Problem - large school shares a site with both a primary school, a Leisure Centre, FE College Building, Fire Station and a Youth Club. The Crescent Road that all this is sited on is open to public access 24 / 7. Especially at drop off and pick up times the Road is very congested and idiot drivers both park on pavements (forcing our kids to walk in the road) and double yellows which often makes Coach access chaotic. The Road has double yellows but both Old Bill and Council Enforcement (Traffic Wardens as we used to know em!) claim they have no enforcement powers. Have any other schools had the same sort of issue and if so how have they sorted it?

Anyone got a solution for attendance registration of sixth form students who are authorised absentees for either the 1st or 5th period of the day so they don't reflect badly on attendance stats?

I want to put a link from my a module - meals at school on the Front Page to another page. Currently to change the weekly menu I have to mess about in the module, what I want to do is put a link to the other page which will be easier to drop the weekly menus into. Can any of you Joomla experts point this novice in the direction of an answer please.

My Windows Server 2003 R2 has a 12GB OS partition! I want to move the swap file to free up a bit of space, is there any pitfall I should be aware of. I presume I just follow the Server 2000 procedure in: Moving the Windows Default Paging and Spool File What size would be optimum to set the new file to on the D: drive?

My Year 3 Teacher is currently on a Science module and tells me that the Hamilton Trust Website talks about putting Text into a Spiral - if you have the software that can do it - anyone got a clue about the software they might be referring to?

Thanks Sukh, It's 2008. Examining further the DH demonstrated to me in his Windows 7 Explorer that by conducting a search on any name - he used his own, resulted in all documents for that given person being displayed and accessible. That's all documents not only on the server but also on client PCs. Gulp! Checking the permissions on the server folder I found they had been altered. Looks like one of our little darlings has been 'active' - got a fair idea which one it was and he is under investigation. Hopefully I will be back with an update on the flaw he found that gave access - obviously having view of an Administrator password being the first thought. Server now off LAN and the chap who installed it (this guy is a Server Wizard and I know he set it up right in the first place and has the in depth experience to sort it) is working on fixing the problem first thing on Monday.

My teachers now have video cameras and yesterday I was asked if I could set up a shared folder. I did this on the \\curriculum\users$\staff\video clips folder and through Group Policy pushed out an icon for it to staff desktops. The deputy Head tells me today that this has worked but when the folder is open in Explorer he has found that (logged on as any member of staff) by deleting video clips from the end of the bar and replacing it with a given staff members name it allows full access to that staff members home folders on the server. I'm thinking I need to have the video clips folder set up on the normal share instead and change the path on Group Policy to point to it but what can I do to tighten down so that only the correct staff have access to their individual folders please.

There you go, got me started on my pet hate, the BBC Breakfast Programme; it's the main 2 female presenters that get my goat, one seems to spend most her time smiling to the camera, inappropriately giggling and the other does that as well but also persistently cuts across the male presenters when they are talking. And why is it that the weather girl seems to think it's to the two presenters that she is giving the forecast:rolleyes: Yes I know I don't have to watch it and often I don't but apart from that irritation and the fact FOOTBALL seems to be an item of news that can sometimes be yapped about for 10 minutes the rest of the content is pretty good:)

I'm trying to find out from the lass what the problem was with Alice. Looking at Adobe I see 2 things. First there's an online store for Educational use with pretty massive discounts but it seems to be North American only? Secondly there is a trial version of Flash but nothing about how long the trial period is and I suspect that once signed up it may be a case of frequent sales calls?

I see a few posters favour the brute force method of HD destruction - my Deputy Head also is keen that we dispose of our back-load of disks this way - in fact I think he is thinking of drilling through the cases of each in a couple of places! If we did this then what's the recognised method of disposal of the old disk in compliance with DPA and WEEE?

We have a couple of students who want to enter the UK Schools Computer Animation Competition, which is apparently running using the following software: Alice - keeps crashing. Scratch - students feel it's limited. Flash - we only have the Flash reader apparently there is a free month trial of the full version? Serif Draw Plus - apparently costs £80. No money in the budget. Anyone any experience or suggestions on this please.

Not wishing to hijack the thread but hopefully something that will be accepted as related - I have been trawling the licensing paperwork of one of my schools recently and find that some licences have been purchased through the Select Agreement (which I understand it under the umbrella of the LEA) but others on an Open Agreement - the latter have a start and end date listed. How does that all work and would there be a central record for MS licences that I could query to establish how many we need to buy?

Just had a read through all this and it's left me confused I cover an EDB School with a lone vanilla domain running OS MS Server 2008 Standard Edition and something in the region of 100 client machines. Plus a Primary School with a vanilla domain running OS MS Server 2003 R2 and in the region of 70 client machines. Both sites include a dedicated Server 2003 set up and running as a workgroup covering SIMS. All CAL's are up to date and client licences are mainly the ones that came with the machines when they were purchased. Licences for MS Office Software etc are purchased as needed to cover the machines through a third party provider under a select agreement from the LEA; the LEA also provides AV for free. Will the changes talked about in this thread make any difference to the way we currently cover this? Also, I'm thinking that rather than spending many, many hours building a client back to function if it fails that imaging is likely to be the way to go moving forward. Presumably to do imaging we would need different licences from the OEM ones currently existing with the client machines?

Thanks Steve and Sukh, Had this same problem on this client previous and that's what I did then. As it's happened again that seems to indicate a bit of a deeper issue - or it might happen again. Strange that unplugging the network cable at the applying settings stage allows completion of the log on - yet doesn't result in incomplete access to the network?

Thanks for the reply. Yep just the one user. Logon elsewhere no problems at all. Other users can log on to the PC again without problems. A pure MS Server 2003 R2 Domain and XP Pro clients.
