With the redundancy of my Primary School ICT Tech job I no longer have that distinct pleasure of calling Pete and the rest of the superb Sherston Support team on the infrequent occasions when a component part of the Megadeal bundle played up. I'm visiting my grandchildren in France in a few weeks time. They moved about this time last year from the Isle of Wight. My daughter asked me if I could sort their Acer Notebook PC out (BSOD) for them whilst I'm visiting. Unfortunately it looks like the OS drivers MS Office disks are in storage in the UK. My first thought was to purchase some new student use software to load on so tried Software4Schools but unfortunately the disks they currently supply can only be used in the UK. Anyone know of other reliable suppliers who can fill the order please?

Used to have a Vanilla Windows Server 2003 R2 domain that was set up by a local company who covered several schools in the County. Network was then wholly XP and I noticed that occasionally clients were picking up a proxy setting that had clearly been set from another school. Now have a new domain served by a Windows Server 2008 - clients are a mix of XP Pro and Windows 7. This domain was set up by a really good server installer. However, I notice that despite the correct proxy setting being listed in Group Policy somehow the erroneous proxy setting still sometimes gets picked up by clients. Where could the setting be lurking:confused:

What's the recommendation for registration of a site when using Google of Microsoft Sites. the athletics Club i'm involved with has a MS site and recently had to change the site name because a third party had seized the name and wanted stupid money to let the club have it back.

The Domain I inherited was set up with a MS Server 2003 domain and XP Pro Clients. The external IT Company who ran it seemed to deploy most Client Software with the H+H virtual CD V6. We are now a MS Server 2008 Domain and gradually bringing in windows 7 Clients as replacements for XP Pro on older machines sent to computer heaven. V6 of the H+H doesn't seem to want to play with Windows 7 so we are looking at the benefits of replacing it with the new V10. I don't see a lot of mention of this seemingly excellent software on Edugeek - hence not being sure if I was posting to the correct thread. Anyone got experience they can share on this software please?

Have a Mac recently bound to Server 2008 AD with several other Macs (thanks to the sterling advice from this Forum) but when it comes to standard Domain User shutting down - Shut Down option isn't available only Log Off is. Shut Down option live if Admin is logged onto the Mac. Where do I need to look to sort that one please?

The referendum on voting Apologies in advance to anyone who was expecting my first blog to be on something technical:D Being of an age where voting is something I do partly in respect of the history of those who lost life and limb to protect our rights I'm currently in a quandary over this seemingly pointless referendum on the Voting system. I say pointless because we are given only two options The AV System or First Past the Post. More thought into the choices needed to be put into the Referendum choices for it to be meaningful. For a start all the choices of voting system should have been listed including that dreadful Party List PR System used currently to send our Politicians to the shambles called the European Parliament (you know the gravy train where they can't even decide upon which building to base the Parliament in). The main point that is ripping me apart on voting in the current treferendum though is the fact that unless voting becomes compulsory then as usual the right of many is going to be decided by the few who actually bother to vote at all. In the case of the current Referendum the Tories and UKIP will get their loyal vote out and First past the post will remain

Thanks M25man for both your answers. Wish I'd sought you advice prior to moving my school to a School agreement as I did not know there was a scheme for the discount on moving from OEM. On the other hand that particular school seemed to have a pretty mixed bag when it came to licences anyhow and it was proving to be a nightmare trying to track down what was OEM and what had been set up with new installs!

I hope this doesn't come across as a question and that viewers can see where I'm going to with my following rambling Thinking of the new (and old) Licensing systems for Schools provided through Microsoft (and indeed other providers - like AV via the LEA, Backup Software etc.) can anyone explain how the system works (or indeed if it does work) when support to schools is provided through external contractors. I'm thinking of schools who traditionally have all licenses either OEM or paid up front (say for Office 2007 / 2010 etc.) in house but going onto imaging and remote back up - support from an external contractor. Whose responsibility is it to ensure the licensing is in place / complied with?

On the other hand W H Smiths have a half price sale on a couple of headphones currently. Not sure what the make is but I picked up a pair of the in ear type (with 3 different sized buds) for under a tenner. They have an even cable length too. They do the job for me.

I found Blackcat Logo to be too much of a pain to continue with. Discouraged my teachers from using it in favour of the excellent Turtle in Textease Studio CT. However, if you don't have that option I seem to recall that there was a patch available. I believe that the superb Wiltshire based Sherston company now holds the rights to Blackcat and if their Technical Team can't fix any software problem then I'd be amazed.

We were getting it for Free via the LA. The LA is stopping that this FY but has negotiated a good deal on the price - best check with your LA to see if they have a similar deal?
