Might be some debate from people around this, but so far it's helped us every time we've had to visit after an incident. Make sure time synchronisation is setup correctly & working (we keep visiting clusters setup by some providers who should know better, where time synchronisation doesn't work / wasn't configured correctly. One Ended in complete failure of the cluster, corrupted volumes, VMs not booting, trust relationship issues between hosts.)

Best practice is that you break up into smaller volumes, the number of volumes should be a multiple of the number of nodes in the cluster. We have had to support a customer that had a volume fail in their S2D cluster in the past. The disks in that volume had to be restored. (the whole cluster actually needed rebuilding, but that's another story) In your case I would suggest a minimum of two volumes for storing your VHDs

We've done a solar install before using Mikrotik P2P kit and a Hik IP camera. Solar setup with a charge controller and some batteries powers the camera and P2P. Normally we use the Ubiquiti links but some of the Mikrotik units support 12V input rather than the 24V that most of the Ubiquiti units use which saves stepping the voltage up.

School I worked with previously bought iris, to be honest I think an iPad and a tripod stand with the camera app would have done pretty much the same job. Then just upload the recordings to SharePoint / OneDrive.

I'd put one in for your servers and the other to feed the other cabinet, I'd split the server PSUs (Assuming you can survive on 2 PSUs in the VRTX) between mains and the UPS. So should the UPS fail the server still has power. We had an APC unit fail a few months ago which knocked everything out.

For our main site, 1G leased line with a FTTP Backup connection Smoothwall S10 providing filtering & firewall Other sites we tend to use a Mikrotik upstream of the Smoothwall which provides the firewall.

My guess is it's a purely a manual process, and when a situation happens everyone is busy working on resolving to update the status page. But maybe we've all made enough noise about it and from now on the page will be updated. If so fair play to Bromcom

Generally try to avoid it.

We did have an APC unit fail a couple of months back. It was replaced under warranty. But failed removing power from the protected loads, fault code displayed on the LCD. I'm quite surprised they don't have a relay in that would bypass the inverter and connect it straight to mains if a failure like this occurred. Definitely made the case for us that we never have both legs plugged into the same UPS. One straight into the mains or a separate UPS.

Only APC as well, have had some experience with Dell UPSs (rebadged APC) going bang with some magic smoke. Also had a domestic APC one that let out magic smoke about 10 years ago that I threw out the window before it burned the house down

I'd get your school signed up to Apple School Manager before doing anything else, as it can take a few days to get approved and going. Once that's done work with a decent supplier that is familiar with schools, KRCS are quite good, they can get the serial numbers registered with your Apple School Manager before delivery. Once you have that and your MDM setup in theory all you have to do is take them out the box and they'll set themselves up (usually).

From memory the 2530 series didn't have 10G uplink ports, (I think one version did but didn't exist for very long, as the 2540 filled that gap) I suspect installing a 10G SFP+ would work however you would get no benefit from doing so as the ports are only 1Gbps. No config change would be required. **Update, a few 10G models did exist, never come across any actually in the field. I'd double check your J number first to be sure.

Also Bromcom's status page is useless not the biggest issue in the world but it is irritating.e.g. Problem with reporting / DMS server affecting multiple schools, no issue on status page - All systems operational. So had to phone and check. Unfortunately no experience with Arbor yet, but looking forward to seeing it at some point.

For storage we have a few shelves with about 30 A4 paper boxes on. Not ideal but it didn't cost anything.

I'd also really want something with ILO / IDRAC or similar. We are mostly doing remote support though, so might not be as bigger problem if you have staff on site 5 days a week. Just handy if you lose connection for whatever reason. Otherwise a pair of those PCs, with a DHCP failover on? Maybe a PI KVM or similar to emulate ILO functionality?

Hi, As of the last time I tested this I found the process no longer worked. I suspect that Microsoft have released a new version that has 'fixed' this loophole. It did also rely on already having admin access to the OS running on the system, so wouldn't make any difference if you can't get into the OS in the first place.

Personally I would look at something like a site to site vpn. Then something like hyper backup on synology which would replicate the 'primary' nas to the secondary offsite nas. Or if using Veeam, a backup copy job to the off-site storage.

Not sure if anyone else is having issues today, are user base can't download documents from student areas of Bromcom. Bromcom appears to be aware of the issue, however the status page has nothing on it.

Mosyle has always done what we've needed it to over the years. One of our schools has had a 5 year plan with Meraki not sure yet if it will just be renewed or moved to Mosyle (probably). Meraki is quite good, but doesn't really do anything for us that really stands out above and beyond Mosyle. I do miss the old Mosyle interface, new one I'm not a massive fan of.

With our customers we tend to go for an FTTP connection. Starlink could be an option though, especially if getting connectivity in general is difficult in your area.

I'd have thought if you ask the upstream provider they can provide you with a larger address space. The previous companies we've worked with that use Fortigate have multiple VDOMs so can actually reuse the same range of internal addresses with different customers. I would hazard a guess this is also what the LA you're with is doing.

If you were to right out the subnet mask in binary form and count up the 1s then you get that value. just easier than writing 255.255.255.0 a million times - that mask would be /24 e.g. 255. 11111111. I would suggest you need a larger allocation of IPs if you're going to do this. with 1000 addresses you could only fit 3 /24 subnets (VLANS in) ok some may not need to be that big Happy to send you our one of our VLAN / Subnet spreadsheets which shows how we do our designs, if you drop me a DM.

32A socket would be much better, RCD protection is a must especially if it's going outdoors. The 32A socket also helps you ensure it gets used as designed, rather than in some odd way that hadn't been expected.

We've been very impressed with the Hisense boards, they've come in much cheaper than a lot of the competition and so far have all been great. Most staff just mirror to the board, in one of our secondaries with just Promethean ActivPanels we just have one member of staff that likes Activinspire and uses it but nobody else does.
