiFi solution, I'd expect Assa Abloy locks for example to long outlive the lifespan of the access points. It may limit your options when it comes to replacement.
  22. I've never used that functionality, however it does seem to be available in the instant mode which we tend to use now. There's an IOT section in the document here giving some config examples. The BLE feature is probably more interesting to me than Zigbee at the moment, I've had the idea of sticking BLE tags onto laptop trolleys then tracking where they are based on the nearest AP. I've got some Mikrotik tags and might see if I can get it going with a spare AP I've got at home. One of the Mikrotik tags has a G sensor in it, suppose it could send me an email if the laptop trolley goes flying down the stairs Aruba seem to mention Assa Abloy locks in their guides quite a bit.
  23. Possibly, however we have had many sites with flat networks that experienced call quality issues, Jitter - dropped calls e.t.c. Implementing VLANS / QoS has resolved this in all cases. I suppose it really depends on the number of clients on the network and just how much traffic there is, a small primary would probably not notice.

  25. Yes, We've done this with NET2 Before, two readers spaced apart connected to one ACU. The readers were mounted onto Laser Cut / Engraved acrylic with IN engraved onto one and OUT on the other. I know of a site that used the muster point function to check people out in the event of a fire, special considerations went into the server for this for obvious reasons.
