  1. Time to Panic buy Worcester sauce and Worcester sauce flavoured crisps.
  2. Hi tom I had fun wrestling with Smoothwall certificates and iPads. Just a thought, as this sum times clears up some browser issues on iPads. Clear the cache in safari and restart safari. Might work, might not.
  3. Hi all I have 50% of a teams room setup (Logitech Meetup & Logitech Tap) and I am waiting for a Lenovo teams room PC (Due October 4th). I was wondering while I am waiting, others, Teaching staff, will be banging on my door wondering why they can't use the Teams room. Can I setup another PC that I have sitting round as the temporary Team Room PC? Or a helpful website telling how to setup a random PC as a teams room PC.
  4. Our finance managers PC once in a while has the top bar of applications missing. Programs such as Acrobat & Google chrome. They have a two screen setup using an intel inboard GPU, rather than a Graphics card. Restarting the video buffer with SHIFT + CTRL+ WIN + B worked to fix the issue this morning. I was wondering would a proper graphics card solve the issue out right or is this a weird windows bug.
  5. I having this issue on a Synology RS618 NAS. I posted a support ticket in their system. They, so far, have been as helpful as a chocolate tea pot. Their last communication they ask me to create a test folder with txt, doc, pages file and docx documents to see if this was happening with every type of file. I managed to trigger the bug by using AFP and MS word. Then I noticed if I copied the file off the server on to my desktop. the file became read write again, saved some changes, then moved the file back to the server. over wrote the original file, the file was then read write again. For me the bug maybe with AFP (nope apple has not deprecated so far) and MS word (any version) creating temp files with read only bugs, which become the new file when saved. Temp files / folders seem to be culprits here. I will still need to do some testing to see if the bug returns or workaround solves it in the short term.
  6. Our headteacher had an email about the project back in feb. You might want to check with them or check the junk mail folder.
  7. Tried that and they did not work with Google LDAP. Tried everything still did not work. Not sure how legal OpenCore patcher is.
  8. Now waiting on a site survey and start date and hardware order, o, and, three day left of the term.
  9. I have moved some of our Mac's over to Google LDAP, the only draw back, is that it works on OSX 10.15 and above. Great if you have new Macs. Bad if you still have old Mac's that only run 10.13, like me. boo.
  10. Sorry, I was not sure if I had made a forum post about this bug or not. Thanks for reminding me. I had tested this issue across three different computers and a separate server. What I discovered is across SMB mapped drives the problem pops its head up on a Mac running MS Word 16.66.7 under OSX 10.13. Both the Mac and windows 10 computer with latest MS word, were informed the file was read only. When I reconnected to the file on the OSX 10.13 computer through apple AFP networking protocol, then resaved the file, the read error disappeared. Hence why I am thinking the bug might have something to do with SMB and AFP, but if MS word is the problem. Well, I will have to regularly reset the permissions on the server. I will have a look at the above links.
  11. Hi All I am not sure if this is a bug in SMB and APF networking or Microsoft Word. Staff have been reporting word docx that magically change their permissions after someone has open and saved the file. The permissions on the NAS Synology drive are correct for everyone read and write etc... But once a teacher edits a file and saves, they become read only to everyone, including the editor. Also I am talking Macs running at least three different versions of MS word. I usually change the permissions in the NAS drive then staff can edit again. Which is a pain. The newest version of MS word does not seem to be affected by the bug, just earlier versions. I have asked support at Synology to look at the NAS to see if the NAS is the culprit. But my tests seem to point to MS Word. I have tested using SMB and AFP to see if there is an issue there. My results showed no real networking bug to speak of.
  12. Hello all Our business manager has 4 accounts on their outlook, and for some reason the licence account for 365 keeps changing to a different non-licensed account. Which created a bug were it keeps telling the user the account is being managed by another device. Which is true for at least 2 of the accounts, which are on two other computers. those computers (Mac) are not showing this issue. I think this is just a bug with this version of office and an update should solve the problem also an OS update as well. Just wondering if anyone else has experienced this issue? I have used a reset software to reset the licence and re-licence again, which seems to have solved the problem for the moment.
  13. Another idea, open Utilities / Activity Monitor and set it to CPU, try a restart and see if a running program crashes or has red writing next to the program. Alternative use "top" in terminal and it should show everything running and also might show a programming crashing. It does show programs sleeping and programs stuck, so it might show a program not responding.
  14. Use to have a login / logout script that course a similar issue requiring a force shutdown / reboot. Have you checked in Utilities / Console for crash logs or just logs in general. Dose the Mac after reboot have a pop-up saying the Mac was restarted before a program ended, or something similar? You could boot into safe mode and see if the issue returns. How to boot into safe mode https://support.apple.com/en-gb/guide/mac-help/mh21245/mac You could rebuild and install MDM and anti-virus, one at a time to see what might be coursing the issue.
  15. 3rd vote for Mosyle. can be a bit slow at times, but, dose the job very well.
  16. iPads set up in shared mode, have a little flaw. it's kinda the same with PC / Macs. the iPads use a percentage of the storage for each user, all quite normal, the issue happens when you only have iPads with 16GB of storage. with 16GB it allocates something like 1500MB of storage to each user or less. For Me I ended up with staff wondering why the iPad told the support staff that the iPad was full and when I did some investigation I discovered the storage allocation for iPads with 16GB all the way up to 256GB which would be the best for a shared iPads. But, I only learned that when I had setup 10 shared iPads with 16GB of storage. Back to the who's using the iPad situation. Smoothwall's iPad browser app didn't ask for a user for me just the serial code. Also the reporting did not seem to go back to our on premises system just in the cloud. Also the cloud system didn't show me any alerts or warning, which was not very handy.
  17. Just wondering, how everyone has solved the issues of knowing who is using the iPad at any one time / who's using the internet on the iPad? I only ask as we have both staff used iPads for an SEND recording app called Earwig; and iPads used by pupils. the issue I find is anyone can just open the iPad and start surfing and I don't know if its a member of staff or a learner. Without pushing them to a proxy on our Smoothwall, forcing them to login. I am not sure what else I can do? Can smoothwall help me with this? @tom_newton
  18. A lovely tribute to Glenda Jackson in the guardian. https://www.theguardian.com/stage/gallery/2023/jun/15/glenda-jackson-a-life-in-pictures
  19. We have a Newline touchscreen and some BenQ touchscreens, and the most regular update on both screens has been the remote screen / airplay software. The airplay software might need an update.
  20. I have setup a Xerox c316 MFP printer to scan to email. Every time I try, I get an error / Scan Log message: Primary SMTP Gateway : SMTP.Gmail.com Connection Failure : <530> Connection Error Mail server response:: 530-5.7.0 Authentication Required. Google says that the error list says 530, "5.7.0", Must issue a STARTTLS command first. I have put all the setting correct ( well I think I have) in the email setting in the web interface. I have tested the SMPT setting and it say all is OK. But, it's not, as stated by the error message / scan log above.
  21. I have been given from Mosyle, Has technology, tech minder, hi-impact.co.uk, mint-group.co.uk
  22. I have found a reboot of the device sometime sets the MDM process off. I guess the usuals, check the WIFI, Check ethernet, Check to see if any of the management Mobile policies have been downloaded to the MacBook. Check that you are installing the apps on the correct MacBook, done that before. Did you install the enrolling MDM profile remotely, if you did you might need to allow it on the machine as a local user.
  23. We use mainly Mac at this school. Our teachers have a mixture of MacBook Air's and two MacBook Pro's. The RAM installed on these devices range from 2GB - 4GB - 8GB. The MacBook Airs with 2GB & 4GB struggle to run OSX Monetary OSX 12 and beachball. This is due in part to the lack of RAM and staff opening and running far too many apps at once. Even Macs with 8GB of RAM struggle and Beachball now and again, due to RAM and running too many programs at once. Logic Pro would run, but once it loads plugins and music stems, I would guess the RAM would be full and it would start using the virtual memory (Swap RAM). Swap RAM used the SSD for memory and as SSD have a limited life span the more swap used the more the likely the SSD could fail. I stress could fail. Or run fine for years. However over time Apple will releases newer versions of their OS that will require more RAM to run and you will be left behind. If you can buy 1 less and add 16GB on all the iMacs, then I would. In fact I am looking to get machines with no less than 16GB of RAM when buying new or refurbish Macs.
  24. Hello all I have had reports from staff that office 365 (Word) on Mac, when opening a file off our a network drive, has this error message. Usually clicking duplicate does nothing. I am thinking it's either word or the Synology NAS. But, as I tested it on another Server, shared over SMB and the issue persists, I am thinking is MS Word. My Mac running Ventura does not seem to be affected. But, that said, I do keep my computer up-to-date, while other don't. Copying the file off the network drive and opening on the local computer seem fine with no error message. Anyone have any ideas?
  25. Back in the deep dark past, I set up a Local network streaming radio station using Icecast https://icecast.org/ I had it running on one of those all in one Mini PC's on Windows 7. Alternatively you could try Jellyfin and build a jellyfin server https://jellyfin.org/. Both can be accessed on a web browser or on program specific software (jellyfin player). I have a jellyfin server running at home for streaming my dvd and music collection. As the software requires account to access the media, it would keep the un-invited out of the server. As I am sure there will be lots of "why do they, get to listen to music and I can't?" questions from other pupils. The server tell you who login and from what device or software, which is handy.
